Modded Scoob beats Porsche 911 again and again
#31
Only driven the porkers in the dry.
Still prefer a Boxter S or 968 even in the wet though, it actually handles well, which is to my mind a different thing than bags of grip.
In terms of speed though in the wet, id imagine me in an Impreza would thrash me in Boxter S / 968 on track or *especially* on road. Scoobs are fantastic for making good progress in varying road conditions IMO. Pays your money ...

Thats what my mate was on about in the dry his 20 year old 944 handles beautifully, has no rust and still looks as good as the day it was built. He was amazed how well the scoob went in the wet and started giggling and a few chocie experessions when it came on turbo .
I agree pays ya money and I am still seriously thinking about a 993/996 as a replacement in a year or so.
As for my mate, after going in the scoob he wants power a 5.4 928 GTS now .

lets get this into perspective,my 95 Wagon cost me 8 Grand,i've spent about another grand on it Exhaust etc. Oh and Dave Wallis did something to it.The performance is literally staggering. The only Porker that would beat it im my opinion is a Carrera 4 Turbo(i know cos i've driven one in anger)but they are a fortune.
For the money(and a lot more money) you can't better a well sorted Scoob.
Paul.

boring boring boring, sorry you cannot truly comment unless u have owned both. What pisses me off the most is that people just say 911. Lets see the actual models please , its hardly ok to compare 20 YO cars against current day turbo cars.

I havent owned a Ferrari or a Lada but I have an opinion on both and I would rather have the Ferrari .
The fact is 911 turbos were and still are very expensive and still command a high price 2nd hand and if people were in the market with 15-20K you would be looking at a a mid 80s model.
What you cant compare is a 90,000 sports car with a 20,000 5 seater saloon car except in the wet twisties .

Chrisp,
I have owned an Sti and a 996 C4(non turbo), there is little in the performance below 70 and handing is not 1000miles apart. However above 70 and in the looks and feel dept there is no contest. People are impressed by the turbo kick in the pants from Sti but the 996 accelerates through the entire rev range. New price is probably 2.5x higher for the porsche is it 2.5 times as fast. Nope but its certainly faster at top end, and as similarly fast below 70(my 600 ccc bike eats both for breakfast) and porker handles easily as well as sti , however my willingness to test it to the limits are limited by my abilities and my knowledge of what it cost. It sounds a little bit better too
Sti was an amazing car for the cash I paid(coming from Golf Gti), I loved it(apart from repair bills), i would have another too. I would however given the choice EASILY take the 996. sti cost me 10 grand in depreciation and repairs in 18 months, porker 20K in 2.5 years. Scooby is a good car its just not as good as some people's limited experience think it is ....
Cheers

I need to get it in me garage so width is a premium and isnt the S a bit more expensive and heavier and slightly slower than the C4. Must say if an S turned up at the right price I wouldnt say no .

Chrisp,
Don't consider the C4 or S if you ever envisage anything other than midgets in the back and an aircraft cabin sized bag(if u are lucky) in the boot. Diff and tunnel take up loads of space.
Cheers
Cammy
BTW even with 4wd the back end will come away if you get over ambitious.

Its okay I got the scoob as a practical car but now scared to leave it anywhere as it attracts attention (good and bad ) so its become just a fun car, I have a runabout for everything else.
Oh and the backend moves on the RA as well sometimes .

Probably my fault Steve .
Still confused by cammy's last post though. I am interested in porsches and I am serious considering a second hand 993/996 in the future and I am not on a wind up (for a change ) I do have a mate with a very nice '83 944 (I got it for him off another mate of mine would have had it myself but I mentioned it to him and he would have killed me if I had brought it). My mate even turned up at the staffs meet 2 in his 944 as plenty of people can confirm.
Cheers

Don't worry about it Chrisp.
My colleage at work has a pink 911!! and its a good motor so I wouldn't blame you if you went for one. I would if I had 80K to spare.

Chrisp,
996 is a great motor, looks sounds and goes fantastic. Its however not the morst practical motor on earth. That probably goes for any 911, i would not have a 993 purely as the interior is mince in comparison and in the similar price region. 996 is a fast GT,not an out and out sportscar(who needs that eveyday)
. If you need more bootroom the C2 is better but associated with loss of 4WD 'control'. I cannot however comment on the real difference between C2 and C4.
Cheers

Practicality isnt a problem I have a 5 door Focus for practicality, shopping, commutting. The 996 would purely be a toy . The thing that interested me was the 4wd version, I know the 2wd is suppose to be more of a purists motor but I am a crap driver and need every help I can get .

Seen as a "standard" new 911 has 2wd and 316 bhp and weighes 100kgs less than a JDM STI and a top speed of 177mph I would say the STI would have the initial grip and pull off (due to 4wd) but the 911 would catch and go past given enough road. Having saiod that the 911 does 0-60 in 5.0 seconds so the STI would have to work really hard on pull off to even pull a gap.
