Compact disc, floppy disk; disk is short for diskette in the latter case.

Actually in the UK we used to spell it 'disk' before the French influenced us.

Slightly off topic but does anyone remember a crazy teaching technique a number of years back that they tried to introduce that encouraged "spelling as it sounds" or have I dreamt it??

www.freespeling.com
A quick glance at the spelings (sic) on that site will show you why it's such a crap idea

"Freespel for comprehension, clarity and cumfort"

Thumbs down

Anything spelt the american way really annoys me IMO...As pointed out earlier, centre is the correct way and as a scooby centRE pipe is VERY popular on here, please get it right!!

Btw have you noticed its the younger members on here who spell it wrong. Its nice to know our schools are teaching the youth of today properly.

Nowt wrong with a few mispelled words, there's probably a few in here.
BUT...
It only takes a few seconds to proof read the post, before hitting the submit button.
Some posts just don't make ANY sense.
Sort it out peeps.

Hope this one does.

with english being such a ba$tardised language do you wonder why it is so difficult for people to learn as a second language. think of all the words that sound the same but are spelt differently (homophones or homonym IIRC)

allowed, aloud
ate, eight
bald, balled, bawled
band, banned
bridal, bridle
their, there, they're
weather, wether, whether
vain, vane, vein

hard enough for people who use english as their native language

cheers

big sinky

I know what you mean there... I almost feel guilty teaching my g/f's kid English. He (quite reasonably) guesses how to spell a word and he's often wrong.

planky,
Ded rite!!!
I was just laughing inwardly at the irony of people who criticise the grammar and spelling of others and get it wrong themselves.

Break Discs - 3 OFF - won more to get OFF B4 I cell them?

Never really understood the OFF thing but it appears to be widely used when describing a number of individual items in a batch. Not entirely convinced that OF is the correct form either.

p.s. - I know/no this sentance/sentence doesn't/does not contain correct grammer/grammar but I dropped English/english the first chance that/which I got.

I brought/bought.
Was just about to add that myself. 90% of people I speak to don't get that right. "I went out and brought myself xyz" when it should be "bought myself".

The number of people who get the use of 'was' and 'were' when speaking is quite high - they get the singular and plural forms completely mixed up, especially with the word 'you', which takes the plural form.

Easy rule of thumb to remember that one...

To buy - I bought - no r
To bring - I brought - an r in both.
