I believe that during the initial Gulf war, so many US soldiers brought their own "consumer spec" GPS receivers that the military turned off SA - thus they would be accurate to a few feet. They assumed that the Iraqi soldiers would not have quite the same access to such devices.

Of course since then, SA has been turned off permanently so that everyone can benefit

Interesting stuff from P130J - thanks mate.

SA was finally turned off sometime in 2000. I think this was because the State Department wanted guaranteed GPS signals for civil aviation traffic etc.
The DoD can still degrade GPS accuracy quite significantly on regional basis (rather than the old, global SA thing) so they can "turn off" civilian GPS accuracy over Iraq only whilst maintaining military accuracy there.

God - I'm turning into a GPS-bore...

P130J I notice you live in Bath and your post name, could that be C130J as in the new Hurcules? This *might* suggest you are in the RAF??

Just asking because I worked for 3 years on the CBT (computer based training) for that aircraft.

P130J also lists himself as a plane driver, a further clue to his occupation. Alway modest types these RAF flyboys

They run "P code" that is more accurate than the standard code that civilian users get. P code data is classified and has to be uploaded to the unit regularly hence the unit must have this facility
P code isn't classified itself -- it's Y-code that's classified (encrypted P-code). But the P-code is only transmitted on L2, and most civilian GPSs use only L1. Civilian GPS should be a lot more accurate since they turned off the SA, and accurate to a few metres. But it will never be as accurate as P-code military GPS, because without L2 you can't measure the ionospheric delay so you have to model it.

During the original Gulf war, the US equipped themselves with civilian GPS receivers and turned the SA off. I think the quote at the time was that they were counting on Saddam's "lack of access to mail order catalogues"
