Pops/Bangs on full-decat....normal?
#34
Back to the original question.........I thought this was just a side effect of having a full de-cat. Fuel exploding in the hot exhaust pipe causing the pops and bangs, you hear it on lift off as unburnt fuel gets dumped into exhaust. I hear the occasional pop on my cat back system......Totally normal I thought

SB,
At the Autosport Motorsport show I visited the Link stand and was shown a knocklink sensor in the form of a gauge and looked just like a boost gauge. I thought it was rather cool looking. As knock becomes more detectable the needle obviously moves around but the backlight on the dial goes from green to blue to red. Cool . Speak to BR Developments I think they will know about it.

I'd appreciate some technical input to help answers some questions I have (thinking about de-cat up and down pipes to go with my PPP kit).
Why should a knocklink type unit be needed whejn running full de-cat. Are there side effects that I should be considering with this modification (I do about 24000 miles a year in my Scooby - although only had it since Nov 02 and done 4500 mile so far). Will high milage be a problem with full de-cats?
Thanks.
Richard.

Don't see the problem with decats on non-STis/P1s. But standard engines do go, if I had any turbo petrol engine standard or modified car I would fit a knocklink or similar knowing what I know now.

Is the concensus then that the standard knock senor and ECU control of it is not sufficient when the exhaust is upgraded to free-flowing and no cats?
But is detonation/knocking not usually present under high-load and low rev's scenarios, can driving differently help? In my mind I would have thought free-flowing would have help the ignition system and engine generally run free'er and with less restriction.
Popping and banging on throttle lift-off is not the same as detonation is it? This is unburnt fuel in the exhaust not in the conbustion chanbers although I guess any not in the exhaust could be in the chambers and lighting on compression stroke not anything else...
Don't think I understand. Help please? Opinions from people running de-cat (and PPP or similar) with or without problems please!

The reason is simple, if the wind blows the wrong way or Scooby is in a bad mood for some reason it just doesn't bother correcting or worrying about knock!
You have to be joking!!! Why does it do that???!

Kenny,
I think the ECU uses women's logic to work out knock correction; seems like it just decides what to do by the moood it's in.
The slightest of-the-cuff comment and it'll fly off the handle with no warning. And never let it here you say it's got a fat @rse especially any bug-eye owners out there.

Kenny,
Here's another solution to your cosmetic concerns about the knocklink....
DIY MODS
Check the rest of the page too - he's done some good stuff...
Has anyone got a price for the new dial type knock link yet ??
