What to look out for on a 993

996 v's 993 debate , it depends what you are looking for, for me if I'm spending that type of money on a car I expect it to be evident when I'm sitting in it. 993 interior was less than I would have put up with and certainly caused my wife to screw up her nose, therefore effectively ending the debate .
Those preaching the death of the 996 are a little out of touch, there will be a definate demand from Boxter owners for upgrades to 996 as they are a whole new Porsche customer base without water/oil prejudices. Thats just IMHO of course.
If your buying a Porker, make sure you look at the interior of 993 to 996. I believe its an important factor, especially if you have another voice involved

The 993 vs 996 thing reminds me of the vinyl vs CD debate from a few years ago. I loved the 993 when it came out, but next to a 996 it now looks and feels horribly dated. Sure, some people will still prefer the older car, and the relative numbers of cars produced will probably mean some overlapping of residuals between the. But I'd take the 996 everytime, overall it's simply a better car.

Its goo - interesting looking article on whether you should get a 993 or a Boxter. Being the ignoramus that I am I consider that a no-brainer surely???

Looking at some of the prices of used Boxters I think there are also lots out there who want Boxters - I'm not criticising them just commenting, me, I've never even sat in one.
Personally the only Porker that makes me cream my pants in the 993, so its a case of getting the highest spec one affordable. Probably C2S is the best choice as the 4 wheel drive option is expensive and I can't push it to the extreme where the 4-wheel drive is used. Must get the S version thoug, cos I LURV BIG BUTTS!

The 996's are 'better' daily drivers in many ways (better interior comfort and PSM, where fitted) but as pure playthings, they could be accused of lacking a little 'edge'.
Whenever I get around to moving somewhere with decent garage space there will be a place set aside for a mint 993 or an immaculate Carrera 3.2 (or both!) ;-)
It's amazing that Porsche is the most profitable car maker (per car sold) but that the list price of the current 911 is almost the same as it was a decade ago when they were facing bankruptcy.
Clearly they have more efficient production these days and can share costs over a larger production run (incl Boxsters) and that UK taxes on new cars no longer exist but it make you think that Porsches are not quite what they once were :-( Nevermind, they are still very impressive and I would drive a front engined RWD Alfa 147 GTA beater from Stuttgart (or Finland ;-) )

This is something I have been wondering about. When I was up at Paul Stephens he told me that, so long as nothing went wrong the basic servicing costs of a 996 were less than the 993. Reason given was the more modern ie efficient servicing process.
However once bits start going pop then the part for a 996 are considerably more expensive than the 993.
Given the 996 parts are more modern ie also (presumably) more efficiently made and (am I wrong here?) the considerable overlap between Boxter and 996 parts this greater cost seems odd.
Perhaps (conspiracy theory hat on) this explains current Porsche profitability ?
