Who remembers the first "Real" 200bhp hot hatch in the 90's?

The Golf G60 was more powerful than the rallye I think, but it wasnt available to buy in the uk.
gaz
yup just checked, I agree the G60 ltd was over 200brake, LHD, and 2 wheel drive, put a 68mm pulley on it and you`ll get that bit closer to 240bhp...
p.s golfs rule, I have a mk1 gti (on twin 40`s 160bhp ish)

I had a 1981 Triumph TR7V8 convertible, 4.3 litre race spec - still used it on road though. 295 BHP and aboot 310 ft.lbs or torque. All through RWD LSD, shortwheelbase = you can spin it in the wet without moving steering wheel LOL
I had a rover 220 Turbo coupe - crap handling, crap brakes but still an ok car.

Just how many of teh sugggestions, so far are actually hot HATCHES, and have 200bhp ???? About 2 or 3 i think...
Metro 6R4 coud be close, thought id hardly say it was a hot hatch. Lancia Delta Integrale is about the closest so far I think, although almost in the supercar for its day.

SEAT couldn't sell the 10 cars they made and ended up selling them at about 22k.
Integrale definately top of my list for hot hatch king! Actually thinking of buying one when I get back from the US

if you could get a dolly sprint to stay together for 1000 miles yould be doing ok , that isnt a hatchback , i think ford , er escort BDA had the 16v aswell , but that isnt new , 4 valve per cylinder engines existed in the 20's .

Just to correct, first production hatchback was Austin A40...
Agree with what youre saying but some of the 80s/90s hatchbacks that had under 200bp now make well over it, hence my comment on TT's version of the 16v Golf at 180bhp... Sold over 60 units so i guess thats a production run... now with modern electrics and proper fueling, easily over 200bhp today...
Integrale is a contender here, but most cars of that era had max of about 140bhp, but dont forget weight was half what most modern hatches are today, giving decent(ish) 0-60 times.
Jon.

Don't forget a lot of the older cars are seriously lighter than the modern equivalents - more like 900kg than today's 1250 kg, so power-to-weight would be better. Old tyres and suspension set up probably slowed them downa bit again. Old brakes didn't slow them down at all!!!

Mumgo, my point exactly... so did they need 200bhp? probabaly not due to light weight, no aircon, 2WD etc etc... would I swap my Scooby for one.... er no, defo not in winter... all snug and warm in aircon'd car with surefooted handling.... ahhh....

I remember seeing it at the motorshow as well and being mightily impressed at everything - until I saw the £40k price tag.
Not even sure if any were sold in the UK in the end, don't think it was viable or reliable enough.
The 150bhp 2.0 16V was selling for under £15k which was very good value at the time (most stuff with 150bhp was 17-19k)
