Neet - No

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((( special hug for Neet ))))))))))))))))))))))

OK, there was a wee bit of yank in that feel good thing, but it's really a 'me' thing, not a yank thing. I just want everyone to get along.

Crikey, I sound like a bloody hippy! Damn, must stop that

TBH I think TelBoy has hit the nail on the head (even though I disagree with his moon landings theories ). I'm no traditionalist (for a start, I'm 29) but the standard of education in this country is now p1ss poor. We seem to be churning out kids who can't read, write or add up
If you can't manage those basic skills, you're stuffed from the start. English is the language of the arts (in this country, anyway) and maths is the language of the sciences.

Markus says he can't spell, but his general grammar and layout of text is pretty good IMHO. I reckon if he was writing a formal document and he was using a dictionary he'd get it pretty much perfect. I'm guessing, but I reckon his maths is probably a lot better than he thinks. Half the battle with either is knowing you've got it wrong....

Carl,

If you have to read my post very slowly to understand then you're not a very good reader and have poor perception and analytical skills

Telboy,

Regarding general standards you are spot on, but that's a much bigger picture and will never change. Communities develop their own slang which eventually travels on and around the country.

It's easy to look down on people (without realising it) with poor lingual or grammatical skills but it doesn't mean their cognitive ability is any lower than anyone elses.

If we all spoke English or any other native language perfectly, it would be a weird and unvaried place wouldn't it?

Carl - umm, assume you are being humorous (**** the spelling) if not, then, well, do I care? not really.
Er, no. I was just pointing out that your occasional mis-spelt word and lack of capitalization made little or no difference to the readability of your text.

Had you written it all in 'txt spk' then it would be a different matter

Agreed. I was in a shop just t'other day and I bought items totalling £3.21. I gave the assistant £5.21 in order to get a straight £2 back.

Could she work this out? Nooooo.... Had to call over the manager who looked most chagrined at the stupidity of the clerk...

On the contrary, because I'm a good reader () I'm already expecting the next word as I'm reading the current one -- your post grates because the words don't look like what I'm expecting.

Let's get this clear -- it's not all of your posts, Craig, just the one where you wrote:
wiv regrds 2 not being abel 2 unerstand if not written proper thas not exatly trew is it?
I had a Polish lecturer once, and it was a nightmare copying notes off the board because you assumed that a word would come and he'd put a completely different one up. It wasn't that there was anything wrong with his English, it just seemed that the way he wrote was 90 degrees out of phase with everyone else

no i don't think you're missing the point
That "i" should be a capital if we're being pedantic about grammar & spelling

No, i know. In fact i hand-write all "i"s with a capital out of force of habit; it's just when typing that it goes out of the window. Capital letters in the middle of sentences belong in German (and i'm sure other languages too), but not in English imho, with the exception of proper nouns, of which "i" is not one!!

I agree 100%. I feel it is an inditement on the british education system that we can't even speak and write our own native language never mind another european language. most other european countries have english as a second or even third language.

cheer

FFS Dracoro was only dishing out a bit of harmless information. Why is everybody so het-up on flaming someone at the first opportunity. This BBS does make me wonder sometimes!!! Take a chill pill people.

I would like to state I am NOT having a go at anyone here, ok, just pointing out the 'why' factor

prodriva,
Drac may well have been providing information, but the point is some people do correct others, and some people do not like this at all, and thus it causes friction.

I'm not to bothered about it to be honest, I'm crap and I know I am lol

(((((((((( hands out big chill pill ))))))))))))))
