Thank god Im not the only one with the same problem - I too have mega bad insomnia at the mo, the only way Ill actually get sleep is to get utterly plastered and then that isnt proper sleep.

Ive tried the following:

going to bed earlier, going to bed later, stopping caffeine, watching TV till I really feeel tired and none of them have had too much effect.

Im putting it down to too many things going on in my life ie - looking for a new job, worried about getting made redundant, wimin etc............. Just need to switch my brain off, but thats proving harder than I wanted.....

Katana,

Had the same problem of not sleeping @ night. Always a night person and feel like death in the morning. (probably due to work shifts etc).

But the thing i have found that works for me in melatonin. I take a tablet 30 mins b4 i am going to crash out and it does get me off to kip.

From my non-medical background, i think it basically releases the things that are normally present when u r sposed to b going to sleep.

I dont use it every night, but it does work for me, so if you have'nt tried it. Maybe take a look .

Cheers

Dan

Wink

Try Kalms from most chemists. Its all herbal and does help.
I'm also on 5htp which is a precursor to seratonin and it helps too.
Well, it kept me rushing like a ******* at NYE so it must be good!

Done some more reading, and found a bit more how sleep and serotonin are related.

The hypothesis that cerebral serotonin has a role in the process of sleep is strongly supported by two series of experiments. (i) Inhibition of the synthesis of serotonin at the level of tryptophan hydroxylase by p-chlorophenylalanine leads to total insomnia which is reversible; return to normal sleep is effected by the injection of 5-hydroxytryptophan, the immediate precursor of serotonin. (ii) Total destruction of serotonin-containing neurons located in the raphe system (as determined by histofluorescence ) also leads to total insomnia. A three-way correlation exists between the extent of destruction of the raphe, the decrease in cerebral serotonin, and the resulting insomnia.

Confused ? ... you bet!

WIth regards to the suggestion about serotonin and 5htp, and how they are more linked to stress/depression than insomnia, a lot of what I've read seems to link insomnia to depression/stress, even if it's only mild, chances are - and I think for me, not sleeping makes me more depressed/stressed, and creates a vicious circle.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/ seems quite useful.

Nightnurse works for me but I tend to wake up after 5 hours or so so take it according to what time I want to get up.A few bottles of strong lager works too.You could always try a bit of hanky panky with a young lady(guarenteed to get you snoring before she comes back from the bathroom) or if you're on your own, crack one off.

Guys

About 18 months ago i suffered from total insomnia for a period of some weeks this led to me being hospitalised. Now i am not saying this is going to happen to you, most people who suffer from insomnia come out the other side with no help from anyone but there are exceptions and i was one.

It turned out that i was suffering from Anxiety i.e for many reasons i was getting my nerves in a real state, since then i have been taking a drug called Venlafaxine which is from the SSRI group (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors)this drug is an anti-depressant but i am not suffering from depression however anxiety and depression are closely related.
Over the past year i have learned much of how our nervous system works and in learning I now understand the symptoms to the degree they do not bother me.

Apart from the consultant at the BUPA hospital I have found a particular book a massive help, this book is not directed at insomnia(although it does have a chapter on sleep and its importance) but understand you suffer from insomnia because of somthing else that is happening to you and that is where this book helps.

The book is called :Self-Help for your Nerves by DR Claire Weekes ISBN 0-7225-3155-9

Good Luck to you all.

I should add that i have made a complete recovery and are now phasing the tablets out, if there is anything that i have learnt from this it is not to be afraid to get help when things like this get too bad.

hi katana..
i find the 'net aggravates my insomnia.. all that info out there.. LOL
my brain goes into overdrive

my "record" is 4hrs total "sleep" in 8 days..

started during when my wife was seriously ill.. the stress had/has me so wired I could barely think.
I was a living ghost.. who needs drugs.. the hallucinations I had were spooking me big time.
things like road signs animating themselves as I went past, or deer walking right out in front o f me when they werent actually there...

funny the tricks the mind plays on you with lack of sleep.. i find i get paranoid too if I dont sleep for about 3-4 days..

these days I watch movies and try to relax as best as I can .. eventually i drop off.

good luck mate. its not fun i know.
