This is not a dig at people who aren't good at English. Rather, it's a chance for them to find out how to use some words properly.
Can't you read my initial statement?

It's more for the benefit for those that can't use English properly and will help them a great deal in life. If you can't use the language properly people will come to the (often correct) conclusion that you are stupid.

Question

Craig, do you honestly believe in the comments of your first post? Or was it just a Devil's Advocate, "take the other side" post?

CraigH - if everyone takes note and learns the language of the nation then there'll be nothing to criticise.

Using better English will also mean that people will understand you better and make life more pleasant and will open doors etc.

Drac,

Rather, it's a chance for them to find out how to use some words properly. They can then make some sense when posting posting on SN
How about grammar as well?

Oh that'd be an unusual stance for Craig. See the remaining diet thread for details.

GaryK - One step at a time

I'm not expecting us to all be English degree standard, but just to improve the VERY BASICS that many people don't seem to know. This is almost primary school stuff really.

Not necessarily about spelling or grammar but trying to help people use the correct words! (e.g. brake and break mis-uses are not typos but not knowing the meaning of words!)

Edited because even when I get it wrong, I rectify it.

I fail to see how this thread can be of help to anyone! Do you really think anyone is going to refer to this before posting?
Why deem that everyone on Scoobynet should be grammatically correct. It's just a BBS - why isn't it acceptable to just use colloquials?

Does seem a bit patronising, as it does seem to mock, or is this the start of another flame war?

Red,

Agree dont think it's too important, drac, you have to be careful you could be pointing errors out to someone that has dyslexia and it may not be taken in the spirit it was intended. Just a thought. Now how about some maths help!

Well I now KNOW the difference between it's and its and can use the correct form from now on. I'm sure many other people are reading and thinking 'ah, that's how it should be done'.

Use it if you want, ignore it if you want. Up to the reader. It's the other threads where people criticise others English, this 'should' tell us how it should be done should we want to know.

TurboKitty,

I take the side that I agree on or believe. I'm not afraid to say what I feel or think. That doesn't make me a Devils Advocate. If I wanted to be Devils Advocate my posts would be worded accordingly.

I'm not a sheep who cannot think for myself or will blindly follow others opinions, in some cases just because they're "friends".

I think you have an issue with people disagreeing with you and tend to miss major points to posts because of it. That's not an insult just an observation.

GaryK - People with dyslexia get the spelling wrong as the letters appear in the wrong place, as different letters etc. They still use the correct words, just spelt incorrectly. This thread was about using the CORRECT word, not about spelling them correctly (although useful if you do!). Although the threads all go in funny directions TBH but can't domuch about that.

Ah ok, i see.

But i don't think this is a case of superiority complexes, at least it isn't to me in my mind. I just find it frustrating to read posts in which there are glaring errors. Maybe it's me (and some others), but i don't understand why people don't bother with their native language, it seems such a shame to me, that's all...

LOL

I've said it many times before on threads similar to this, that the capitalisation of the letter i is the one rule of English to which i take personal umbrage!! Never has anyone convinced me why we should do this, and until they do, i'll continue with my little "i"s. Thank you!

Typos are one thing (we all make them).

Even spelling things wrong -- OK, we can't look everything up before we post.

But using the wrong words entirely is plain ignorance. Surely if someone uses "they're" instead of "their" on the BBS, they'll do it all the time?

I personally have no problem with people using colloquialisms (I don't even know if I've spelt that right ). But this 'text speak' (e.g. extensive use of 'u' instead of 'you', and no punctuation or capital letters whatsoever) I find nearly impossible to read. It's just laziness on the poster's part, and because of that they might miss out on some decent responses. IMHO, of course

There other types of dyslexia, such as being unable to speak properly because the brain puts ou words quicker than the mouth being able to vocalise them, so that the person appears to trip up on their speech because they're trying to say the latest word but haven't got round to saying the last one...

Some people do not have the ability to be able to spell correctly. So what? What does it matter? As long as they are understood, it's irrelevant!

I know extremely clever people, very brainy people, they can't spell - but do they care? No, of course not!! Nor should we take 'umbrage' or feel 'frustrated' about it - there are more important things in life to worry whether 'X' has used capitals or dotted the i's, or even bothered with punctuation!!!!

Question

Lynne, so why did you bother to spell everything correctly and use correct grammar if it's "irrelevant"???

Thumbs down

Language was developed to enable us to communicate. It has a set of rules to follow so that we're all singing off the same hymn sheet. If you spell however you fancy, then you risk not being understood. Why do you think there are two words 'bear' and 'bare' -- it's not because someone thought they'd have a laugh, it's because then you can understand what someone means.

There are still some that are ambiguous though -- sometimes I find it difficult from context to determine if the writer means 'read' (in the present sense) or 'read' (in the past sense).

If you want to continue on your chosen course, I suggest you read www.freespeling.com. Spelling things wrongly can be a nightmare with URLs, and also when coders spell variable names wrongly

The point is that, in many cases, they are NOT understood.

No point in having ideas if you can't communicate them properly, is there?

Would you write a book in which everything was spelled wrongly? Would you send out wedding invitations with spelling mistakes in them? I think not

This from the person who took umbrage at someone calling themselves dyslexic in chat one night.

I remember that night very well, as you took to insulting my friend as well when she stuck up for the person in question.

Excuse me! Why did you think it was a bother? It comes naturally! If I make a grammatical mistake or spelling error erroneously - so what? I don't lose sleep over it, nor do I care that people may have noticed it, but I certainly would not expect someone to pick me up on it. So don't start 'pedantic mode' with me
