Perhaps it's all a bit simpler than this. We don't blaspheme (or use any other strong language) because it offends *us* - we do it because it offends *others*.

Growing up, when you said a naughty word, didn't your parents tell you off? And wasn't the next thing you did to go and impress all of your mates by saying it over and over?

Swearing exists to communicate strong emotion to other people, so religious swearing works *best* in the presence of religious people.

I feel Cartman put it best with.

"Shut your f**kin face uncle f**ker"

I mean what damage can a word do?
heres some really dangerous words
"Bombs away"
"God bless america"
"Subaru 8 Vs Evo 7"

So when doing my cabinets (I'm STILL waiting! ) and this Jesus fella whacks his thumb with a hammer, what does he exclaim? Would he offend himself?

Must be lack of fear.

"May God strike me down if I'm lying", and "I swear on this Bible to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God".

Don't know anyone that's been struck down and look how many people lie under oath. Doesn't mean much to most (?) people anymore.
