Stopped by the Police??

Mycroft; "Now I am sympathetic to the rozzer who got a kicking, but the level of resentment he felt the brunt of is of his and his colleagues making, the fact that a good guy gets a beating is just as sad as the good driver losing his licence doing 120mph on a clear M'way"
This is possibly the most thoughtless and un-forgivable statement made yet. The comparison between the assaulted officer trying to make an arrest, and a driver breaking the law, regardless of circumstances, is farcical, not to mention insulting to thousands of hard working police officers across the country.
I think the freely spoken posts within this thread serve as a better indication of police popularity than your 16 adult drivers.

Ok, you seem to have missed my point here. Your 'sympathy' for the officer and his injuries is one thing. Your statement that the fault in this incident lies with him and his colleagues is the offensive part, not to mention the bizarre comparison made between this sad occurrence, and your hypothetical 120mph on a motorway offence. The tragedy of the assault, and the ban for the driver have very little in common. Any clearer?
I withdraw the comment made regarding your table discussion, but add in it's place, that of my 18 closest colleagues, just 2 would have a non-favourable view in this respect, and the discussion has been had many times before.

'Hypothesis'.....a young mans Father (or one of his mates Father) loses a job due to this 120mph stint on the M'way, the family suffer privations as a result, the crime appears to have only one victim, the offender, he has done no harm to anyone else he has just driven too quickly, yet the ramifications are huge, out of all proportion to the crime, those around this family note the privations/marriage stress, etc etc. Remember he has not broken into a house, he has not hit an old lady over the head with a crowbar.
You say he has done no harm and 'just' driven quickly, and yet this man (presumably) was aware that by doing 120mph he was not only breaking the law, but risking being banned from driving.
This man, and many others, should start taking some responsibility for his own actions - if he had children that were likel;y to suffer as a result of his ban from driving then he should not have been speeding.
Regardless of the perceived rights or wrongs of the traffic regulations most motorists are aware, or certainly should be aware, of the consequences of their actions. Said 'man' should take responsibility for his own actions.
To suggest that resentment is justifiably caused by the actions of an irresponsible man in your example - and then to somehow attach that to the police is wrong. IMHO.
There's a saying 'if you can't do the time then don't do the crime'.

I would say that is rather dependant on the time being relative to the crime. And I've done my time twice.
How about the guy who does 101mph on a deserted bit of road at 4:00am he is totally familiar with, gets booked...does his time like a good boy but finds out that in the longer term it still costs him his marriage? (well...engagement in my case). You could argue she was not the right girl for him, maybe.....but a momentary lack of judgement is a lot to punish for. That is why there is a difference between "Manslaughter" and "Murder".
Speeding is becoming treated by society in similar terms to "attempt to manslaughter".
I am not whining: I was a bad boy and I deserved everything I got. Did I learn my lesson?
Do I still drive a 200bhp+ car?
Go figure.

Steve , in all sincerity ,that is a bitch, and as someone once said "life is a picture so sad that no one artist would ever dare paint it" part of which ,in this context would mean i guess"**** happens " & will continue to as long as we exist, life is unfair and will remain that way, etc etc.(it's also immposibly convaluted and complex, ****** eh,,,,,?)

Off topic a little but ...just searching old threads about cruise control, don'tknow if you've ever used it but i am tempted as this is a good help against impulse speeding etc if self control is subject to lapses, as mine is ,very usefull & relaxing.
#131
I know a few (non-scooby) guys who have found cruise control to be the answer on motorways. Not so good in a 30mph limit though.
And yeah...life can be bad sometimes. You should check out my muppet thread about my car hating me.
I can deal with it...what does not kill us makes us stronger, right?
And truly, suffering is the most poetic definition of self. lol

speeding akin to manslaughter or murder?
murder is based upon intent to commit whereas manslaughter demonstrates a lack of intent prior to the offence occuring.
therefore surely the hypothetical scooby owner doing 120mph on a deserted motorway still displays the same intent to commit the offence?
perhaps their defence should be:'i didn't mean to speed excessivley it just sort of happened!'

