Does anyone know where I could get a map of the Nurburgring circuit? Would love to run a map on screen showing exactly where John is on the course. The bigger and more detailed the map the better!

Cheers.

Question

nice idea with the map, defo worth doing,

would also be interesting if u could indicate altidude (some sort of scrolling line graph) as the ring is as much about that as corners, in car footage can mask steep climbs and decents

just an idea... thanks for listening

cheers

DAVYBOY - THANKS FOR THE MAP - THAT IS FAB!

It is however a bit soft and I can't read the corner names which I also want to include. I can definitely trace out the track in white and superimpose that though.

The altitude idea is good - dont know where I would get the data, but I can always ask John if its uphill or downhill at that point!

What is a streckenprofil? Does this give incline data in % ?

Actually can't read any of the names mate (too many nights alone in my bedroom).

Appreciate your help

this is getting very cool.

The ring is a truly amazing place, the rear camera footage really shows the elevation change diesel, the front masks it.

The video is being made up using cameras mounted inside the car both forward and rearwards facing, plus one camera at eye level mounted on my helmet (here we go again) plus mounted on the roof and front splitter. It's going to give some really interesting angles and perspectives.

Really looking forward to seeing it myself now.

scale on the left is meters height change, scale on the bottom is distance in KM. The % incline is written next to the graph line.

highest point is 620m above sea level
lowest point is 320m above sea level
bigest incline is 16%
bigest drop is 11%
height diference is 300m at its lowest to highest point

Nice one John & Diesel. I'll be ordering a copy when it becomes avilable.

I always wanted to go to the 'Ring, but now I've seen lots of action from it and listened to some of the horror stories, I'm not so sure!

When Karen and I get ourselves a decent track-car organised (SOON, PLEASE!) we'll be joining the rest of you for jaunts over there for some serious action.

Driving the Nurburgring is all about your mental attitude. It is not like driving on a trackday; the only real thing similar to a trackday is that the traffic is all in one direction, so you don’t have any issues with oncoming cars or bikes.

If you approach it with the idea that it is a fast run in the country on a road you don’t know, driving it on sight, then you wont have any problems. If you approach it as somewhere to find the limits of the car and a track you can learn on your first visit, then I guarantee you will crash. I would say, every one in three laps there is a crashed car or bike, it doesn’t matter what the weather is like either. (Although Porsches eat the Armco at wiperman at a scarily regular rate in the wet)

The biggest danger for a newcomer is when you get to the point where you think you know where the track goes. Most people feel this around the 20-lap mark, I felt this after 12 laps, and like most, I was wrong.

The ring is a great place to drive, you can drive it at any pace you like, even driving slowly there is something for you to see or learn. It’s the only place I know where you can be doing 120MPH sat behind a superbiker with his knee sliders sparking away at you. It’s the only place I know where track knowledge and a decent level of ability can have you minutes a lap faster than a car worth 20 times your own in value. It’s fun when you pull up in the carpark and a Porsche Turbo driver comes up and says how fast your car is, having been blown away, only to be gobsmaked when you say it’s standard power.

I am not sure how many laps I have now done, probably around 140. Every lap I learn something new, but I know the lap well enough now to be able to sit down with my eyes shut and drive it in my head, knowing exactly where the next corner goes, where most crashes occur so where to be more cautious, where the tarmac is slippy, where it is grippy. I can lap within a second or two all day; I get a lot of satisfaction from that.

The ring is nothing to be afraid of as long as you respect it. I think everyone should drive it at least once; there is nowhere else like it.

Agree with most of what you say JF, but ...

<scoobynet scaremongering mode on> ... I found it a bit daunting when I first went out. I had never done trackdays before, so this was the first "fast spin", and I was pretty intimidated with the locals passing me left & right as if I was standing still.

I was learning a) driving "fast" b) the track and c) my rear view mirror intimately

Up to the point where I was more concentrated on faster traffic, almost stuffing it in the process

But after a few laps, it is really a glorious feel going round there, no matter what speed or times you are doing. Very ragged in the first few laps (if feels "fast", but it's dead slow), getting a bit smoother after 30 or so laps.

At the same time, it still scares the **** out of me. Very mixed feeling.

Hope I can get my insurance thingy sorted out so I can get back on track (pun intented) there one day.

Look forward to the tape

DW & Squizz.

Don't put it off!

When I went for the first time I said to my self,
"I'll just do a few laps to say I have been", so off I went and bought a 1 lap ticket, did a lap then went and bought a 5 lap ticket. After a wet weekend and 20 laps it was time to go home, and I was already planning my next trip!

As John says you just have to treat it as a normal road. You do start getting faster, I think it took me about 20 laps (over 260 miles) to nearly have a full lap sorted (by that I mean I know which way the track is going to go). I have now done 40 laps and am planning several trips next year.

I cant speak highly enough of it, it makes UK track days appear boring, its not as hard on your car, it's not just the driving though, it usually a great weekend of beer and food too!

Nice parody Matt

But as I recal it should possibly should include "wet"

As in its dark, wet and...,not we're wet and

There again

if feels "fast", but it's dead slow
True Theo, that's what I thought when I looked in the mirror and saw a Black VW Minibus gaining ground.

Then it passed me

I think Jamie will vouch for the great beer.
Wish i could give you a ring J Talk to you later.

Oh, and it's a given your getting a video, doing these in NTSC format too.

I see what you are saying Theo, and i guess you could be right on the track novice perspective, some of the closing speeds can be extreme. But i still think it's more than doable for mr/mrs average if he/she goes with the right expectations and mentality. It's the guys who go there thinking they are going to blow you away that concern me.

Just to add, Clare had never done a track day before going to the ring, and she manages just fine. In fact she found the SIDC day at Donington more frighting.

That girl did enjoy shaking her bum at me out of breidscheid, pity the bike was doing it too. Thats a favourite spot for bikers doing highsides, i ran over the tail lights of an R1 out of there in the westie once, he wasnt too amused. (No i didnt wheelie it, he had already binned it and was collecting his bits and bobs up )

She typified whats wrong with one or two of the bikers, they find it hard to believe a car is faster than them on their Dukatis or R1's or whatever.

Most are excelent though, you just have to be aware that some are a bit stuborn. You wont have this problem as a newbie though, you have to be tanking on a bit to pass some of the superbikes.

Ooh, <rubs hands together> this is a definate for me then at some stage - probably late next summer.

Thanks for the tips John, Davyboy et al - from watching the various ring vids I have here, I have always said that if I go, i will treat it as driving on a fast country road (for which there are lots where I live), rather than a racetrack. The layout of the Ring has similarities to some of our great A and B roads up north here

So now, how much would a Ring weekend cost? Ferry/Drive, food, beer, beer, driving around the ring, fuel, beer, food, sleeping etc etc? Any rough ideas?

Ferry and B&B £250
12 Lap ticket £80 (*2)
Petrol 6-8 tanks? £300
Beer and food £150
£

Jesus! But if you plan it and pay for your accomodation and ferry prioir to going it does not seem half as bad as writing it all down

In the blue corner is, the Ring with it's 172 corners.... blah blah

What a great thread, a celebration of video naming, the greatest track in the world and how to really enjoy what we work so hard for, our cars!!!
Dream, you must come over next year mate. I went for the first time this year and had the BEST time. Great people, (TaviaRS, John F etc - locals giving me rides in their GT3 Club sports ), great food (you would not believe the size of the pork joints!!!), great beer and above all great driving.
Roll on next year, talking of which do (the people who were there) still fancy the badger challenge!?!?!?
