The david lloyd in Trafford Park seems to echo what everyone else is saying. Wonder if its anything to do with the fitness staff being paid peanuts

The gym I train at isn't posh, it's the staff that make it worth while.. as for the so called manager, he's a waste.. shame really, as the the staff that work for him are top notch, probably that's why I'm still there, and off course the other members...
I recently visited Firstness First, and was suitably impress with their set up... I like variety, so I may join them as they are nearer to me when I am working my day shift, 12 hr shifts, doesn't give me much time on my day shift to train at my local, so Fitness First may be my answer..
I would imagine some gyms' - no matter whatever their name are's - some good other's are poor, even in the true body builders gym as well..
OJ..

Telboy - yes back in 90' & 91'.. I was at Roy Parrotts gym in Southend before then.. and decided to try Jim's gym, which Roy put me onto as I competing... There were some big buggers there, and believe it or not a few were very decent.. But you occassionally had the ape wondering around..
Yes, I enjoyed my time there...
Have you Tel boy..???

oj, yep, that's where i trained most of the time. I was probably one of the "apes", especially in 90/91, as that's when i was getting pretty serious!! I used to like Jim and Carol a lot - great couple, haven't seen them for ages. They've been running that place for years now, you'd have thought they'd have got fed up with it by now.

Telboy - do you know Brian King..??? there's a few other's that I knew by their first names.. (probably you as well..!!) or by face only, as I would train and then leave.. Doing shift work, I would often train during the day time, and less crowded as well...
Jim was very helpful, as he helped me get my 91 WABBA NOVICE GB Championship title...
OJ...
forgot to mentioned that Jim's into Golf, when I spoke with someone who's been training there...!! and his training as taken a back seat, but that was a year ago...!!

Anyone know the one at Walton Park in sale (Cosmos), some proper monsters in there, small, bugger all Cardio equipment but it had the right atmosphere apart from some of the less freindly monsters suggesting that I had indeed done my last set on there.

Just have to echo a couple of your views on David Lloyd clubs.
I was a member for more than 2 years at my local David Lloyd (me and my wife), there was always at least one item of equipment broken...... but that is the same at most every gym I have trained at (over the last 15+years).
I just had a real problem with their admin side, it was cr@p, they charge too much, and are totally inflexible if you want to suspend/cancel membership.
I would never go to a large gym organisation again.
Now I train at a local independant gym, the staff are friendly, and they are interested in what you are doing, I even train with the owner most mornings (ex-british body-building champion..... him, not me ) would recommend going to a smaller independant over a larger gym anytime.....

I have always trained at a small gym, where the owner has been a champ and knows what's trainings all about... The only the reason why I would train at Firstness First, as it is only minutes away from work, and I need to train due to my body building competition, as I would be unable to drive back to my local gym in my lunch break.... Anyway, I won't abandon my local gym....
It's good to have a change.... spices up the training and life, new faces and some new assh*les as well to see..!!
OJ........

whats with all the weight training posts? summers coming and you want to get your vests out!
some of you people posting about creatine, whey, amino, blah, blah might do well to stop and think what you are spending your cash on!
the BB thing can become like the car thing, for most people 200bhp is a lot but you log on SN and suddenly realise that if you dont have 300bhp and nine dump valves you're a sissy.
there are people here who can just get in the gym, eat fine and be happy- just because some ppl on here are bigger, stronger, use more gear whatever doesnt mean that they are the norm......and following in their footsteps could be pointless.
when i was 17 i worked in a gym, body of a normal 17 year old nobody commented on it. did weights and at 18 90% of people i met commented on my size. at 19 i did all sorts of stuff and got bigger still, now my gym mates would comment on the seperation and my lat spread but most "nomal" people still said the same stuff "ohh, big arms"
my point is that there comes a point with all things where you reach a stage that most peole regard as beyond the norm (200bhp in a car or 18 inch arms) going past that point doesnt matter to them- my wife couldnt tell you if a boxter was quicker than a tvr...she just knows they are both fast and both would impress her. in the same way she didnt care if my arms where 18 or 19 inches.....she just knew they were big.
hence, when you go to holland and barratt and pay out for chocky shakes just realise that its like buying a scooby for your car parcel shelf- most people wont notice and those that do will be equally divided between those who are impressed and those who think your daft.
T
ps- this applies not one bit to ppl who like to be way beyond the norm so dont bother flaming if you cant live without your christmas tree lower back or your front mounted intercoller
no comments about roid use effecting spelling please

WTF did you do jonny gav??
To a point though, i'd agree with Tiggs. All the guys on here who have done serious training will know the symptoms; can't wait till your next workout, buying all the magazines which all say pretty much the same thing anyway, getting bigger but convinced you're getting smaller, worried about whether your rear delts are big enough to offset your traps, etc etc.
We've all been there. And i wouldn't say my ten years in the gym were wasted, far from it, but for the majority of people, that's just too far to take it. Most women, at the end of the day, prefer "toned" fellas rather than budding Mr Olympias, so nobody should be dissuaded from doing their little bit just because a group of hardcorers start talking roids, aminos and so on.

I was a number at David Lloyd. A bank account number I think. I'd never join another gym like that because I have serious issues with the way in which they operate. Based on my experiences, I could not recommend them to anyone.
I know most of the staff pretty well at the new place, which is cool. It also means I get (lighthearted) grief if I haven't been in for a few days. I don't asscoiate much with the other gym members, cos if I can chat whilst I am training, I'm not training hard enough. I tend to get in, do my stuff, and get out again. The gym is not a social thing for me.

Si whats wrong with Fittnes first ????
At least I can look at loads of loverly chicks when I train, Instead of big vainy men
I had a free trail at David LLoyds and it was one of the worst gym I have ever been to and by far the most exspensive
