some more bands/artists to ponder that ive seen -

warrant
aerosmith
thunder
little angels (saw them about 3 times, even have a tattoo based on there logo lol)
satriani (slightly easier to listen to then solo vai imo, tho like them both)
living colour
kingdom come
whitesnake (worst gig i ever went to)

here's a thought for a new rock related thread, bands you would like to have seen live....

Top of my list would have to be queen, followed by GNR i think.

Have any of you guys listened to slash's snakepit 'Aint life grand' album?

V.similar to Guns stuff and a very good rock album. Slash at his best.

Cheers

Cool

I have borrowed my brother's Napalm Death album, it does have some form of rythym somewhere.

You go into the realms of Fear Factory, Cradle of Filth and all that lot......of which I have a couple of albums. Yep, my music tastes are very broad and varied!!!

Good list MattW, especially the exceedingly cool WASP, Y&T and the Daddy - Dio. But you are missing a few:

Demon, Scorpions (early stuff not euro wimp), Saxon, Judas Priest, UFO, Michael Schenker Group, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy, Blackfoot, Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar, Montrose.

This is still pretty much the main stuff I listen to. I have a rule in my Corvette that I won't listen to anything made after the car, so it is all pre-1980.

Best gigs:
- Sammy Hagar (Birmingham Odeon '82)
- AC/DC, Blackfoot, Slade etc (Donnington '81)
- U2 (Joshua Tree Tour, Wembley '87)
- Kiss (Reunion Tour, Wembley '98?, no song younger than '79)

Worst gig - undoubtedly UFO in 82. Phil Mogg was ****faced and forgot the words to Doctor Doctor.

I still go to sad milk it a bit more gigs. In the last couple of years saw Saxon, Priest, Dio (unbelievable voice), Maiden and Graham Oliver's Saxon (actually better than Biff's main band). I'm 37 and I still dive on the floor for plectrums, what a tosser, but it is fun.

And The Bands Played On.....

None Prouder - Those groups were a little before my time. I'm 31 now and most of those bands had their heydey between 77 and 82. My first record was ACDC's "Rock n roll aint noise pollution" in 81. Other stuff like Van Halen(although 1984 was class) passed me by.

Like most other rock fans I was an all or nothing fan, if I bought one album, I'd get everything they ever did. i have to admit "use your illusion" i and ii were a big disappointment after "appetite". I never understood why they didn't ditch the rubbish and release one album of great material.

The internet has been a good source of stuff for me, songs like 747-Strangers in the night(Saxon), Dont Stop Believing(Journey), Paranoid (Black Sabbath) all great tracks from bands that I wouldn't necessarily buy albums from.

PS - if anyones got a copy of the FM live album(internet only) I'd be interested in listening to it.

Beltane Fire on the Misplaced tour?

Last saw Marillion on the Radiation tour, also been to the yearly bash at the Walls restaurant in Oswestry. Been to tens of Fish \ Marillion gigs, been disappointed with latest offerings from both artists.

Last gig was Big Country in 2000 with The Alarm supporting, Wolverhampton Civic, top venue.

FM were a top live band, used to go regularly to see them at Buckley Tivoli, they were always supporting Magnum.

beltane fire HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

i remember seeing them on the misplaced tour at the glasgow sec, i actually quite liked it enough to buy the album which ive still got, was a VERY strange album! Most of my friends hated it.

i gave up on the marillos after holidays in eden, really wasnt enjoying it anymore, have got all there newer stuff but it leaves me cold.
Fish's solo stuff is a little more enjoyable but i've ended up with two average bands instead of one i loved

thats where id seen FM from, magnum gigs!
also remember seeing heavy pettin support magnum, and thunder, stage dolls, roko and god knows how many other bands just startin out.

seem to remember magnum are back together.... have got some bob catley solo cds which are average at best.

Holidays was mediocre, "afraid of sunlight", "brave" and "this strange engine" are fantastic albums. Do yourself a favour give them a really good listen.

