Believe me it is a dump!!

We spent March through to Sept building a nice big garage, this was done on weekends and after work, whenever time permitted. This had to be done so we could put some stuff in there, so we could then do the house!

Do you have central heating at the moment? if so you are lucky

Once we have done this half the house, the back half is getting knocked down and rebuilt, so we have to wait till then before we even think about central heating

Oh and yes, doing it all ourselves!

Survived for quite a while without central heating or hot water (had an electric shower) when we bought the last place. I sympathise - I'm not doing that again!!

It had wall to wall floors as well (a luxury!), but not floor to ceiling plaster

We sold it for a good profit when it was done and we stopped being students.

 

I am still slightly in awe (or quite possibily stupified by) someone with 2 kids who has a staircase in place of a ladder

 

No hotwater for us, unless we light the coal fire, and then we have to let it run for 10 minutes, because the back boiler is buggered and discolours the water.

We have to go to our parents for showers

Thankfully i put the dishwasher in though, dont car how it looks for the moment, as taht part of the house will be demolished

 

I vote for a forum

Could cover all sorts of domestic stuff like home automation, not just building work........

 

Except that if you have dedicated forums fewer people browse and help. Why would a plumber/electrician etc look at a DIY forum - they can doit themselves already or know people who can. No doubt we would have 1 or 2 helpful souls but thats quite unlike the thousands who lurk/browse non-scooby.

Quite the opposite really IMO. I think they would be drawn to it, even if its just for a laugh, or point out stupid behaviour!

Its similar to saying why do Bob Rawle, John Banks, R19KET post in drivetrain and general, when they obviously know how to do it themselves

Nick, you missed the bit about the kids staying at our Parents for the last 6 weeks, hence Emmas mood swings (she misses them being at home) even though she is with them all day from 7 till 7.

The stupid bit applies when you think there are stairs there when drunk! not such a good idea!!!

And remember the offer of help is there if you need it.. I can probably manage to get 4 / 5 people around on a weekend.. who are all capable (sp) of working.. (for free as they owe me..)

What is it about DIY - I can never decide if it's the sense of acheivement I like (well crave at least) or if I'm just a tight git.......

 

Been doing up my house for last two years since I bought it, now worth 40K more than I bought it for!!

DIY - love it

 

House DIY is pain!

Gutted (removed all plaster) and rewired Kitchen. Plastered and fitted by professionals (well the plaster did a good job anyway).

Insulated everywhere, roof, crawl spaces, garage.

New garage ceiling, rewired garage, usual shelves and stuff.

All I have left to do is:
Reglaze house
Fit triple glazing (I moved near an airport, now targeted to be largest in world, oops!)
New (huge) Garage
Convert a bedroom upstairs to a new bathroom (currently downstairs)
Convert old (integral) garage and old bathroom into usable space
Decorate everywhere except kitchen.

By which time I will be ready to move I should think, and build my own house, or rather garage with living space!

I just love the tast of chiselled brick dust!

I was going to fit kitchen, but wimped out, as I hadn't done much like that before.

However, between signing for the kitchen to having it fitted, is when I decided to rip off 4 walls worth of floor to ceiling tiles. Which were bonded with rubberised adhesive, which meant that it took 1" of plaster off in places.

That revealed chared cables still live
Break in ring main
Holes in floor under units
18" chisel sticking up out of the floor, with the unit cut around it.
Leaking roof

So after taking off a load of tiles, it was decided to take off all the plaster, re wire, with all new socket placement so the installers didn't have to do anything at all.

Then had velux windows fitted.

New door frames

New 30 amp feed for new cooker location

New LPG gas installation

All of which took about 5 weeks.

Kitchen was fitted in 4 days, and had I known what I know now, I would have done that myself too, as I (with help from family and the plasterer) had done all the hard work for them.

Still you live an learn.
