This must be a new record for being caught speeding in a car. Seem to remember someone got caught doing 153mph in an M5 a while back which hit the headlines!!

He's obviously lying. A P1 would blow up way before it gets to 80 mph, let alone 160.

Am I the only one that doesn't believe this? If you were caught doing 162mph on a UK road would that have not made the press. Can't remeber ever reading of a car being caught going that fast in the UK.

If its true the I feel for you mate! Better get used to walking

Cool

There was also an Aston Martin that was clocked at 154mph about a year after the celebrated M5 case. BTW the M5 driver got 6 months in jail, mainly because he just stood in the dock and said 'I was perfectly safe at that speed'.

My brother Chris (http://www.christurner.com) told me some years back of a fellow PCGB member who was out on the M20 in a tasty Porsche turbo of some description, and got tempted into a dice with a big Healey or some such Brit crap - no contest of course, except that he found himself roadblocked when he came off the Mway, and when the other car turned up it was smoking and leaking oil from various engine orifices, and all the dashboard lights were on. The police driver said he'd topped out at 135mph and the Porsche had driven away from him. They did him for *dangerous* driving, but he went to court armed with the complete technical spec of his car and successfully argued that it wasn't *dangerous* because the car was designed to do those speeds on such a road. Got it changed to *careless* driving and a relatively trivial punishment.

why do folk seem surprised when they get tickets, 162 mph ffs, it's hardly a lack of concentation is it!

Don't get me wrong, I'm big friends with the lil pedal on the right and I'm all for upping speeding limits but hell, to think your're being hard done by for going twice over the limit, give us a break!

Do you have more details of where and when?

Got to admit i'm slightly curious how you got caught at that speed. My Evo6 does 169.9mph on the limiter in 5th .....apparently(with 360bhp, standard gearing and new tires) though apparently at that speed the speedo will show 171mph

Now if i was to try this (if i was 'stupid' enough to ) then i would make sure it was about midnight, during the week on a perfectly empty M62 .. oops, motorway.

So come on, please dont tell it was during the day? ? ! !

you wanna be careful of that M62...
bought scoob 4th July....Banned for 42 days on the 8th July, had four days to enjoy new scoob before it was wrenched from under me. Mum had to drive me back from Nuneaton court (in my new scoob)

nothing to do with driving the scoob of course, Even british justice couldn't pull their finger out that quickly
was in my 306 doing 118 (flat out D-Turbo) back in the summer,
empty motorway on a sunny Sunday too....wank3rs

Red face

Two things spring to mind -

First time I drove a P1 the salesman told me that all P1's were limited to 155mph (still over twice the limit I know - but it's the principal, have the police got correct calibration?....)

Second - the law is an ***. The guy who pleaded guilty to killing that little girl recently only spent a year inside for killing someone previously and had a driving conviction record that I would have gone grey before I'd got to the end if I read it! The law seems to prosecute speeders on worse-case scenario not what actually happened e.g. empty motorway 3am etc etc)

Question

Personally I've only ever driven really fast on (private ) motorways during daylight hours! Is that particularly risky - in the dark its pretty hard to see police cars, whereas a Skyline @ 160 is pretty easy to pick out from other cars even in the dark!

Back on topic - a 4 year ban is just pointless - I really can't see what it'll achieve, surely it just means that you'll have less means to pay the fine! I think the irony is if you'd nicked a P1, had no license and driven it this speed, chances are you'd have got a £300 fine and a suspended sentence for your first sentence! The legal system is wrong in this country!

If you were clocked at 162, what was the speedo showing? More i assume?
What pushed you to nail it like this?
I had mine on my private runway at 140 and bottled it through fear of the airport Police
If i was you i'd look into the whole "can an impreza do 162" thing and possibly get official manufacturers figures involved. You haven't got anything to loose.
What are the plans for your P1?

what i find funny is the fact that they said it was 4 years to make an example of him, then told him not to publicise it! Who the hell is the example for then?

also a few years ago my wife and i were nearly killed by a wealthy drunk driver. he got a 18 month ban and a 800 quid fine.

(cloud and silver lining mode)
the good newsis with 4 years off and no driving costs you have the time to mod your P1 and get it to break the 200mph mark

I smell a troll.

This would have been front page news for the Daily Mail if it were true.

To check the details, we'll need to see either a copy of the court summons, or details of the court that it took place in, and when. Until then, I don't believe it. Sorry.

Thumbs down

Like the boring bloke in the pub: "Lets say the ban was one more than 3 and one less than 5" - wink, wink - why not just say "it was 4"?

And for those who compare a 4 year ban with a 6-month prison sentence and say that our boastful friend was hard done by, remember that a ban, however long, is after all just a ban whereas a prison sentence, however short - or even suspended - is a prison sentence, i.e. a serious criminal record that will make it very hard for you to get a job or even a visa to travel to some countries.

I love going fast, and have had a short ban myself, and the holier than thou posse on this BBS make me cringe, but if this is true (and I doubt it is) you deserve what you got.

If it really were 162mph then it would be a record. It would also have recieved some publicity. Even with a squeaky clean driving record a prison sentence of 28 days would be lenient.

As the car has a maximum speed of less than this, an excellent defence could be raised.

Colin.

I've seen 160 on the clock in my slightly modded MY00 (with five people in the car) so a P1 should easily go off the clock.

As for the four year ban that makes the story smell.

Hate to sound like a boring bugger, but I must be the only person that agrees with crush.
Its stupidly dangerous. Thats track speed. If something goes wrong on the track you risk your own life. If something goes wrong at 162 on the motorway, you risk the lives of many innocent people.

A prison sentance would be rediculous, they should be for violent criminals. Bans and fines have the same effect with no impact on the tax payer to keep people in prison.

Once again a post about what a hero the man is for achieving some incredibly high speed on the public roads, and how unfair the authorities are for taking strong positive action over what is a heinous offence. In actual fact it really is not very clever or brave to wind up a car to such speeds in a straight line, so why is it necessary to boast about it. No one finds it the least bit impressive I can assure you.

I think Father Jack is right to say that it did not really happen. You are more likely to be one of those sad people who will say anything in an effort to impress. I would not be surprised if you dont even own a P1. The trouble is, people who read these posts will assume that all Scooby drivers are tarred with the same brush and are likely to drive in the same manner. We all like to enjoy the performance and handling of our cars but there is a degree beyond which one's behaviour can only be described as grossly irresponsible. If you were really driving at those sort of speeds then you qualify for that description in "Spades". There is no way that you can justify behaviour like that on the public roads.

If you were really banned for 4 years then I reckon you were lucky not to be in prison. As Father Jack says you would then have to carry a criminal record for the rest of your life. When you get your licence returned your insurance will be out of sight-was it all worth it?

If you want to drive like that, then the place to do it is at a track day. You can fill your boots as much as you like down the straight bits. Trouble is, you may find it tough going trying to keep up with the others round the corners which is where the real skill shows, The fine would have bought you a lot of track time too.

maybe you should reflect on how you would feel if you had lost control for any kind of reason and destroyed a family in another car. Dont say it is not likely, the margins are very much reduced at those speeds.

Well said Leslie and from the west country too. I take it you don't travel with the SW lads who were all hitting over 150 on the M5 the other week.
