Free Mod - Improve MPG - Same Power!!

Yeah, my reply about gas laws was a little bit sad more meant to raise the question of how much does someone in the nuclear industry need to know about physics!!
BTW pete I have every faith in you , besides which the general gas law could have been formulated after your schooling (!!) - it could be worse, pete II could be running the place, then we really would be in trouble

Other cars generally get around the scoop thing by mounting the intercooler at the front of the car, next to the radiator - or by using a chargecooler, which uses a coolant (such as water) which has a radiator at the front of the car, the coolant is piped back to nearer the turbo to cool the intake gas.
You can get away without an intercooler but you have to run a very low compression ratio to prevent detonation, which results in a very inefficient engine.

While I'm here, have a link!!!

There are plenty of kits around to do this, but usually cost in the region of £1k or so.
Are you sure you want to do this though? Sounds dangerously like a mod to me - you'll be wanting gold wheels next!!!

>But other Turbo cars DONT have that big ugly scoop???
Do us all a favour: buy an Audi S3 and join the pigheaded Germanic arrogance brigade. It will suit you down to the ground

IMHO,
I think removing the intercooler to the nose
will make the turbo response get worse...
(longer piping from the intercooler to turbine)
How about cooling the intercooler by spraying water?
This is standard in STi type R, RA or Spec C.
My 2 cents.

If that's true, why do rally cars and many modified turbo road cars (and Evos etc) run with FMICs? Certainly there is more piping involved, but the huge increase in the area of the intercooler than air can hit must produce a better cooling effect?

you're very right Chris
I just want to give an insight
about the bad side effect of removing the IC
to the front nose.
Yes, the turbo response will be worse,
but we can get more power.
However, in the new Sti Spec C, which has twin scroll
ball bearing turbine (less friction),
that may not be a big problem.

A turbo engine isnt a sport engine with a turbo strapped to it. The general design is the same (flat four) but the internals are very diffrent.
The FMIC option is a good one but by the time you have had it fitted and setup and brought a spot bonnet you aint going to get much chanage out of £2K thats a lot of fuel.
Its the way to go if you want serious power but not for merely getting rid of the scoop .

Besides the scoop does cool the turbo as well, if you look at the tray thing on the underside of the scoop you'll see the main part feeds the intercooler but there's also some vents directing air over the turbo at the left side of the scoop.
Dunno how effective or essential this is though, and I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to feed a hose from the front to the turbo to drive air over it. Just need that FMIC now, personally I'm keeping the scoop

To the real pslewis...
some of us on here are relatively new to scoobs and their
wonderful working ways. We try and glean as much info as possible
from the more knowlegable people on here.
When you indulge yourself, winding ppl up; we , inexperienced
scooby owners know no different, and sometimes do not like being led up the garden path, & being fed cr@p.
Hence, i expect this is why some ppl slag you off.

>pete the original, Your an excellent fisherman, you offer the bait and they fight over themselves to get on your hook,
then you just reel them in Brilliant stuff Bob I

Do YOU think I DO THIS FOR FUN ? You seem to think that I am wound up. WHAT UTTER NONSENSE. How long have YOU owned an Impreza ? I bet YOU were brought up on Escorts, Mondeo's and Transit Vans, you weren't a diesel fitter by any chance were you ? Subaru is a breed that has to be appreciated. SOME APPRECIATE the breed better than others. ANYONE who thinks the original pslewis is funny should visit their shrink, because he NEEDS attention ALSO. TREAT THIS BBS MORE SERIOUSLY IT IS NOT A joke area.
