Right, I can probably claim to be the biggest Metallica fan on here (IMHO) seen as I've seen 'em SEVEN times so far.

In fact, what I class as the only perfect moments of my life where at Metallica gigs, but that's another story. Always wanted to be Lars Ulrich so ended up playing the drums I was majorly into thrash (Testament were the ultimate for me) and death metal at the time (although the hair got a lot shorter and my tastes have somewhat mellowed in recent years).

Later Metallica offerings (Load/Reload) don't really do it for me but Master of Puppets is still the greatest album of all time closely followed by ...And Justice for All.

This thread has got me reminiscing quite a lot......

Saxon are very good i saw them live again in Jan this year and it was the best concert they had done in the 12 years i have been going to their concerts. Their new-ish albumn Killing Ground isn't bad either I saw Maiden once in 2000 twice at Shepherds bush empire in 2001 and once again in 2002 at Brixton though i still think Number of the Beast is their best albumn the first night in 2001 was the best but then i have been to every tour since Some Where in Time so must be a hardened fan?

Dio is still touring and i saw him on his Kill The Dragon tour.

Def Lepard seem to have lost their way with Slang but they new albumn X is OK and i saw them at Brixton last month and it was OK.

Rush i just wish they would tour to UK last time i saw them was Roll the Bones tour in 92! Any body who is in to classic Genesis with Peter Gabriel i would strongly recomend "The Musical Box" who i saw at Royal Albert Hall doing a reconstruction of Selling England By the Pound tour and it was stunning to hear these tracks live!

As to which is the best albumn in the last two years i don't know.

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime, top album.

Used to be well into that scene and a regular as the Astoria on Friday nights if any of you remenber that. Saw loads of bands from Metallica, Wolfsbane,Megadeth, Flotsam and Jetsam, Mordred, Corrosion of Conformity, Anthrax, Death Angel, Sacred Reich, Dark Angel,Mortal Sin, Candlemass and god knows what else along with all ther goth and industrial stuff I was into.

Ah the good old days.

I still think Slayer are just awesome live. Sheer audio terror !

SO this is where all the rock fans ended up!

Metallica - Really went off them 'cause of the black album, but still quite fond of the earlier stuff, can't decide if 'Seak and Destroy' or'Take me HOme(sanitaruim)' is my favorite of their songs.

Like too many of the bands already mentioned to bother re-naming them, would be easier to list the ones i don't!

Anyone remember Helloween? The savage pumkin rocked! Although the only rock i listern to regular now is Anthrax (Mosh it up!!!), Offspring, Green Day, Hawkwind, Ramones and well, alsorts now i come to think of it!!

I saw dozens of bands at The Odeon in brum.

What a venue that was, Afterwards we used to wait round the back then 1 hour later you was let in back stage to meet the band - anything you wanted signing was not a problem.
We saw / met :

Metallica
Motley Crue
Iron Maiden
Blue Oyster Cult
Motorhead
Saxon
Dokken
Accept
Bon Jovi
Ratt
Twisted Sister
Girlschool

Fantastic days they were.

errr thanks Mattw now i HAVE to remember it
"Stiff upper lip" that is

Donnington best year ??

spent too many friday nights in the camp site getting rat arsed then drinking all saturday morning to remember all of them but 81 was good for its sheer novelty value (first of many) and for Ritchie Blackmores 3 encores .

My Favourite was probably AC/DCs first year which ever year that was?

George Lynch is the tone master !

Un-real lead sound !

Saw Dokken supporting Accept and also ACDC many years later.

He is my favourite guitarist of all time.

Rob Trujillo is the new Metallica bassist, was a former member of Suicidal Tendencies and played with Ozzy Osbourne on the Ozzfest Tours. They are playing at least two shows this summer in England and one in Ireland if anynoe is interested.

I am pretty impressed with the S&M album too, despite the mixed feelings on it.

Aye,

brings back some memories. I was never into the really "thrash" stuff, but still listen to AC/DC from time to time.

Saw Diamond Head a couple of times in Aberdeen, as well as Magnum.

Also saw Whitesnake a few times (early stuff was best), as well as Rush (Moving Pictures tour).

One of the best concerts I went to for atmosphere was Uriah Heep in Edinburgh, as part of the Abominog tour. Abominog was their best album for many years, though didn't quite match some of their earlier stuff and they did some incredibly naff stuff to fill up their earlier albums. Very heavy very humble had a couple of excellent songs, as did Salisbury, Magicians Birthday, Look at Yourself, but also some terrible ones.

Also got all the Rainbow stuff (never saw them on tour though), same for Genesis/Gabriel.

Saw Marillion a few times (not really "heavy"), and still listen to their early stuff (got Script in the car CD player at the moment), and their Aberdeen "competitors" Pallas (one album only).

Also saw Kiss in concert once, (their first tour not wearing the make-up), which was OK.

Most of the stuff I listened to years ago was recorded onto casettes (C90's) off album's (before CD's were invented!) for listening to in the car. Still got them all somewhere, so must go and listen to some of them again, if the tapes haven't disintegrated with age Sadly, I don't think a lot of the more obscure records would have ever been released on CD, but I'll perhaps do a search as I haven't bought any new CDs for a year or two.

Just remembered about some of the earlier Blue Oyster Cult albums as well, Deep Purple, Zeppelin etc.

Oh well, guess what I'll be doing this weekend

All my old vinyl and tape stuff is being slowly replaced curteosy of WINMX

Sadly, I don't think a lot of the more obscure records would have ever been released on CD
you may be pleasntly surprised want you can dig up using WINMX

Sorry guys thinking you are overlooking two of the best - Aeromsith and Motley Crue.

Saw Aerosmith last October in Tampa Bay supported by Kid Rock - out of this world.

And what can you say about the Crue?! Best rock band ever, full stop as far as I am concerned. Just a shame that they split, albeit I really like Tommy Lee's solo stuff. If you ever want a track to enjoy whilst "pushing on" in the scoob, it has got to be with Dr Feelgood or Kickstart My Heart.

They wail!!

Although the only rock i listern to regular now is Anthrax (Mosh it up!!!), Offspring, Green Day, Hawkwind,
.... Hawkwind .... Hawkwind? don't know if I'd put them in the heavy metal bracket, but definitely an ace band back in the early '70's (ah, great gig in Bognor in '72 - esp. Silver Machine - if the few bum notes were ignored ).

only got Black Sabbath and Motorhead in the car CD at the moment, tho

all i can say to anyone who loved 70s rock, try Diamond head if you dint get into them.

one of the joys of being around that scene then is rediscovering them now, after a long gap (kids etc)

unbelievably, you can still get Made In Japan brand new from Amazon.

but then again it is still the second best live rock lp ever, behind Strangers In The Night of course

Schenker,Blackmore,Page,Angus, etc, they just dont make 'em like that anymore do they

Michael Schenker, the best rock guitarist ever (just throwing that in to ensure this thread goes on for anther 50 pages)

Cause of you guys I am getting into so much trouble digging out my metal collection, which my hubby absolutely hates. Contains most of the bands you've already mentioned but mainly Maiden, AC/DC, Magnum, G'n'R, Metallica, Cooper, and even Jethro Tull

You forget just how good this stuff is, especially to drive to, bring back some fantastic memories of Donnington, Motorhead at the Mayflower and some other great concerts.

At least this is keeping hubby out of my scoob

Rach.
