TK,
Im trying to be humorous about steriotypical gym nerds in the gym I train at.

These types of people Im talking about always seem to carry waterbottles with them, with some healthy slogan or brand name plastered on it.

Its not needed in my gym,as there are water fountains everywhere.

spent 10 years as a gym instructor and got to say the 30 something bloke who chats to the 19 year old blonde is still the funniest- esp when he changes his workout to make sure he uses the machine next to her!

T

(although i once got on the stepper thinking someone was due in for their CV workout- had to do 3hrs on it before she turned up!)

ahhh that old trick

Last time i made a vague effort at going to my heinously overpriced gym, there was some famous model in there on the excersise bike thingies. i got on the one next to her, and darent get off before her (mostly cos i was transixed by her thighs)

45 mins later when she finally got off, i crawled to the bar in agony!, took me 3 pints to recover, not been back since...

Yoza, I know the sort of people you are talking about. There were quite a lot of them clogging up the gym in January, but oddly the number seems to have dropped somewhat now. Don't tar all water bottle carriers with the same brush though, because in my case it doesn't mean I train any less hard.

There's are water fountains in the gym I use too, but that's not much use, since I can't go 20 minutes on a treadmill or bike without water. I sweat like a very sweaty thing, a lovely trait for a female and one which I inherited from my dad - thanks dad. It means I tend to dehydrate really fast.

I get through an absolute minimum of a litre of water in a 2 hour gym session and wouldn't be able to finish without it.

Oh, and don't forget that for blokes, t-shirts must be skin-tight and must show off at least one tattoo around the upper arm. It is also essential when using the free weights, to clink them together as often as you can to ensure that as many people as possible are looking at you. For women, all clothes must be skin-tight, outline of thong must be visible, top must be cropped to show off tattoo at base of spine, hair and make-up must be perfect and you must be able to 'train' for at least half an hour without producing so much as a bead of sweat...

I have *never* understood women that wear make-up to the gym!

I refuse to pay silly money for a place I go to sweat and vomit! Most of the gyms around here are £80+ per month for a single membership and IMO the facilities don't make them worth that. I used to belong to David Lloyd in Raynes Park, which was around £60 a month, but I now use the local sports centre. I started going there as part of a fitness scheme run in conjuntion with my GP's surgery, to give me a bit of support when I first started trying to lose weight. Now the programme is finished, I have joined. It's not plush, but it has all the kit I need and I don't go there to pose, so it's not an issue. It's still £40 a month though. That includes access to the gym, the pools, the health suite and most of the classes.

Yoza, where I go there are two gyms. One is a bodybuilder's gym and the other is the one that I use, which is more geared to fitness types than those who want to build muscles. I don't know how the guys in the bodybuilders gym behave 'cos it's way scary in there and I don't go in there, but trust me, anyone showing off tattoos and banging weights together in the gym I use is a poser - the perfect hair and designer gear type, y'know? If they were serious about lifting, they'd be using the other gym. The reasons they don't use that gym are that there are no women in there to pose in front of and they'd look fapping silly next to all the blokes taking it seriously.

I'm a member of the Holiday Inn in Sutton. Was 150 to join I think (two years ago), 50 a month but the gym is more CV with only a few resistance machines. It's guaranteed not to be filled with hardcore lifters and is very easy going. No chance of meeting a potential mate though as I think I'm the youngest member at 31. No nice young tail to look at For the 50 I also get a steam room, sauna, leisure pool and jacuzzi tub.

I used to be a member of the HI in Crawley when I worked at Gatwick. Much better facilites and cheaper too. Wish Sutton was the same.

I find its good to speak to some the power lifters and Worlds Strongest man competitiors, they explain how to get the best, and sometimes spot for me if im reaching my limit.

my gyms quite small and compact. I used to go to a commercial gym but it was full of the office people and not down to earth grafters.

As for me, my gym has given me free membership whilst I compete in the Natural BODY BUILDING contest ( I mean NATURAL..!!!), otherwise I would be paying £29 for gold membership, which entitles me to free use of the Sunbed and sauna.. plus the equipments...

I like your attitude TK.. you are spot on, when I train I don't want a social chat, after my work out then it's okay.. can't afford the muscle and intensity to cool down just for a little chit chat..

My gym is fairly large with a variety of equipment, for the serious body builders like myslef there is a another room area away from the bikes and treadmill, which obviously pleases those folks.. fortunately, we have a mixture of people those who want to keep fit and those who are just want a social chat..

Anyway, must go get my protein drink now...

Train hard and avoid the over stressing the muscle, you know it makes sense..

OJ..

When I first joined David Lloyd, I had to book an appointment for an induction and health assessment. The assessment was carried out first and my BMI was found to be quite scary and there were concerns about my blood pressure, (which actually turned out to be normal). Anyway, the trainer then put me on one of the cv machines, programmed it for 15 minutes and walked off and left me. He didn't explain how the machine worked, he didn't ask me if I had used a gym before and he didn't ask me if I was confident to be left. He told me he'd be back before the end of the 15 minutes and went. Fifteen minutes later there was no sign of him, so I hit the button for the cooldown programme and did that. Still no sign of him. So I wandered round the gym to see if he was evident anywhere. He wasn't. So I found another member of staff and complained. A lot. Eventually he was found. He didn't even bother to apologise. I walked out of the gym, down to the front desk and asked for the manager.

Not the sort of care and attention I expect from a gym charging £60 per month.

My gym has pretty pink weights... I think they are all of about 2kg! They use them in some of the aerobics classes. No idea why they amuse me so much, but seeing people jumping about with these little pink weights always has me in fits.

Alot of slagging off of the Lloyd here.I love it,everthing I need and no ones been shot yet, ideal.

The one in Warrington has the largest selection of free weights Ive ever seen in a fitness suite type gym.

I did have to have a medical type induction when I joined quite funny because the blood pressure inflatable strap thing wouldnt go around my arm,the fitness instructors face was a picture

Ive just returned from a session, the only gripe I have is that there is always something not working,if its not the sauna its the jacuzzi,if not that then its the filters in the pool,or the water fountain,or the swimwear spinner ect,ect.....

Later Victor Meldrew.....

I'm not slagging David Lloyd, just detailing one of my experiences and saying I could not recommend them. I guess a lot of it comes down to the management, so whereas one is dire, another could be awesome. It depends what you want out of it too, I suppose.

The impression I got of the one I belonged to was that they were more interested in the monthly direct debit than they were in providing any sort of health or fitness service. The gym I go to now is a lot less posh, but the instructors are friendly, well trained and helpful. They do seem to care whether people are getting what they need from the place and whether they are exercising effectively and safely. I've seen them stop someone using a piece of kit incorrectly on more than one occasion, and show them what they should be doing. I never saw that happen at David Lloyd.
