STI7 trade in shock........
#33
Subaru shafted us UK300 owners on pricing. Love the car and was happy to pay the price at the time, £24995 plus £1600 for PPP then 12 months later they introduce the STI for less cash.
#34
Yeah, also was a bit miffed, bought my UK300 for £24995 in Oct 01, got offered £15250 for it when underwritten for an R32 golf.
Golf wasn't due to arrive until May, UK300 would be worth even less, therefore cancelled R32. Refuse to throw away £10k in just over a year.
Decided to keep UK300, do a few tweeks and keep it for a while longer until next year anyway. Might move back the way next time to hot hatch land, cars cost less, loose less money.
In the meantime I will still njoy my scoob.
Maybe we should all blow em up and cost IM a small fortune!! Mind you a few seem to blow anyway.
Cheers IM, keep up the shafting, I am enjoying it.

Pretty happy with Subaru myself , Subaru Japan that is . If you swap new cars it will cost, I got offered 6K less than I paid for my MY00 RA V-lim new a few months back car was just over 2 years old, the car had 1500-2000 worth of mods on but probably only worth 1000 on the second hand market. The good old days of import quotas have gone and we are in the age of euro and grey imports.

I picked up my STi7 Type UK on the 20th Nov2002, Went straight to Gatwick Subaru when I got a phone call from a friend saying that the STi8 was in the showroom and blew a gasket. I was more astounded when I was told that to change from the 7 to the 8 after only 8 weeks and 700 miles would cost me, my car and £6.5k, because, after all, yours is the old model now!
I would not have minded so much if, in Nov, I had not asked about the 2003 model and been told that the STi would not be out until June/July 2003.

When are you guys going to realise that you are the problem not
subaru, If you want to be vein enough to have the latest model all the time then you are obviously going to get shafted everytime you go into a showroom!
Just enjoy what youve got and stop moaning all the time and if you want to change, then change your bloody car, just dont post on here how much youve been ripped off! Its because of people like you guys who change every year that push all of the prices down a bit closer to the max power brigade!
I must admit if I could afford a STI8 then I would aswell!
But I wouldnt moan about it!

TaffyBoyo,
Most people on here are pi**ed off because of the drop in value of their Scoobs. One of the things that used to be really re-assuring about having a scoob is that it didn't depreciate like most other cars.
Now Subaru and IM have totally fu**ed everything up.
Everyone knows cars lose money, fact of life. Subarus never used to be as bad as they currently are.
I remember my first Scoob bought in new in 98 for £20006 kept it for 13 months and traded it in for a 99 Scoob for £19000. Those were the good old days.
Big Den, seen the STi8 last Sat at Nobles, it is not any better looking than bug eye, just different. Bonnet scoop is completely stanking though looks absolute pants. Subaru / IM obviously still haven't learned to listen to customers.

Not necessarily, Bogie. The US Market, as OldnSlow has pointed out, is much bigger than the European, Subaru are trying to get in, and bugeye went down well there...... And I don't think we really know what the Jap Domestic Market thought, do we????

One of the reasons you are offered crap money is because the amount of cars of a specific model e.g. sti 7, that are comming on to the 2nd hand market at the same time (when a new model arrives)
as for the 3 grand saving subaru introduced on the MY02 was a bit rude just before the new one came out but it not a shock that cars lose value when a new model arrives anyway!
Please just enjoy the fantastic cars that we are fortunate enough
to own! trade it/ dont trade it ,you pays your money!

Buy brand new and you're gonna lose big-time no matter what you buy. OK some cars are worse than others but the worst time is buying within a year of a newer model coming out.
Personally I'd much prefer to buy cars a year old, they're usually good as new anyway (if looked after), have 2 years warranty left nowadays, and save you a fortune on the new price. Which also means you don't take anywhere near as bad a hit when it comes to resale cos the worst depreciation has already taken place to your advantage.

Dave T-S, excuse me, but why are you getting out of Subaru ownership? Do you just fancy a change? Can't argue with that, but interested as to why. I'm sure you'll do better in the TVR Karting Club, so prolly a smart move
Don't tell me you've given up track days (again). Would love to lap your TVR!!!
I've noticed you're not posting as much these days, which is a shame.
Cheers mate,
Richard.

Taking the example from the beginning of the thread. The guy has lost 8K but ....
If you paid £26K for an STi7 and then after a year you swapped to an STi8 and they have put the STi8 upto 28K and gave you 20K for your STi7 then you are still looking at 8K to swap. The tax alone on a 26K car is over 4K and you are unlikely to see that again.

I took a Sti8 out for a test drive on Saturday, have to admit the handling was better then my UK300 but the Performance didn't seem any better. To be fair it's still new so obviously the engines still tight but there's no way I could justify spending another 8 grand or so just for the latest model. My finance is up next summer so I'll probably trade in for the STI7 and get ppp with the money I'll save. That is of course unless they bring out the 2.5-3 litre version.

Hi Richard
A bit bored with the whole Subaru thing, basically
The cars are down at the £5k end now, and that attracts the great unwashed, which gives the image a bad name
Now we are commuting together again one of the STi's sits in the garage all week and does nothing, which is a bit of a waste. Whatever happens we will sell Carolyn's, buy a 2.0 Focus to use as a hack, and that can sit in the station car park all day and get the door dings instead!
Re the TVR, not impressed with the way we are being treated by the local dealer ("if you buy a car from another dealer I don't want to do any warranty work on it") so might tell them to stick it anyway. Besides, I wrote a moaning email to Peter Wheeler and the dealer rang me and said he was going to give us our deposit back - i've made an impression there
Noble M12 looks ok though
Re karting, you at Rye House on 15/2? If so, watch your back bumper ya cheeky beggar
Re not posting on Scoobynet much - afraid it's full of garbage these days, and haven't got the time or inclination to sort out the minority of decent posts!

