his bones should grow ok, it's the stress and strain he is putting on his underdeveloped tendons and cartiledge that could lead to long term damage.
Why doesn't he try training lighter for higher repetitions and sets.

the reason behind what I said is that if you add his combined weight together from training lighter and for a greater amount of sets is that in total he will be shifting more poundage than if he does less sets with a heavy weight.
It is after all about overloading the muscle.
I do know people who train like this and compete at a good level.
just a thought.
