I disagree that 'fat cats' are a product of market forces. fat cats are a product of the fact that board members of top companies are part of a little club that devotes itself to scratching each others backs and awarding each other unjustified payoffs and bonuses. look at the number of chairmen who received big pay rises when the profits of their companies went down. If the shareholders had proper control over the running of the companies they would not vote for this sort of thing.
Personally, I say good luck to the fire fighters. You don't have to be a marxist to beleive that public servants deserve a reasonable wage. as for soldiers only getting 17k, well i wouldn't want to do their job but on the otehr hand they do get subsidised accomodation food and just about everything else. Last time i was in an officer's mess a pint of beer was about 20p.

i cant belive some of the things im reading here like the fireservice desurve good pay bloody nora come on i earn 17000 a year and go all over the place to earn it and spend loads of time away from home my point being i really earn my wage and that amount is fine for me and im happy with it my bills get paid fine i have just got a scooby and me and the wife go without nothing. How is 21000 a year not enough if you ask me its a bloody good wage and if i had the chance id be a fireman tomorow cause i dont have to spend time away from home i know whatimdoing from week to week. i feel that saying this is greed plane and simple and i hope the goverment cracks down and gives then no extra. if the goverment pay out maybe the nurses should go on strike as there wage is under the 20000 mark and us soilders should call it a day as were under the 20000 mark but no we wouldent do it cause we have a love for our profesion and were bloody proud of what we do

Bravo, granted it is a debate about the fire service. You refered to risk and mental trauma as justification for the pay award. I simply attempted to draw a comparison.
What is required, is to place their remuneration appropriately within the context of other public/private sector staff. A independent review is the normal mechanism employed. The previous dispute was settled in this manner and linked their pay to engineering workers.
They no longer find this comparison acceptable. Whilst there has been considerable change in that sector the FBU have for years stubbornly refused to alter traditional methods of working.
Strangely this is once again the main stumbling block.

I totally agree the Union is being more than shall we say "stubborn" and firmly believe its the Union thats feking the firefighters over.
I have said all along I support the demand for more money, but its conditional upon modern working practices being undertaken.
The Union needs to make concessions as much as the Government do on this problem. The firefighters also need to stand upto their own Union and tell them that its time to modernise and they will do that for the 16% pay rise.
And as for the Government not having any funds, they certainly had plenty of funds appear when they decided its time to back the US and step into war with Iraq. I don't disagree with that policy I am just pointing out they find money to spend when they want to!

GirlieTrailerTrash??? good god - wouldnt like to meet THAT Lesbo on a dark night would you???
Someone said that if 50,000 people could do my job for half my pay then I wouldnt like it and should STILL earn what I earn?? YOu ARE WAY OFF - they would get the job and I would be made redundant OR do it for half pay!!
Its about time the Firemen woke up to the year 2002 and stopped being greedy - they have been found out!! The Army lads are gaining in confidence day by day - they said on the News that they are bored witless!!
Fact is, MOST people COULD do a firemans job hence the pay is what it is - not many could do my job, despite TrailerTrash saying 'she' could!! ha ha ha![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

Pete!!!!
Did you read my post properly or has nursie taken away your specs? ![Stick Out Tongue](images/smilies/tongue.gif)
I was getting at the fact that if 50,000 people applied for your line of work it doesnt mean they could do the work.
Just because of the number of applicants for a job, it doesnt mean it devalues what that job is worth. If all applicants could do the job then fair enough but in my opinion that is never the case.
Hence just because so many are applying for the fire service doesn't necessarily mean they would be fit for the job. I for one wouldn't get accepted purely on the physical fitness side of things (I have spent too much time on my ar$e in an office) nothing to do with education or the type of character I am etc etc. There are many different requirements for all jobs, not everyone can do a firemans job just because they don't need to have a degree to do it.
Read people's replies before disagreeing with what u seem to think they have said.

I could do your job, anyone who has trained could!
(pslewis is allegedly a nuclear weapons engineer)
Unfortunately these are things that require an understanding, not just training. Not everything can be solved by training -- I would be useless as a painter/decorator, brain surgeon, teacher, etc.

Nuclear weapons engineer. Now there is a good investment... ...Bloody hell you couldn't make this **** up. A Nuclear weapons painter telling us the firefighters aren't worth 30 grand.....ha ha ha ha ha ha. Absolutely magnificent, if that was true it would surely be one of the greatest ironies of all time. Anyway I thought we'd outsourced our's to the yanks.....He even talks about taxpayers value for money FFS......no no no he cannot be involved in that. Its would just be too much.....aaaarrrggggggghhhhhh..Left arm numb, weight in chest....dizzy.....

Of course I can do nuclear physics!
I cpould have chosen that degree as I have maths, phs, biology chem A levels!!
I chose a different science degree. Worked in it for a bit, but not geared up to my needs as a people person LMAO, so left.
Nursing demands a lot more of my intelligence than my science job ever did!
Agree with Sheep

I see now the 'great Tony' has suggested that the firefighters should be trained to do paramedic work as well as fire duty.
Is anyone else scared by that suggestion?
Whilst I respect firemen for their job etc, I can't think of any of them that would be suitable for paramedic work.
Just shows how little respect Tony has for the paramedics if he thinks a fireman could do that work as well.
FFS, the government needs to start to understand what people do before they go off with their crazy, job share schemes!

Well Mr Lewis, it seems you talk like a right ****, I hope for you sake that you never have to be cut out of your car, like I was 6 years ago after a drunk driver hit me head on at over 100 mph, if it was not for these guys I would be dead, Their skill and dedication says it all, and if Mr Blair was to get his finger out of his **** and get it sorted this is a very sad country, as for the troops yes they are doing a good job, but they are not the professionals, and they need to be training for everying else, When I think of the money that has been wasted on the millinium dome, which in my opinion should have been spent on lowering hospital waiting lists, and as for Mr I need 2 Jags Prescott, well that prat whats to step into the real world and try and live on £20,000 a year, the guy is nothing but a thug, and should not be in a position in goverment what so ever.

Everyone knows that the squaddies are doing there best, but I'm sure if we had another Clapham/Paddington/Southall type rail accident then the striking firefighters would be straight there strike or no strike!
