For the full on hot hatch effect, you need both:
Ollys Pug

Ollys Golf

Said it many times, but the Pug is one of my favourite cars ever. And I have owned and driven a lot of cars. Mine is a particurlaly fine and unmolested example, as Peugeot intended. So precise, so nimble. Some say flimsy, I say lightweight (as did Colin Chapman). Lovely and torquey, alive steering, perfect gearchange, wonderful driving position, still handsome after all these years, comfortable as well. I replaced the ugly Bugeye with one mainly because it suits my daily drive to work so well (several miles of tight lane and twisty B road). Jump out of the Pug into the Impreza and you think that someone has disconnected the steering wheel, feels like you are on an arcade machine. However, the Scoob is of course far more capable, quieter, faster and safer. But ultimately no challenge. And no fun.
The Golf is still a honey of a car. Still feels brand new, so fluid and taut to drive, with immortal build quality (not a rattle after 15 years and 57000 miles) and bags of torque making it feel faster than it is, although its not as fun as the Pug and the non PAS steering feels very undergeared these days.
Never driven a Clio Williams, but is on the "maybe one day" wish list, along with a lot of cars. That should complete the set.

Know exactly what you mean about that non-PAS Golf. Drove one on a track-day out thing round a dirt track in Stratford upon Avon. Ok, very limited experience of the Golf, but blimmin heck did you have to haul the wheel round to pull it round the corners at any speed (without serious handbrake usage). I was letting it fly back to near-centre, grabbing it and (smoothly but quickly) taking it towards the other lock to get it round the next corner.
Pretty bumpy too. Then drove a Scoob round the same track, completely different story. So easy, so effortless, and boy you could feel the power difference (this wasn't a particularly sporty Golf).

i've had 3 novas, two were 1.4 sr's and the other a gte......totally great crack all year round, far more fun (and very easy to fix and tune!!)....especially as i rolled two of them....but i really miss them. Thinking about getting one for a local road rally in May for some sideways action ;-)