i've been stopped 3 times in last 3 years, 2 of these in last 12 1/2 months
1st was in a bmw 318 and i was rushing a bit though still under limit but it was a twisty anglesey lane. can't complain they just did a quick check for stolen and as it was between xmas and new year they wanted to do a breathaliser - bit of a laugh really as i got out of car before they got out and the one cop burst out laughing as he's a customer while his wpc passenger was all official till he told her to shut up
2nd and 3rd were in a volvo 440 (not exactly boy racer / joy rider material) 2nd was on dec 27th (spot a trend). officially it was cos id left front fogs on but cop was nicely truefull "it's just an excuse to stop you to check your breath also fair dues he also pointed out that the road ahead had had 3 crashes on it over the next 2 miles in the last hour due to ice which was nice of him but a bit wasted as i was only 200 yds from house.
3rd was cos tax disc had dropped down screen behind the shaded bit which was also fair but then his passenger (a wpc, spot another trend?) got all stroppy and decided that my back tyres were illegal. the first cop then askes me were i'd been, i replied work, he asks where, i say "bryntirion garage", he asks if i do mot tests, i reply yes he then tells wpc to, and this is a quote
" **** off about those tyres, there's nothing wrong with them"
if i wasn't a tester i guess i'd have had a defect note
p.s. tyres had 2.5 and 3 mm of tread on them

I really don't see any problem in arming the Police. Are we the only country in the world who doesn't? There can't be many. I would say there was a much better chance that Nathan would not have been injured if he had been armed at the time, wouldn't you? What do you think, Nathan?
#136
but arming now might be ok...
but soon people might shoot police first
or steal their gun and shoot other people
not a good idea to arm all police
as for stopped by the police...
stopped a few times - no offences
all but once have the police been friendly
but the one time has made me aware that its a lottery as to what happens
can you record the stopping? like use a tape recorder?

Sonic;
ARUs often live on the motorways ('cos they can get to the maximum number of places within a force area in the minimum of time) But 'cos incidents requiring ARUs are mercifully rare in the vast majority of police areas, they have to do something constructive with their time, so Traffic Policing is the obvious thing. A well managed Police Area will have reduced the non-ARU presence accordingly but, of course, there MUST be a Taffic car available to take over in case the ARU is required for its proper purpose.
Nothing sinister (other than the need for ARUs in the first place!!)

Mycroft, I think lack of respect for our Police is more a comment on society in general, not just of the Police. Remember, YOU are a member and representative of society. And your repeated use of the adjective 'filth' in connection with all Police is truly offensive.
BTW, I once asked why we only see speed traps on nice sunny days. Burr replied that when the weather was bad they were too busy clearing up RTAs. Logical, I guess, although hardly a legit reason.
John F - that link about cash and cameras. Has anyone else read it? Warning: so long you may die before getting to the end Very good points, but could have been written in a couple of pages. Thanks anyway
Richard.

Hi Phil
Thanks for the explanation
I was surprised that was all, to see 4 guys get out armed with heavy duty guns
I asked how come they were there, and they said that they were closest at the time of the call
Didnt have a problem with them being there, just prefer us NOT to have guns
Ive been shot at once, at it isnt very nice !
Steve

Some Police officers scare me.
Police officers with guns scare the ****e out of me.
More Armed Response Vehicles yes, routine arming......No.
I'm sure there may be a time when it happens though.
Now Tazers or Stun guns, those I wouldn't mind carrying.
Thanks for the posts on this thread since my last.
Nathan..
BTW Phil what did you do before you retired? You know a fair bit about the ARV's in Kent on the SRN.

Agreed. But I'd rather if the police is armed with them stun pistols. Its similar to tazers but it the wires can be launched to 10m if I recall correctly.

"evening all"
I would not walk the streets with gun and neither would most of my colleagues. And for that matter I would not like to see some of my colleagues with a gun. God help us all.
As for all the other bollocks going on here. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I assume that the relentless flack the old bill get when someone posts a moan about being pulled for the 1000th time by the same copper just goes to show the level of intrigue and thinly veiled police wannabes amongst you.
Join up and persecute innocent members of the public, after all that what we were all born to do. E mail me for an application you all fit the BILL nicely.
Now I’m off to find some new reasons to pull people

Steve . I done some work in the almonsbury traffic unit recently, they where a bunch of tossers, I put them in the same league as "football refs" I think its a "control thing" who wants a job driving at 60 mph on a motorway wearing a yellow coat..

A lot of idiots in the US have guns too, as well as sensible people
There is enough shooting that goes on, in my local areas, in the fact the post office less than a mile from my house was held up by armed folk
My mum works for the post office less than 1/2 a mile from that one
I have also been witness to an Armed Robbery where the shotgun was fired (the being shot at was a different incident)
the more people that have guns the worse it will be
I do agree with the 'stun' guns ala Tazer style for the police
