You should always start training your chest with a bench press !!!
Its the best way to build up your chest. I always do 4 sets on a flat the 4 incline or 4 incline dumb bell press

i have just got out of hospital today after my spinal fusion op!!!
got to say its the most pain i have ever had in my life but i will only get better from now on.
should be walking again in about 2 weeks and able to start light training in about 4 months.
can't wait mate![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
remember, always use your belt!
as for creatine, i used MET-RX mass action with added HMB, seemed to work better than any other i have tried.

Incline dumbels ---
Get a bench and put it on a incline and just do dumbell presses, down to your shoulder and push together towards your chest. Hard to do much else if you go heavy on bench press then heavy on these. Thats why I alternate them with Incline bench press.

On dumbell press I can do my last set of 10 with a 36KG dumbell (each hand) But if I push myself I can do 5 or 6 with a 40kg.
But saying that I have hardly been over the Christmas and last night was my first trip back and It felt like I had never been in a gym for 10 years. And it was jam packed. Looks like the whole of Newcastle decided to get fit for 2003 !!!!! Tw@ts can't wait until they all give up Roll on Feb.

Grovesy,
Lol, I know what you mean with Jan/Feb. Last night at my gym there were more newcomers than regulars. I always find myself looking at them and trying to guess who will stay the distance.
Super-Si,
How can you only Dumbell press 25/30Kg dumbells and yet smith machine press 120Kg!! You must be using the most frictionless Smith Machine I have ever heard of.
I can (when I get into the swing of things after christmas & New Year
) Dumbell Press 40Kg Dumbells for 20 reps on a small incline and I can only Bench Press around ~130Kg with an Olympic bar.
Damian.

Damian,
You can free bench 130's? Properly? **** on the bench?
If so, that's a good weight. Even in my prime, i rarely went above 120kg for sets. And on heavy days we only got to 150/160. Seeing somebody bench 130 properly, full range, no bouncing, still makes me stop what i'm doing, even today.

Smith press is for shoulder, incline bench is chest.
To different workouts + very different inclines.
Smiths about 60-70degres.
Incline bench is about 30 degrees

Telboy,
No Cheating, it's a good clean bench press.
I have been training for over 15 years now. I am now 5' 9" and 16st (thanks to Christmas & New Year Lol!) and so I think that is a pi$$ poor Bench press to be honest considering my height and bodyweight.
Anyone else who can rep 40Kg Dumbells like I can usually is capable of repping 140Kg on a flat bench.
Super Si,
Lol, I'm with you now.

Guys,
Just been reading your comments and I have been going for about 6 months now but just keeping fit and doing weights but nothing to serious....I was wanting to start to use creatine to perhaps help a bit and have been looking around at various options...has anyone got an opinion on the liquid creatine it says that you do not need to bulk up on it you just take it before each workout..
Thanks
Sean

Damian,
Don't agree mate, not unless you train in an exceptional gym. I could dumbell incline press 50's, 55's on a good day. That doesn't equate to an automatic 140kg flat bench. Anything over 300lbs for reps in old money is going some, whatever the magazines say. Sure, i have very long arms (6'3"), but in 17 years that i saw, few guys had an honest 300lbs bench press workout to their name.

Super Si,
When I started training at the age of 15 I weighed 8st 11lbs 11 1/2" arms and a 33" chest. I desparately wanted to get bigger and in order to slow my metabolism I followed;
Instead of running, walk,
Instead of walking, ride a bike,
Instead of riding a bike, take a bus or drive.
Following this advise, training and eating properly I gained 3 stone 3 months! Lol! The instructor thought I was going to be the next Mr. Universe. (Not with my genetics)
I have now come full circle at the age of 30 and now weigh 16st and can't stop putting weight on!
Oh and following on from previous advise in this thread I have acheived this through progessively squatting heavier and heavier weights.
Damian.

I can do a few reps with a 40k dumbell but I cant flat bench 140k not even on the smiths machine....
When you say 130k with an olympic bar are you including the bar or 65k on each side. Either way its still quite alot.

Telboy,
I think not being happy about what I have achieved keeps me going and there is still the desire to improve. I don't think I will ever be satisfied (the same way as never being satisfied with the power my scoob was putting out).
But at 16st this is just over 100Kg and I can bench 130Kg.
As an example, At the 1988 Seoul Olympics Ben Johnson in a training session miscalculated how much he had on the bar as it was in Kg's and managed to bench press 190Kg at a bodyweight of only 12st (76Kg). Fair enough he was on the gear but it is still one hell of a lift to say he wasn't a powerlifter.
Another example, I saw a TV program a number of years ago trying to find the fittest sportstar. Frank Bruno was on and at 17st plus he only managed to bench 120/125Kg. That was not so impressive. Having said that his pecs did not suggest he prioritise that area but more his shoulders and arms to correlate with his boxing. In the same program an American Footballer for some London ran out of weights and benched all the weight they had there at the time! He eventually went on to win it overall easily.
I would guess that Stallone in his prime as a bodyweight of ~12st would be able to bench over 300lbs.
Super Si,
Keep up the good work, sounds like your progressing nicely.
Damian.

Although, to keep this in perspective, the weights we're discussing are child's play for some of the strength sports athletes, particularly American footballers. Sure, they're all on gear ("probably"!), but a few years ago, one of the Detroit Lions running backs (Saunders, i think (ChrisB?)) was discussing his training. He was only a short guy, 5'7" or something if i remember correctly, but he could squat 650lbs. Now THAT i'd like to see...!

Grovesy,
With the Ben Johnson thing, yeah I found it impressive as well! No wonder he's so explosive out of the blocks! Lol!
Super Si,
Arnold in his day was a strong mother$ucker. I have a book at home on training which says he has deadlifted 750lbs, benched over 500lbs and could do barbell curls with 300lbs.
Although they are bodybuilders some of the strength these guys display is very impressive whether they are on gear or not.
