To be Someone
To be someone must be a wonderful thing,
A famous footballer a rock singer,
Or a big film star, yes I think I would like that.
To be rich and have lots of fans
Have lots of girls to proove that I'm a man
And be No. 1 - and liked by everyone.
Getting drugged up with my trendy friends
They really dig me and I dig them
And the bread I spend - is like my fame - it's quickly diminished
And there's no more swimming in a guitar shaped pool
No more reporters at my beck and call
No more cocaine, now it's only ground chalk
No more taxis now we'll have to walk
But didn't we have a nice time -
Didn't we have a nice time
Oh wasn't it such a fine time
I realize I should have stuck to my guns
Instead **** out to be one of the ******* sons
And lose myself - I know it was wrong - but it's cost me a lot
And there's no more drinking when the club shuts down,
I'm out on my **** with the rest of the clowns
It's really frightening without a bodyguard
So I stay confined to my lonely room

but what was brian may doing at 18? was his guitar playing talent any better than the singing talent of some of the kids on idol?
Yes lots better at eighteen Brian amazed people with the way he could play guitar solos on his home made guitar that the people on the original record could not play themselves and had to play slowly then speed up later. One of jimi Hendrix's teachers believed that he was being physcologically scarred by not having a guitar such was his need to play he slept with his guitar while he was in the army. This was the passion and dedication displayed by real musical talents.
Real talent is about creativity and an uncompromising attitude that includes no concessions to comercialism. Pop idol is just a load of third rate back up singers who look nice but can't even sing very well I've heard better singers working in music shops around the world but the fact is looks and image count for more than talent.
Will and gareth will have made a few quid because their sales were huge but taking into account publicity costs production costs and paying publishing rights to the writers of the songs they sing combined with the first class air fares aqround the world, limos etc the money will not be all that great. The next lot girls aloud and one true voice will be lucky to walk with a hundred grand each and thats assuming they release more hit singles and an album each. When it comes down to it even the likes of all saints who had two hit albums and lots of hit singles ended up being almost brassic and unable to pay the mortgage. And these are the ones who 'make it'

Paul Weller can't sing worth a sh*te, but he has "talent"
A talent to write songs and entertain.
Robbie Williams can't sing worth a sh*te either, but he has "talent"
A talent to be a brilliant entertainer. Oh, and a talent to make a shedload of cash, and for that he deserves respect.
I'm with Tiggs on this one.
What Popstars the Rivals has demonstrated to me is that BOTH Waterman and Walshe (sp?) haven't got a fecking clue. Waterman may be the Old man of Pop but Walshe is not far behind.
But be honest, could anyone realistically say that any of Girls Aloud could really sing, in a technical sense? Sound of the underground was utter cr@p live. The Boys song was sung better (the boys had better voices (talent?))IMO but the song was sh*te for the market at which it was aimed.
Is it any wonder?

Robbie Williams has charisma (allegedly) and a good team of people to create an image for him as well as a factor about him that makes girls like him this is not the same as talent.

Mr E,
I admire Wellers talent and listen to his songs, but he does not have a good voice technically.
Certainly can't sing any better than Robbie Williams.
Roger Daltry is another one.

Some old mates of mine won a "****" one year (won't say who, I'm sure you can work it out). They were seriously pi$$ed off that they had to attend to be presented with it because they were afraid that it would wreck their 'street cred'.
But... the record company insisted they attend. It was made even worse when they realised the said "****" was to be presented by none other than fat assed Furgie herself. They went through with it but refused to shake her hand, or whatever you're expected to do, or make any kind of speech Caused a bit of a stir at the time
But that's how they are seen in the business by 'real' artists. An embarrassing joke that can seriously **** up your 'image'
UB.
BTW I hope Norah Jones wins one as she it a genuine talent, but I bet she doesn't
