I did MG Metro (great for oversteer and slides), XR2 MK2 (got nicked after 5 days ownership - TP only ), then 205 1.6, with filter, plugs, Custom exhaust etc - loved it to bits, and it was very quick.
Sold it to a guy down the road, and he wrote it off after 2 weeks Spent loads of time and money on it - including 8 hours on the rear light conversion, creating the new loom myself, as well as clear lights all round
Check that exhaust

scots man -
pug on track with good suspension and brakes. get the lower front strut brace too, this more effective than upper. coilovers probably adviseable suspension wise - mi16 engine with twin forties and you will pi55 off alot of more powerful and more expensive cars! i would stick to 15" wheels though i just don't see a benefit of 16/17" wheels on pugs - totally un-nessacary.
i actually believe that 14" 1.6 wheels are best on the roads, as you get the same footprint, but the tyre wall gives on the 14"s and gives more feedback as to the cars limits. 15" are more inclined to catch you out IMO

Q to the (ex or current) 205 GTi crew...
How did you make yours handle. Mind has been previously lowered at the back and its cr@p to say the least. Very oversteery, to much so. The rear suspension just doesn't work infact it makes the car unpredictable which is;t what you want in a hillclimb / sprint car !!!!
What do you think, rebuild the rear beam and fit new shocks. Raise the ride hight a bit ??

dream weaver,
can't believe the ba5tard wrote it off- it looked sweet!
took me two years before mine went upside down one night ! (you learn from these things...)
replaced it within 12 hours though and still have the replacement.

as i say, billies or konis all round works very well for a road setup and coil overs for race/track are probably gonna be better.
as regards the rear torsion beam. i rebuilt mine, although it was not cheap it did sort the back out a treat. sounded like a load of canaries in the boot before, as it squeaked so much!
i had it dropped two notches on the splines at the back with 40mm springs over the bilsteins at the front. this made the car sit level. before i had three notches on the splines and this made the back squat doqwn further than the front. that was cool, but the two notch option is better IMO.
lower strut brace is fantastic too, upper one gives some benefits, but this is mainly when you open the bonnet to impress people!
uprated discs (i ran black diamond) and pads (pagid) were great. if i was to do it again i would do the braided hosing also.
sort a standard engined pug out with the above mods and it will feel like a differef=nt car and will be alot faster.

edited cos i think i may have only dropped 25 mm at the front now?? short term memory - gotta cut down on the herbal!

i think that the 1.9 wheels are in my all time top three best standard application alloys in terms of looks - have you noticed that pug actually fit imitation hub caps on alot of there newer models?

Yup I reckon the 1.9 Speedlines are tops too, I hate it when I see people with different boulers on them, sacrilidge!
I reckon they have got to be one of the sweetest handling cars out there, mind you I drive my girlfriends brothers from time to time, which has Spax and has been lowered, my **** nips over every pothole!

I think Mutant Matt has a point, I last owned a 205 1.9 GTi about 7 years ago and remember it as having amazing handling, loads of torque, great steering, a knife through butter gear change, strong brakes and despite having quite a few miles on the clock the engine was smooth and it didn't rattle that much.
Drove one recently and my fond memories were shattered and it was pretty horrible - the steering was still impressive but the engine was gutless and the gear change had turned into a horribly vague spoon through porridge.
The handling was skittish with the slightest sniff of damp it felt like it would pirouette at any moment. Won't go into squeaks and rattles, but I should have expected everything really.
I think unless you find one thats been locked in a museum for the last decade a Clio 16V or Williams would be a far better bet. Of the 80s hatches only Golfs would be screwed together well enough to last to 2002 and its hard to even find a decent one of them.
Having said all that I bet a well tuned 5 GT Turbo is still damn rapid today, I was always jealous of my mates - it was a cracker.

Ex-pug,
Yeah I know SBC makes sense.. I've spoken to Dell, infact off back there this weekend. Lets just say that the SBC solution is somewhat expensive, yeah I'm sure its great but I've spent *ahem* a f*ck of a lot with the DTA ECU, engine rebuild & everything else.
Maybe SBC Phase II later, but for now or at least until early in the 2003 season it will be on rebuilt suspension unfortunately.
Your having a laugh ain't ya ??? Its horrendous, even worse than my old 1984 Quattro turbo which had a huge through through a very heavy clunky gearbox.

I too had 2 pug 1.9's in succession (followed by 2 integrale evos) and I can honestly say in all seriousness that I reckon it is simply the best all round car ever made. You could make the car literally dance on the road the handling was so good and it was so light. And yet the 7 hours on the motorway to Scotland to find the really good roads was do-able in comfort, the seats were superb.

"Are lot sure you haven't just accidentally got your rose tinted specs on???
Matt
P.S. I used to love my 205 1.9GTi but I'm under no illusions now that if I went back to it, it would feel damn slow, have no grip and crap brakes!!!! "
LOL - And I bought a Scooby because I wanted a slow second car. No rose-tinted specs, just fact

i would only recommend the lowering of any pug in conjunction with uprated shox all round-
i can relate to this quote by turbo boost "The handling was skittish with the slightest sniff of damp it felt like it would pirouette at any moment "
with knakered shox the things are f---ing lethal!
quote by mk iv:
"it would feel damn slow, have no grip and crap brakes!!!! "
i think you would be suprised provided it was a good one.
and
"Are lot sure you haven't just accidentally got your rose tinted specs on???"
as i explained earlier i wear rose tints often (for real! i am wearing them now) and the world is indeed a better place as a result! you guys should try it sometime!

the pickup is fab i agree - just snaps away like a disgruntled terrier!
as i say - viva le pug!

My Nova wasn't as cool as my Pug or my Valver, but it was still cool for a 18 year old.

what i mean is they look right for the car. they don't look like they are worth twice as much as the car either!
i like that one - looks nearly standard which is something i prefer - i mean the nova always looked pretty cool standard anyway - shame the "boyracers" raped it!

Sad but true. My standard sti7 isn't faster thru corners than my old hatchback. And here in Switzerland we have corners enough.
But after the bend, the sti is just brilliant.

i would like to know what your previous motor was!
true though that the power as you exit the bend in most hatches will not match a scoob though.
welcome to the board

It was a 306, 190bhp with uprated springs. See the link in my previous post.
Especially in hairpins the sti's understeer makes it slower than the 306 which could be forced to even oversteer if necessairy.
