I'm really not that fussed about other people's English but I always try to make an effort when posting on here.

The reason for this is that when I open a post which is full of blatant spelling and gramatical errors, I just can't be arsed to read it as it's just too much effort to try and decifer it all! It makes my head hurt!

I wasn't going to reply to this thread but since I have I might as well get this off my chest too.... For some reason it really winds me up when my people (well actually, my girlfriend!) texts me and says something like "You could of met me" because this should of course be "You could have met me", don't know why this annoys me but it just does! The wierd thing is I say "should of" and "could of", but I'm really saying in my head "should've" and "could've"!

I guess I'm just one sad, pedantic b@stard!

Hello peepole, i have no problems with my English, i just can't spell or type. Am I truely beyond any glimmer of hope? Would it be worth me giving up puncuation as well?

"offense" instead of the correct form - OFFENCE!
"defense" instead of the correct form - DEFENCE!

Oh - and while I'm on the subject of annoying Americanisms and laziness - "program" when it refers to something on television.

It's "program" for a computer program and "programme" for anything on television.

Actually it's both.
It's a "Driving Licence", but the DVLA license you to drive. I always remember it by thinking of 'advice' and 'advise'.

But you have to laugh, it's "desperate", whereas it's "separate".

If you invented English today, you'd make it a damn site (not sight!) easier than it presently (currently?) is!!

I think you mean 'council' and 'counsel'
Doesn't usually cause a problem, until someone tells you they're a councillor/counsellor.

Compliment and complement are also a problem (former is when you say something nice, latter is when something goes well with something else). I always wonder what those "With Compliments" slips actually mean - is it like sending a slip saying "By the way, you've got a nice ***"?

carl, no, i was referring to councel as a mis-spelt version of counsel, which i often seem to see.
