My first service was £90 mate! Think i paid SS £260 for the last one inc lots of brake fluid...
I paid £2600 for the TVR once and there wasn't much wrong with it -they put in new bushes and steering spiders and a pair of kick plates
You don't know you're born - never had it so good etc

Road-rash, I can easily afford it, thats not my point, the point is i'm spending stupid amounts of money on getting to work and back and I'm not sure that the trade off (excellent speed and handling) is worth it.
I think it's because I haven't driven it for a while and have forgotten how good it makes me feel

not being funny but how on earth is an MR2 a high performance car, even one with a mighty 180 BHP? They are "ok" cars and thats it, my girlfriend has one, they deffo not blisteringly quick.

If all you want is a car to commute in then sure, you are nuts to run a Scoob. An impreza is not a particularly good car to commute in on a day to day basis. I actually use the bus 2 or 3 times a week to work because 1) It's an easy journey for me. 2) I'm doing my small bit for the environment 3) Mileage based insurance 4) It feels good when I do use it!
I believe you have to be an enthusiast to run a Scoob. If you bleat on about how much it costs you, sell it to someone who will appreciate it for what it is and get yourself a "sensible" car.

I wouldnt run a scoob doing your mileage. Probably would buy a diesel barge and use it to pile on the miles and keep the scoob for weekends/holidays.
I commute only 12 miles daily, so no probs for me :-). The insurance, tyres and servicing costs also drop if you do less miles.
It's a hard choice to make, can you justify having an expensive car gathering dust 5 days a week, not sure I could..
The depreciation is also scarey.

Mr Weaver...
what good taste mate.
I used to have a 1.6Gti. What a cracking car, with a lovely gear box. One of the best drives I have had.
E30 M3, 968 Club Sport, Modified Eunos and my beloved WRX are the other cars that stick in my mind.
If any one wants a great drivers car that is cheap you can't beat a 205 1.6GTI. Better than the 1.9 as an all round package.
I am sure some of these newer french hot hatches may be as sweet though. But haven't had the chance to drive any.

ADP,
£750 a month was the figure I arrived at for running an Impreza from new.
I wouldn't have believed it was that much until I put all the figures into Excel.
My mortgage is less than that so it seemed stupid to spend such a large percentage of my monthly income on a car that I only really drove to work (5 miles each way). Basically I went to work to pay for a car to drive me to work...

The MR2 would surprise a few of you Scoob owners anyway. On the run down to the Big One in Nottingham, we went over the Snake Pass.
The guy behind me was in a MY02, and he openly admitted at the services where we all met up that he was having difficulty keeping up with me through the twisties, and on the uphill bits.
Read into what you will, and if 180bhp is notenough for some, it is for me. Great car, once you know how to drive it.
And is it a performance car? Well I believe so - fun, RWD, powerful enough, 160 ish top speed, cheap to run and can match most hot hatches, and other cars so yes, a performance car it is. Always a shame that Subaru owners cant remove the rose tinted specs and clear their blinkered view
PS Try a turbo version

If you can afford to by a scoob you should be able to afford to run it. If not get a skoda. I mean 1.6 GTI 1980s yes but 2002 no. Would rather have a ford KA.
It may have been designed in the 80's, but still looks fresh even now, and the driving experience is one of pure joy. Nothing on the road today can match the fun of driving a 205 - fantastic cars.
I suppose Audi Quattros and Lancia Deltas are crap as well?

My next door neighbour has a 1.9GTi and I met him out on the open roads once (er, I mean private test track). I suspect he was a tad more committed than me, but we went for it and I didn't leave him as far behind as I would have liked. He paid £300 for it compared to £6500 for my beastie, plus his insurance was 3rd party only and about £200 notes and he ran it on part-worn tyres.

i might be missing something here, but you said "high Performance", if you want to be literal, it certainly is not high performance. In any case ive had a "race" with a turbo mr2 in my old wrx, and they are not even quick. And a sprint time of around 8 seconds to 60 is not my idea of a performance car, let alone high performance.
Rose tinted or not ill stick with an officialy listed super car P1, and leave the Mr2 to the girlfriend.

I dont know what is more fun on the twisties, being in a scoob being able to stick to the road at speed, or being in an mr2 wondering if the back end is gonna go (added excitement/fright). I know the '2 isn't a high performance car, but its certainly not average. (from an MR2 owner and scooby passenger)

get rid of WRX, and get MR2 tubby!! 245 bhp as stock, and easlity tweaked to 280 +. I have whooped plenty a wrx in mine, and it only has filter and exhaust! Plus... wrx's are sooo common.... Like escorts, or xr2's... just nooo class!

8 second 0-60?? you kidding? In an N/A maybe, but a stock tubby will get there in 5.2-5.7... Untweaked!!! Up the boost to a known safe level of 16psi, and get 280 for nowt!! C'mon... those glasses are getting more and more tinted whenever you speak!!

Let me give you my point of view
Im 21, have a crap job and own a 1993 MR2
for an NA it is quick, it gets to 60 before a stock S14 turbo and slightly slower than an S13 turbo, it would probly beat a non turbo 2.0 impreza and yes its very cheap to run. I think of it as a performance car, it is in a high insurance group, with other performance cars. Sure its no match for a 280bhp impreza but a MR2 turbo certainly will match it. 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.
If you cannot afford to run an impreza then i would definatly reccomend an MR2, the support is great on IMOC.co.uk just as it is on here. I cant really see much else for 5k that is any better value than an MR2.

race in the wet impreza wins, race in the dry mr2 wins. race on country roads impreza wins, on a motorway mr2 wins. on style mr2 wins, on praticality impreza wins, 300bhp+ is cheaper, easier and more reliable in an mr2 as its engine is stronger than an imprezas. you can argue anything and claim your car is better but there are always aspects which your car doesn't win in. i've got an mr2 turbo ('91) and always have a huge grin in the wet or dry, sideways in the wet is more entertaining to me than 4wd grip.

So what you're all saying is it's horses for courses lets face it we all buy what we want in the price range (or maybe slightly higher) that we can afford.
I'm sure if we all had a few million in the bank we'd have various cars which would all have varying abilities and characteristics. I'm sure you'd have fun taking a different car out every day and appreciate what THAT car has to offer.............maybe if we did that a bit more on scoobynet there would be less of the crap V's threads and be more constructive ones where people who drive different marques would be able to inform us of the enjoyable parts of owning something other than a scoob. Surely then we would all benefit......

i dont know what imprezas you have been racing then. Try a P1 or an sti old shape and youll be left for dust wet OR dry. 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds might seem fast in an mr2, but compared to 4.3 -4.6 for stiRa and P1 then youre in a different class im afraid.
And you can even have rear wheel stlye handling in an impreza if you wish, just go and buy an sti5typeR, ive had one and they are very back endy. Mr2 are a nice enough car, but im afraid its a class apart when compared to a top powered impreza. And i dont seriously believe that mr2s can quite happily beat an sti or a P1 on a dry twisty road or a motorway for that matter.

Liverpool & Victoria do not require trackers on Scoobies and are very competitive for some at least so that might save you a couple of grand. You'll never know how much you'll miss it until it's gone - bit like the missus i suppose!