I've got the new Magnum album, not a patch on "Storytellers night" or "Vigilante"

Can't believe you bought the BF album, that double bass killed me!!!LOL They were sh1te, really sh1te.

So who was the best guitarist?

Personally, I much prefer Satriani to Vai (much more melodic to my ears.)

Still reckon Van Halen was one of the very best...

Estranged is fantastic. Love that song big time.

I'm more a early Yngwie guitar person - love all the early albums - favourite being the fantastic 'Trilogy', with 'Crying' my favourite song ever.

Well, best guitarist is a tricky one. You need to separate out technique from soul/expression from songwriting IMHO.

No doubt that technically each new generation gets better, as they should because they are building on what has gone before. To bew honest I can't really distinguish between Satriani and Vai, neither really do it for me, but I think they are the most accomplished at the moment. I prefer Yngwie's more melodic classical style, but i think he lags just behind in technique.

However, none of them would be anywhere without the Hendrix, Page, Blackmore, Iommi, Schenker work (yes I know Clapton, Beck etc also but they were more pure blues rather than the cross-over to rock). Of course that all culminated in Eddie Van Halen who was light years ahead of his generation, but unfortunately couldn't write a song to save his life.

For song and solo writing, I would have to look at Randy Rhoads (great name), Tipton/Downing (Judas Priest), Murray/Smith (Iron Maiden), Oliver (Saxon), Young (AC/DC - don't give me the crap about easy to play, who gives a toss, he could write fantastic riffs and solos and then play them while rolling around the stage or being carried through the crowd, and another thing he was playing hammer on/offs in the late 70's, listen to the solo on the live versions of Let There Be Rock) and Iommi and Michael Schenker. Not to forget Mr Stephen Rothery, one of the best yet most unappreciated guitarists around - unfortunately it all went wrong when Fish left as far as I am concerned.

Of the more modern era, Slash and Sambora lead the way. Both can write songs and great solos.

Overall though, the undoubted king has to be Alex Lifeson. For the youngsters out there he is the guitarist in Rush. Ignore everything after Moving Pictures in 1981. He was doing stuff the rest weren't even dreaming of. In the early days he was derivative of Jimmy Page, but then as he matured his range was incredible, La Villa Strangiato anyone? He also wrote the best "song" of all time, 2112. In about 18 minutes it encapsulates everything I love about rock music, including one of the best solo breaks of all time.

No more time at the moment so soul/expression and best solos of all time to follow - other than, listen to the solo on Dallas 1pm (Saxon, Strong Arm Of The Law), short, structured and that's how to make a guitar talk. MattW, you are lucky, you have still to discover the best era in rock music. Buy this CD. You can get a double CD of this and Wheels OF Steel with extra live tracks on both.

Opinionated, me!

Some of the bands I was into then, and proudly still belt them out today include:

Queensryche, Crimson Glory, Whitesnake, Dokken, Anthrax, Slayer, Blue Murder, Bonfire, Great White, Cacophony, Dare, Dan Reed Network, Dream Theatre, Fates Warning, Giant, Freak of Nature, House of Lords, Jimmy Barnes, satriani, Winger, Vai, Yngwie, Night ranger, Ozzy, Pearl Jam, TNT, Tony MacAlpine, FM, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Joey Tafolla, Vinnie Moore, Vicious Rumors, XYZ and Y&T.

As you can see a very wide variation in the rock theme.

Anyone got and wants to see a copy of FM's 'Indiscreet' album - I've been trying to get this, or a copy for years.

Best vocalist for me is Geoff Tate of Queensryche
Drummer - the guy from dream theatre - boy he can work a crowd!!
Bassist - difficult one this, probably Billy Sheehan (Mr Big).
Guitarist - Yngwie
Keyboard - hmm...Gregg Guiffria (HOL).

These are the guys I've seen.

best gig for me was Crimson Glory in 1988 'transcendence' tour.

On a slightly side note from the main issue in this thread - I notice there is mention of Satriani, Vai, Moore and Malmsteen. Does that mean we have some true guitarheads on board? Aside from the trad rock? If so, a new thread is indeed in order....
