Hi Steven: Am I right in assuming a couple of posts disappeared into cyber space??? Just noticed.
O.K. So the breathers give out hot air loaded with oil vapour and droplets even. To get optimum performance your car needs a supply of cold fresh air. If it is warm and you are running to the limit under adverse load conditions and the breathers send out a load of contaminated hot gases then you could go beyond the det threshhold.
With no breather air reciculating into the inlet tract then the operating perameters are kept more constant and safer.

Do the inlet tract and catch tank at the same time as it makes more sense and you will have time to get the right tank at the right price so the brass can be spent on something else.

No you cant have a pen, cheers Harvey.
Going to do both at same time, as i think its better to take the inlet manifold off completely to do it.
Suppose i could have a go at both myself, with my dads weld, but then that would be limited to steel for me, i would ideally like aluminium.

Removing the I/M is not necessary but if you do then insulation spacers can be fitted at the same time. To fit bigger than 63 dia ie 75 dia you need to cut off the two lugs at the rear uderside of the I/M on the drivers side. IMHO the hassle is not worth the effort unless you plan to go a long way past 450 bhp. The lugs hold the fuel rails in place and it is important they are securely clamped.

Dont want to break the original inlet pipe by taking it off without the IM off.
Or can it be done?

Sorry, I was obviously mistaken... you see I only had this:

it can but not easy... I have a spare iirc... I would remove rails and go parallel feed at the same time, but that requires new fuel pressure reg.. and doesnt look std

what happent is whilst the car was parked, the rubber deteriorated (sp) and some rats and mice nibbled at the rubber..
This was not helped by the oil on the rubber either..

dont mean to bring it up everywhere, but many people seemt o be suggesting the idea of a generic carbon fibre inlet pipe.
Personally I think a samco type pipe would probably be easier, and carbon is probably wasted since it isnt exactly on show and is a nightmare to fit.
Nevertheless, lots of people want it.
Trouble is there are several different requirements based on number of breather pipes, etc, along with what size to make the exit for mating with the turbo.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to design a generic pipe which can be the basis for an inlet pipe, with other peoples requirements being met by replacable add ons, or is it simply too much effort?

the carbon one is not really a priority to me. I dont think it solves any problems, and doesnt reduce weight really. it isnt on show, and doesnt need to be mega tough.

To give you motivation....
I made up these two pipes.
First one (silver) is 63mm down to 57mm for the turbo inlet, 2nd (yellow) 63mm all the way through. Short Samco hose joins pipe to turbo.
Making bigger than 63mm brings up another issue in that the power steering header tank will need to be relocated, whereas the 63mm can keep the original header in place.
The 2nd one ( yellow) was knocked up in an hour, taken home to get finally positioning, then taken into the work the following night to get welded.
All in took 2-3 hours max and a huge saving on dedicated items.
Cost? £20 for the 90 degree Samco hose.

Don't joke about the rats!
My father in-law is currently travelling about with two set mouse traps!!!
He had a box of roses on the front seat and he went to open them and found the box empty and hole in the box.. then noticed a hole in the back seat!!! :eekk: and all the roses, some eatten in the boot..
That was late so next day he does out and finds that the roses have gone!!! strip searches the car and they are all behind the passenger headlight!! and he had travelled 20miles to work too...
He removed the roses, but there is evidence the mouse is still in there..
The mouse traps keep going off when you hit bumps which put the creaps up passengers..
Hope the clean of the BOV solves the problem..
thinking about catch tank myself..
I fancy an empty coke can!
