...just with no automotive engineering experience I'll put forward my point of view and say:

I love it It looks great, and, ok, the Scoop could do with being a little smaller - but does it *really* matter?! Would it stop you buying a car you wanted? ....wouldn't stop me. I think the overall package looks great and I can't wait (although I'll have to ) to get my hands on one.

A recent thread suggests that there's nothing wrong in waiting for your PPP.... it doesn't prejudice the fitting or the subsequent performance. Indeed, you'll have even MORE problem staying under 4000 rpm for the first 1000 Miles, with it fitted. Scoobies don't really loosen up until 5000+ Miles.

Quite understand you want it ASP, and it may well be that your Dealer will be able to arrange this for you. All I'm saying is, don't worry that your car has been prejudiced in any way if there's a delay: and that experience suggests that PPPs have in the past taken longer than we'd all (Prodrive included!) like to come to the market!

i thought the whole idea of the huge bulk of the scoop was because they increased the intercooler size again?

Just spent an half and hour driving around in the new STi after PDi'ing the thing this afternoon..

The car looks much much nicer than the 'OLD' Buyeye.. The lines are nicer, the front wing reflectors have disapeared etc etc..

As for the Scoop, well yes it is in Ya face when u drive the thing, Could'nt really keep my eyes off it!!!
Maybe any future owbers should have some singwritting done on the side that says "Elvis Appreciation Society" cos the scoop looks like a 50s Hair Do!!

The Subaru UK site is quoting the price for PPP on the Sti8 so I guess it will be available. Why shouldn't it be ?

i think it's as sexy as! it's so much better than the old sti7 and as for the interior new radio new colours just beats everu other model scoob hands down.

Feb, japanese performance reviewed the new car with big scoop say its not cosmetic, does indeed help cool the cooler.

Drive it and unless you're 4' 11" it doesn't make a blind nit of difference.

Test drove Days of Chelmsford's STi today & yes the scoop is bigger as is the intercooler it feeds.Hence the splitter to spread the air flow over it.

The overall height of the top edge IMHO is probably not much different to my UK300 in "drivers line of sight" terms.This is 'cos the bonnet slopes away more steeply to the front so countering the increased height of the scoop.So your view of the leading edge of the bonnet from on board is almost in line with the bottom edge of the windscreen.

Like anything that changes,you have to live with it a while before you get used to it.Same with the extra cog.

I own an STi7 and do a lot of driving in Germany (Autobahn) and my "little" scoop works just fine. I also have the moretes and I must say that with them the STi7 really looks better than the STi8. I do like the new steering wheel though. As far as the extra cooling, I simply do not believe it. A Digit Power STi7 came in 3rd place in the 24 hr Tuner Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring a couple of months ago with the original top mounted IC and scoop. Obviously it works!
The true story?: Subaru has suffered an image problem with the WRX bug eye and was desperate to come up with something new and more exciting. I love my STi7 but always thought it was just a little OTT (the Prodrive spoiler anyway) but could deal with it as the car is so good. On the other hand, the STi8 simply looks ridiculous and juvenile with that monstrosity of a scoop. Wait for the STi9 it will have a triple spoiler for the roof and side ventilation scoops for the trunk - Yum! I think Subaru is taking the risk of not being taken seriously anymore and appealing only to the really young driving around crossed eyed and mesmerized by their BIG scoop...

My MY01 WRX PPP with big MRT TMIC and full zorst (decat) will do me just fine until twin scroll is available on WRX / STi. 8-)
That scoop is ridiculous, you could probably put your hand through that scoop on the STI 8 and steal bits off of the engine... !
Anyone know how the size of a scoop affects the car's aerodynamics (drag) ?

...so we drive around in cars with massive spoilers on the back, gold alloys, exhausts that can be heard 5 miles away and the acronym for "sexually transmitted infection" written in pink all over the car... and we're worried about the size of our scoop ??????

I work in a wind tunnel and i can say that, from an aerodynamic point of view, its an incredibly inefficient place to locate a cooling intake. Even aside from that, surely on top of a hot engine is not the place to put something that cools - after all, heat rises doesn't it?

The larger scoop will swallow more air but the consequences for drag, front lift, wind noise and water management are too great(ever notice how the rain collects in the recirculation behind the normal scoop, think what its like with the new one!).

As usual the Stylists have won but no-one's taking responsibility for it. Peter Stevens was quoted as blaming September 11th for the scoop as it meant he couldn't fly over to the design meeting where the styling decision was made. Sounds to me a bit like "I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove anything".

I'm not sure how much I believe this assertion that it has a functional benefit, either. I'm right in saying, aren't I, that the STi8 performance figures are effectively unchanged from STi7?? (tho' one person has indicated that the torque comes on line at lower revs). If so, then any performance benefits can only be 'hidden' - (e.g. achievement of emissions levels/ reduced stress on engine parts). Perhaps someone would say exactly what benefits a bigger intercooler has and, crucially, confirm that a bigger intercooler not only demands more air (as one would intuitively expect), but also more air than can be provided by the existing scoop, which is itself already larger than those on STis 1 - 6.

Gimmick for US Market??? Will the 2.5 have this monster??

STi7: 0-100kmph 5.36s
STi8: 0-100kmph 5.15s

2 passengers and test equipment included when testing the vehicle.
We have cr#p fuel here in SA, so the UK / AUS figures should be
much better.

AFAIK intercoolers are same size as STi7. And the STi7 also came out with intercooler air splitter.

Anyone know when the rest of the world will be getting twin scroll turbos?

I read with amusement the comments about the new STI body shape and the hoodscoop design. Maybe it's because here in the U.S. we get the 2.5/300hp/DCCD that folks arn't too concerned about the big hoodscoop. I know the bug-eyed WRX was despised in the UK, but sold well here. My feeling is that the first generation Impreza, the bug-eyed car, and the new car all look like ****. You don't buy these cars for their styling, because Subaru can't, or at least hasn't so far, shown any skill whatsoever in designing a good looking car. What they do superbly is design practical, dynamic cars with excellent power and a wonderful chassie that are very reasonably priced compared to higher cost, more stylish, European cars. They are simply wonderful cars to drive, that also happen to be cheap.

If you look closely on the WRC cars the actual intake holes are blanked off with a sheet of carbon fibre anyway. The WRC cars do not use the top scoop at all, even for engine cooling.

The main cooling comes from all the holes (some larger than normal once Petter and Tommi have their way ) in the front bumper/bonnet.

So the bigger scoop is just for GpN and for road cars. I think it is too over the top and like my STi 7 just fine. But I would say that .....
