Question

Super Si,

I presume by Rob D you mean Rob Dixon?

What kind of weights have you seen him lifting in the gym?

I had a training partner who worked on the door with Lee Bowers who has done BSM and WSM and he would do seated military presses with 180Kg+ for reps!!!

He also had a Vauxhall Corsa with two bars he could pull out of the back so he could lift it! Lol!

Damian.

Damian,
I'm not disagreeing about people looking heavier than they are - just initially with the comments saying that Ben Johnson was 12 stone.
I guess one of the major factors of how heavy/tall people look is the people they are compared with. Colin Jackson always looks about 5'7", but is actually 6'1", although he is usually smaller than anyone else in the race (same for Daley Thompson)

One question - WHY??

What do you achieve? I know one chap who was ultra fit, muscles the size of small countries, worked out for hours a day and couldn't even walk himself upstairs...

Personally I find bulging muscles a complete turn-off. I far prefer work-honed muscles on blokes.

But there's a difference between toned and fit and ugly bulging muscles sprouting everywhere...

A 6-pack on a bloke looks like a beetle's belly, IMHO, which is horrible...

LOL..maybe to some people, aye.. Others don't like anorexics. All down to personal taste, I guess.

Fair play to you - I hope you get what you desire, body-wise, with as little injury as possible.

Just makes me shudder...

Cool

Good question Mice. Personally, it was initially a desire to get bigger. But once you've pushed X weight, the desire to push X+1% becomes strong.

In the media, muscular guys are generally portrayed as more successful, with women amongst other things. The problem with bodybuilding is that it becomes a snowball and you don't know when to stop. A bit like anorexia in reverse.

These days i recognise it for what it is, and don't have the same need to be as big as i was. But there's no doubt, being able to "look after" myself because of my physical presence is something i've never tired of.

CV???

Like all things, I guess, TelBoy - some prefer muscles, others prefer "normal" sized blokes. And if we're going on media hype to dictate what we look like, all women would be on diets striving to be a size 8 no matter if it kills us.....oh wait...we are...

I agree it can just become an obsession, the building-up thing
(no personal offence intended earlier TelBoy btw about the bodybuilding thing). The bigger you get, the more you want to get bigger

personally I have gotten about as big as I ever want to get (girlfriend agrees), but now just work hard at getting ripped and stronger

I wish I could put as much effort into CV work as I do with weight training. But no matter what I try I just get bored very quickly.

When i was playing rugby serious for the 18's i loved it.

Id do 3mile fun twice a week. 6min mile because tread mill wouldnt go any faster. 1m:34 sec 500m row. 3:35 for 1000meters. (felt fast)

Now i just dont have the get-up-and-go

Ditto... I can happily run to something and from something no matter what the distance, (within reasonable parameters ) but running for the sake of it is boring...

Don't get too caught up in the weight Si, it's not the be-all and end-all.

Full range of movement and real intensity are more important. They really are.

When you say "hurt", you do just mean you struggled, don't you??

Do you have a spotter? Really, really useful on incline presses, and flyes too if you can find someone who knows what they're doing.

I don't like go heavy on dumbell press with out someone spotting me. But saying that its amazing how much strenght you can find when you think your going to drop somthing heavy on your own head.