I've now had an extensive email exchange with IM on this, and basically they do not give a monkeys.
My gripe is not the pricing of the MY03 STi, but the pricing of the MY02 STi - clearly it was overpriced if they could reduce it just a few months later, and IM were thus taking people for a ride - stiff the market for whatever they could, after all it would look cheap compared to the P1/UK300.
This is be borne out by the official SMMT registration stats that show Subaru registrations dropped 16.28% for the year to November 2002. Shortly after they reduced the WRX by £3k to get shot of the old stocks before the MY03 lower pricing was announced.
If you have any concerns on this, fire them at Sam Burton, the Managing Director of IM at sburton@imgroup.co.uk and copy it to Ed Swatman the Chief Executive Officer at eswatman@imgroup.co.uk - since they say mine is the only complaint I am sure they would love to hear from you!

I knew this would happen, hence me keeping the car for 5 years rather than 3. If the rumours are correct ( ) then 2007 will see a 3 litre STI with 350Bhp and a new styling by the Alfa guy. Since my 5 years is up in 2007 then the MY07 STI will be a natural successor. Judging on past values my car would still be worth in around 7-8K then, which will make it cheaper to buy than my current one.
I've been in an STI 8 and to be honest, apart from a smaller wheel theres negligable difference between it and an STI-7. I don't mind the bug eye look and I prefer the seats and interior of the 7 So all this talk of residuals is for me, a moot point. The only reason to change is if you can't stand the bugeye looks and can put up with the new STI's scoop.
However I can see how people who want to change now are miffed, but to be honest change a car within a year and you're going to lose loads(A few cars excepting)

Neil exactly the same decision. had mine for just over 2 years and doen about 9K in it. Normally by this time it would have gone but its a cracking car and spent time and effort getting it how I want it. Dont really want to start from scratch and fork out a fortuen getting it back to the way I want it, so decided to keep it and see what happens. If Subaru lift their game and give us a barnstormer model then I will be first on the list. Until then or I get bored with the RA it looks like I will be only looking at Porsches and TVRs but if the right tempting deal appears then bye bye scooby doo.

Dave T-S, you say "The cars are down at the £5k end now, and that attracts the great unwashed, which gives the image a bad name". I think the same can be said for BMW M3's, Audi Quattros, Porkers and dare I say it TVR's. Can you really put up with the terrible TVR build quality, I know I couldn't after seeing the motorshow examples (which I thought would have been the best).
If you do stray from Subaru how will your dealer feed his family now, eh?

Actually, I think I am to blame. Most of the car change decisions in the T-S household are taken by me.....and I'm bored and want some fun, just not 100% sure what to change to

I don't think there's any reason to complain to IM or Watchdog. Your head should be complaining to your heart for being misled. If MY02 pricing was too high, all Joe Public had to do was to take his custom elsewhere - IM would have had to reduce prices if STI sales were non-existant. But car manufacturers feed off those who have to have the latest model and then reduce prices to maintain steady demand later on. As for whether you stick with an STI 7 or trade in for an 8, I bought an STI3 5 years ago and it has cost me 2.5k each year/10,000 miles I have owned it. And its quicker and has more character than the 7 and 8 too, so what incentive is there to change? If anybody is fed up with their 7, maybe they should consider a version 5 or 6, but then that's another debate entirely!

I'm staggered people are complaining about car prices dropping and not being aware of new models.
This is not an issue exlusive to Subaru.
The cult following of the car meant huge numbers flooding into the country and scarcity no longer commanded a premium and held prices high. its simple supply and demand and not hard to grasp.
On the other hand i know where you are coming from as I bought a fully specced MY00 and took delivery not long before the new model was launched. My dealer , lavender Hill, made me aware of the possibility of a new model whcih a good dealer should. Thats said it didn;t sway my decision ad although I;ve lost a load of cash the happiness the car has given me was well worth it.
If you think of a car as an investment it will always **** you off as cars are not worth what they were a few years ago and we have ourselves, the consumer to thank for that.

I don't think it was actually necessary to tell us that as we all know who wears the trousers in Standing Towers.
Go on, get the Tuscan S (or T-S for short. Eh! Wait a minute...) and stick him in the diesel focus. He's getting on a bit now and the trevor might be a bit much for his ticker

I tend agree with Carolyn T-s (always agree with women )The Sti7 PPP seems a bit slow but where do you find a replacement with simular costs, fun and Power................ not many places Mini cooper powerfull fun but small. Evo great but far more expensive ...........then £40K plus models (£48-50K for for a Nobel

Dave Thornton, I echo your thoughts. I have a MY00 and I've personalised it a bit to the point that it's just right. I can find no incentive to change at this time, nothing else makes me want to swap it as the alternatives all have something missing or are too expensive.
I've put too much time and effort into my car and I guess it'll take something very special to make me want to do it again.

I do actually feel sorry for Subaru dealers! Look at where all the money goes, and it isn't in owners or dealers pockets, but IM's. Despite falling registrations, they still manage to milk the product for all its worth.
This reminds me of the Octav Botnar/Nissan UK issue in the 1980's, and the sooner FHI/SJ replace the current UK setup with their own distribution network, the better for dealers and owners.
