Red face

I didn't see that. *2/3rds* of them could do 650lbs+..??

The World Record is only 755lbs (or something very similar)!!

Si, no, the bar wouldn't snap. I think they're designed to withstand 1,000lbs or thereabouts. Not that i've ever put that anywhere near the test!!

Detroit Lions running backs (Saunders, i think (ChrisB?))
Almost correct, Barry Sanders. Bloody good RB and he just retired with a good few years ahead of him.

Saunders would be Deon 'Primetime' Saunders.

Some interesting comments

I have to disagree with you about Ben Johnson though - I don't know how much he could lift, but there is absolutely NO WAY he was on ~12stone in weight at SPEN555 suggests. He was MUCH bigger and heavier than that. ......

Stallone too.

I am 12.5 stone and very much in shape but would be dwarfed by either of those two.

Super Si,

I have on video taped back in 1987 'Pure Strength' to 'The title for the Strongest Man that ever lived'.

Only Kazmaier, Sigmarrson (spelling right?) and Capes were invited.

Sigmarrson was in the best shape of his life for Strongman events and won 8 events out of 10. In the process he set a number of world records, one being the deadlift. They used the axle off wooden cart/horse drawn carriage and from memory Sigmarrson lifted something stupid like 1,153lbs. The lift I thought though was a lot easier than a convential deadlift as the bar started above the knee. I have in the past deadlifted 220Kg but doing a partial deadlift from just above the knees by having the bar in a rack I have done 300Kg so it is easier.

If your interested in the strongman events, the BSM is being held at Scarborough I think from memory.

Dace R,

As strange as it seems but sprinters are not heavy. You can tell when they packing the size. Take John Regis, He was about 14 or 14.5st. Linford was only about 13st 13.5st. So for a short ar$e like Ben Johnson it is not unconceivable that he is 12st.

I remember seeing a bodybuilder at a gym I used to train at and he had a very good physique. At the time someone told me he weighed 12st and I did not believe them. So when he weighed himself I went up afterwards and looked at the scales and sure enough he weighed 12st.

A lot of bodyweight depends on fat content and bone density. Heavy boned people will be a lot more for obvious reasons.

As an ex sprinter, who competed against Christie (in fact beat him once in Nottingham....... but he did pull up with a hamstring strain!!!), I can tell you he weighed more than 14st. I was 5'10 and 12st 4, and absolutely tiny in comparison to almost all the top power sprinters (both in height and weight) (Fenton Campbell, Darren Campbell, Christie, Rosswess, even Lincoln Asquith + Colin Jackson). Ben Johnson would have been a lot closer to 15st than 12 too. These guys do look a lot smaller on the telly than they really are - honest

Scumbag,

So at Ben Johnson's height and 15st are you telling me he is the same size and build as Mike Tyson in his prime? When Mike Tyson first won the World Heavyweight championship he was 15st 10lbs and he was a damn sight bigger than Ben Johnson. On a pro-rata basis then John Regis must be 18st+.

Look at Steve Backley, he's about 16 1/2 st. He's dwarf's the sprinters.

I don't think so. LOL!!!

I agree with Scumbag (and also happen to be an ex-sprinter myself - although not in that league !!!!!) - my best 100m was 10.8sec when I was 21.

And I am 12.5 stone - usually one of the smallest ........

I would rather be strong and look ok than be like that, but you have got to admire there dedication. I know they pump themselves full of gear but they still train 10 times harder than most people.

But I couldn't be arsed with painting myself with fake tan.

it does seem a bit poofy, doesn't it - the fake tan and small speedos bit i mean

and all the posing around you have to do, looking like a complete gimp

but yes their dedication is something to behold

That's what i did Si. To the 1993 UK finals. Although i never tried horse steroids, or HGH. And don't think bodybuilders take any less steroids than powerlifters. They just train differently and get rid of the fat for competition.

On the Ben Johnson thing, i'd agree on the 14 stone estimate. No way was he 12 stone with that much muscle on him. No way.

Si, let's get the "strength" thing straight.

In 1994, i benched 156kg, deadlifted 212kg and squatted 192.5kg.

When you've equalled or bettered all those, come back and criticise, my friend!

They're all singles, yes, which i did in a local powerlifting competition i had a go at when i had to give up competitive bodybuilding. Which means below parallel squat, straight back deadlift and pause on chest bench.

It was that competition which taught me i could never be a competitive powerlifter, as with my bodyweight (i think about 17st4lbs at the time), other guys six inches shorter than me were doing roughly 25% more weight. No contest.

I said "closer to 15 than 12"

I've just looked up on some of the stats - not easy getting weights of people, but I found...
John Regis at 215lbs (5'10" and therefore 6" shorter than Christie).
Dwayne Chambers - 183 lbs
Steve Backley - 220lbs
Roger Black - 180lbs
Dwaine Chambers - 183 lbs
Phillips Idowu (triple jumper) - 196 lbs

Now these are the "official" stats, however you must remember that it is very rare for athletes to ever give a weight on any entry form, so they are frequently taken from when they were young (eg a similar stat on Darren Campbell gave him as 158lbs, which I KNOW is way too light - I trained with him for 3 years, and might have been correct when he was 18, but not now)

Scumbag,

Those bodyweights are what I would expect to see.

The difference between Chambers and Regis looks about right. 183lbs is 13st and I can't see Chambers being much more than this, maybe at a push up to 13st 10lbs.

I find it amazing how people add weight to a persons physique when they have trained. I remember when I was at school when I was 13.5st everyone said I was more like 15st.

When a physique is emphasized by a low body fat it gives the 'impression' of size. If you go to an amateur Bodybuilding show even the small weight class guys are large compared to your average Joe Bloggs on the street.

I bet no one will believe that Arnold weighed just over 17st when he was winning the Olympia in the 70's and he's 6' 3".

Damian.
