The Guitarist Thread

Guitarists, Les Paul, we wouldn't have Electrics if it wasn't for him Hendrix is the original mater of innovation, Satch, Vai, EVH all followed and moved it on.
For blues, Gary Moore I like, some of Claptons' earlier blues stuff is great, but for feel, BB King and Albert Collins are way ahead.
I was absolutely gutted the other week when the g/f accidently taped Eastenders over my video of the Expo '92 shows in Spain, I did have the whole 5 concerts till then, what a crime
As for equipment, I still have my trusty Ibanez custom shop RG540 Tele, plus my old 70's Ibanez, and a Marshall Jubille Blue Vinyl combo and extension cab. I wish my playing could do justice to them Might sell the Marshall seems a waste to have it at home, and doubt I'll play in a band again now.

dazmakinen - if we're bringing the jazz guys into this, how about John Scofield and John McLaughlin? I saw Scofield a few years ago with Herbie Hancock on his "New Standards" tour. Wasn't really familiar with him at that time and to me he was just a guy sitting down playing quietly in the background with a lot of chorus ... then he stood up and played a solo on "Thieves in the Temple" that brought the house down. Awesome. Another ex-Miles Davis sideman is McLaughlin. Listen to his playing on Jack Johnson.
Let's not also forget:
Robert Fripp
Wilko Johnson
Tom Verlaine
Gear - the wonderful Line 6 Pod!

While on the subject of guitars does anyone know where I can get my truss rod adjusted and a few other things on my Gibson fixed without having to courier or post my guitar outside the country.
I would also like to know where I can get my guitar valued and if the serial number on the top can reveak any details about it.
cheers bye

I mentioned a list of some folks I'm into - doh! It was in one of the other rock threads - but here it is:
Queensryche, Crimson Glory, Whitesnake, Dokken, Anthrax, Slayer, Blue Murder, Bonfire, Great White, Cacophony, Dare, Dan Reed Network, Dream Theatre, Fates Warning, Giant, Freak of Nature, House of Lords, Jimmy Barnes, satriani, Winger, Vai, Yngwie, Night ranger, Ozzy, Pearl Jam, TNT, Tony MacAlpine, FM, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Joey Tafolla, Vinnie Moore, Vicious Rumors, XYZ and Y&T.
Far old spread eh? Off course theres no recent bands in it like - Saliva, Puddle of Mudd, Linkin P etc etc..

Ok, I could use a little help then
I'm looking for scales that are used in country music. I've been listening to a fair bit of it recently, and like the whole genre
Not any hillbilly rubbish, just modern country/rock style i've found a site that can show all the scales, but you really have to know what you're looking for, cause it does it by name

My list (this week ):
1) Page (No argument, ever, *fingers in ears*no I'm not listening )
2) Hendrix (Its cheesy I know but you can't not mention him )
3) Keef (Not much flowery crap just pumping quality)
4) Gallagher (Rory that is )
5) Satriani (bit of a show off but still bloody good )
6) Sir Bob (Such an amasing range)
7) Joni Mitchell (It always amases me how few women are rated at the guitar)
Most overrated:
Eric Clapton (Although hes good hes not THAT good)
Jeff Beck (Page sure put him in his place )
Slash
Me (Doesnt matter how often I think I can play soon as I start to play I remember how bad I really am )
If you want to include their writing ability in to the equation :
1) Bob
2) Bob
3) Bob
..
...
....
101) Bob
102) Page
Just kidding
o my equipment (guitar ): Les paul epiphone copy (theres no way I'm shelling out £1k on a good one when I can't play for **** ) and (the finest amp I ever heard ) Laney all valve 30watt mmmmmmm glad my best mate owns a music shop

Crush,
Scales used in country music :
Major Pentatonic
Ionian (Major scale)
Mixolydian (Altered major scale)
I think it has more to do HOW you play the scales and not what scales you play to give you that country feel.

Tomy Tank,
Spot on sir, although Vai is a little further down my list. I'm also a bit if a Jazz feind those guys can really play.
Does nobody else rate Frank Zappa as a guiarist, you should all take a listen to anyone one of his 52 albums !!
I've not being playing nearly enough recently but i used play in everything from Jazz groups to a thrash metal band, did some pretty big gigs and thought i was gonna get singed (laughing at myself now !!) a pregnant girlfirend soon brings ya back to the real world with nasty bump.......
Still have an Ibanez RG470 with a Crate stack that i like to crank occasionaly........And just to add another name that has come into my head, Nuno bettincourt anyone ?
Phill

Saw his son Dweezil with his band at King Tuts a few years ago - they played a medley for about 5 minutes changing into a different song every 10 seconds - with different tempos, key changes etc
total class
All hail to the Crow

Couldn't agree more Saw him a few years ago at Donnington, stood at the front and he was on the "ego" ramp all guitar, hair and flares. Rocked my world
Mikey
I'd have to say that Zakk Wylde is the best rocker around today.
For those in doubt, have a peek at Ozzy - live at Budokan (dvd).
Makes my hair stand.

Dwezil is also bloody good no arguments there, although i have nto yet had the chance to see him live !
Zak Wylde is another guitar god worthy of a mention I saw him at the ozzfest in donnington last year, and as has been said hair, flares and some really good music !
But lets face it if we mentioned everyone that is worthy of mentioning none of us would ever get anything done !!
Great thread guys,
Phill

Enuff Z Nuff & LA Guns at the Renfrew Ferry Tonite - can you go back, or should you just remember them as they were ?
By the way, Donnie is'nt on this tour, for tax reasons, but the guy taking his place does a great job singing & playing the guitar at the same time. Normally he is just a guitarist.

G A# C# Cm

A# G
& I'm "slightly" the worse for "excessive drinking"

Shug - Enuff a'nuff without Donnie - LOL! Mental.
The guitarist is actually pretty good - I saw them in the barrowlands back in 91 (ish) and I have hearing damage due to that concert. Love the 'Strength' album as well as the original one.

Alright shug,
The one I was at they were headlining, cant remember the support at all? Tom Russell (remember him) said on his rock show he never heard such a loud concert. More people than me must've been damaged at it.
All that said, great band.

resurrecting a great thread. Listening to alot of Y&T since the Monsters of rock tour (takes me back to being a hormonal 15 yr old ).
I'd like to add Dave Meniketti of Y&T. Superb stuff - hes being going strong about 25 yrs and still sounds great. Better still he does all the lead vocals, and has a commanding voice.
'Summertime girls..........woah!!' hehe!!

You guys are so un-hip...
Greatest Living...
Dick Dale. (Surf guitarist from the 50's still going strong)
Doug Pettibone. (new Hendrix)
Char Vinnedge. (female Hendrix)
Alvin Youngblood-Hart. (21st Century delta blues)
Johnny Winter. (Blues)
Sonny Landreth. (Soul-filled Steel/Dobro)
Luther Dickinson. (Blues)
Dead
Jimi Hendrix.
Stevie Ray Vaughn.
and the greatest that ever walked the Earth?
Danny Gatton RIP.
No one has ever played the guitar better or so emotionally as that ex-metal worker from Detroit...
Started playing in the 50's... committed suicide in '99[?]
If you have never heard or heard of him then buy '88 Elmira Street' you will be shocked...
