PSLewis. With you all the way on this one. My observations again:

The government has already borrowed up to its neck. As we possibly enter a full recession he Gordon will be able to raise less in tax. Less in tax means less to spend. If the Firefighters get there money the queue behind them will be HUGE.

For example I have heard firemen on the radio refer to all those rich city people. Interestingly Citigroup are expected to lay of 10 top equity research analysts next week. Yep they'll get huge pay offs. Between them they are reputed to earn £25 million per year. Yep a huge amount of money. But think for a moment..... thats £10 million less in income tax. £15 million less sloshing around the economy in terms of VAT etc.

The job is not that dangerous. When was the last time you heard of a fireman dieing on duty?? I would suspect the drive to work is more risky.

So they can't afford to live in London near their fire stations. Yep I can't afford to live in London either. So I get a 3 hour daily commute and a 12 hour day in the office. I get to travel in rush hour though both ways every day.

They get a final salary pension scheme (I know they have to contribute). My pension has halved in the last couple of years.

On a final note 11% over 2 years is a good deal. At my Bank we were told that because of the redundancies last Friday pay rises would be frozen this year and to be thankful we had a job.

All that said the Firemen do an excellent job, I just personally believe that their salaries with the 11% are pitched about right.

Well said Dave - a voice of reason.

City folk earn a fortune, true, BUT they (generally) make a fortune for their banks. Firemen make no money at all, in fact - they make NOTHING.

They put out fires, rescue children from burning buildings, get cats down from trees, cut people out of cars, get women all over them, HAD a good image with the public (gone now sadly!).

So, they do a valuable job that pays £21,000 a year. They add to that quite significantly by having other jobs that they do while we pay them for sitting around playing pool, playstations or polishing their helmets.

AND 40 others would like to do EACH of their jobs!! I say, sack the ones that are there and hire those who actually WANT to do the job!! The terms and conditions are MOST acceptable to them!!

The relevance of my question is that over the past few years you have had raises of around 5% per year. I wonder if firemen, and many others have had such high raises every year.
If we do enter a recession, then we have only the governemnt to blame. The amout of money tehy wastes jetting around the world, and the amount of money Tony wastes licking Bush's ******* is why we are in so much debt. That along with the governments own massive pay rises every year, their free cars and houses that we, the taxpayers all pay for. If the members of government were to back off with their spending, then there would be so much more money for the important things, like Schools, NHS, Transport etc, all of which are probably in the worst state they have ever been for many many years. The government are happy to squander money on many things ( Millenium Dome for one small example ) yet when it comes to the important things, they really havent got a clue.
The live in their own little millionare world, and have no grasp on reality.
We see programs on TV all the time now aout people swapping lives...I wonder how Tony, or his FAT **** of a mate would cope living in the real world for a month or 2, actually having to work for a living. I dont think they would manage too well.
The governemnt seems like it will force their will onto the people, yet again, this is no Democracy, more like a dictatorship.
It really is a matter of time before it turns sour for them. I can see all the unions getting together soon, and really showing the government what a walkout/demonstration really is.
Interest rates may be low, but the taxes etc on everything else, make the cost of living a bloody fortune. Anything that is cheap at present, the government also have lined up for a new tax..

Suppose it is asking a bit much.. But Labour are still tossers with no concept of the real world, where they create laws to suit themselves, and to make them money. And when they make money...It is us they take the money from.

Yet another unsubstantiated statement Whenever you are queried on the source of your information, you play "teflon shoulders" and pass it on. When someone provides facts to contradict your stance, you simply ignore them. You make personal insults (such as "thickos like you") to people you have never met.

Have you ever though of getting a job as a politician??

Boomer does the same as he says I do - states things with NO back-up WHATSOEVER!! So? Boomer where is your evidence that each and every firemans job is NOT oversubscibe??

The reason you are THICK is that you just come back and ask for my sources WITHOUT offering your opposite fact??!! So, I dont have to meet you to calculate that you are none too bright are you??

MUch as it hurts like hell, i actually have to agree with Pete on his original post....

Whether the jobs risky or not is not the issue. They know the risks they are going to take each day, they knew what the money was when they took the job. So they have absolutely no moral right to strike and put lives at risk - how many people must die before they're happy?

The fact is that they work short hours, many have second jobs and they receive a blinding final salary pension.

Plus as much sex as they want, obviously

Shame Maggie went mad, she'd break a Wuss like Gilchrist in no time.

I wouldn't call 42 hours a week basic short.
What is the issue with second jobs? They only do it because their pay is poor. I know teachers who do bar work but I don't see anyone moaning about them.
The starting salary in my opinion if fine, but you do not get pay increments like most jobs. A firefighter with 4 years in is on exactly the same salary as someone with 14 years.
A police officer is on roughly the same starting salary as a firefighter but after 10 years service it has increased by £8,000.
Promotion doesn't bring in much more pay either, and the responsibility easily outweighs it.
The pension is good. But you do pay for it. 11% of your pay packet goes towards it.

Angry

ur wage does go up... the guy with 14 years experience isnt earning the same as he did 14 years ago...

i dont see the teachers striking. and besides - teachers striking doesnt KILL someone

promotions can give u 10 to 15k more...
all promotions mean more responsibility - thats life...
i could stay a software engineer for the rest of my career... but i wouldnt get the increases in salary... hence why i am now a senior software engineer in charge of getting projects done on time and managing time, tasks and people...

comes down to the fact that firemen striking is unethical and morally wrong

i dont know one person personally who is not a fireman and who supports their STRIKE.

i have nothing against firemen - i have one as a friend

i hate strikes... imagine if the army went on strike coz they had to go to war on 15k...

as for how much they are worth paid?
i am worth more than i get, my dad is worth more than he gets, my mum is worth more than she gets, my sister is worth more than shes gets, my granny should get a decent pension... and on and on and on...

42 Hours a week short?? - ITS WHAT WE ALL DO!! 1 hour for lunch each day = 37 ... STANDARD I would say? The point is, actually, that they only have to work for 5% of the time they are being paid Yes, from the news BUT lets be generous and say its actually TWICE that? - means they work for 10% of their time!!! thats 3.7 hours a week, round it up to 4hours - see how generous I can be?? Thats £100 an HOUR!!! AND THEY BL00DY MOAN???

I visited my Fire Station this afternoon, they were all outside with their burner, I told them that I didnt agree with their claim and did they realise that I had been stood here for 20 minutes and NOT HEARD ONE HORN of support????? They know, they realise they will lose, they cannot do anything about it - I have never seen such a demoralised bunch of people - the FBU convinced them they could get 40%, so they voted for a strike campaign - sure in the knowledge that the Gov. would pay - they truly want it to end, they would take 4% and wind the clock back!! They dont really want to change their conditions - FOR ANY AMOUNT!!

So, I say - offer 4% to the grassv roots - 80% will take it, leave them with their cosy conditions. The rest will crumble into line.

I couldnt believe how cheated they felt by the FBU!!

Oh, yes, Diablo - if you didnt care about what I thought of you you wouldn't post TWICE would you?? And YES, I most certainly WOULD call you a ******* to your face - if you annoyed me as you do on here!! - which you WOULDN'T if you saw me!! anyway, clever dick - what makes you think I am NOT 72 and a cantackerous old git??? Any evidence?
