Sorry to hear about your pets geting hurt, its bad news and no-one deserves it... but....
Im sorry Im one of those drivers who wouldnt stop after hitting a cat. Im not a Vet, its likely to be dark , the cat could be from anywhere, and the way people are nowadays Id likely end up in court for "assaulting my pet" or for defending myself against some hate-filled pet owner, cos Ive "murdered their baby"![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
There is an answer though - keep them inside! You dont let your kids play on the road during the night do you? My cousin has had a cat for years and years, and its perfectly happy in the house or garden.
I can't see there is another way. Anyone care to educate me otherwise?

Hope he pulls through ok. ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Our kitten Dexter was run over right outside our house a few months ago. The road is pretty quiet, and there are speed humps either side of our house.
![](http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/getpic2.asp?File=200332322294799328.jpg)
My wife heard a van driving fast past the house just before he was hit. He was killed outright - the driver couldn't care less and did not stop.
He was a little older than in the photo above, but still a kitten.
Very hard to explain to my two young boys (4 and 6) - especially only 3 months after the old cat had died

kev,
lovely little moggy - very sad, your nippers must have been gutted.
maybe the van driver didn't know he'd hit him, I would like to think most people would stop, but thats probly my blinkered view on human nature, I would have.
I ran over a cat once - well not properly run over, the cat had already been hit and was in it's death throws in the middle of the road at about 1 am. I had no choice but to drive straight over it. as i did i had slowed to nearley a stop and did not hear anything that made me think i had hit the cat again. i went to the only house i could see with a light on and knocked on, as the cat had no tag on it's collar to give me a clue where it lived. unfortunately it was an old dear, she didn't answer the door but looked through the window, and seemed to be in a bit of a panic with someone knocking on at 1 am.
in the end i put the cat in the car to take it home - hopefully to try and see if would last till the morning when i could get it to a vet. as i put the cat in the passenger footwell the poor little thing went into a fit in my hands and died, it really was awful, I will never forget the noise it made.
druddle , hope your cats ok.
buzz - i think if you had one you'd change your mind about not stopping.

Brian is not doing too bad. He has been quite bright, and the wound on one back leg is healing nicely.
He can walk around now, but still cant poo or wee himself. The vets are taking the catheter out today to see if he tries it when he needs to.
Fingers crossed.

I hope Brian is OK, poor little bugger. We have three cats and they are such unpredictable little sods when it comes to cars and roads, we live at the end of a Cul De Sac and they still seem capable of putting themselves in danger, dashing out from under a parked car at the last mo and such!
Keep us posted and very best of luck to him.

I have been to see Harry today, he doesn't look too bad. They are going to operate this afternoon and it looks like he'll be home in a few days. He has a small fracture in his pelvis as well, but this will mend on its own.
Phew! Was an emotional visit, but I am glad to say he's going to be fine. Could have been a lot worse, and at least the insurance will pick up the getting near to £1,000 bill!

Yep,I'm with PetPlan too. ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Really sorry to hear all these sad stories
I have a 3 year old cat (Scooby!) and I would be devastated if anything happened to her. I hope everyone's cats are safe and if they have had accidents, make a swift recovery.

my cat got put down on saturday with kidney failure, very sad to watch her, the vet said it would take up to 20 mins but i was told she went in under a minute. its quite strange as all of her possesions had gone before i got home(she was put down while i was in work), keep expecting her to be there when i return home ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)

One of mine was run over, attempting to cross the A1 at night. Fractured his leg, burnt the whiskers off his head and had exhaust burns all over his face. We'd all but given up hope as we called for 2 weeks for him with no sign.
Then one Sunday we had a call from a vet about 16 miles away. They'd scanned him in and found his details off the chip and called me. He's back now and 3 years on, you'd never know he was injured.
They are amazingly resilient little creatures.
Feline AIDS can be avoided with a simple injection that cats can have on a yearly basis. Every year mine get thrown into the vets for their annual service.

Clare and Dave - really glad that Harry is ok and be back with you soon. Was he pleased to see you Clare? Was nice seeing the both of you yesterday and Holly. Try and come again sometime. Will keep you informed when the dates are.
Also sorry Druddle to hear about your cat. I have had 2 cats killed in little over a year on a nearby single railway track - heartbreaking![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)

Lynne, good to see you too ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Harry was pleased to see me this morning when I went, they had just tried to move him to bring him to see me, but as he was in so much pain, they decided it would be better to leave him in his cage. He let me stroke him under his chin - his favourite place, but I could tell he wasn't happy. They had done nothing to his leg and it was at a really funny angle. Looked awful!
He had been to the loo, but had immediately "evacuted" when the car hit him, and also under general anaesthetic! I think there is no nerve damage.
Went back this evening to see him after his op. He was really groggy and they have put him on a drip because he has anaemia. They say this was caused by the accident and I hope it doesn't recurr. He wasn't too pleased to see me!! Think everything was a bit too painful.
They have had to cross pin the leg due to the break being near his knee. They didn't have enough bone on the knee side to put a pin straight down. These pins will eventually pierce the skin!
He will have to have these pins removed in about 6 weeks.
For the next couple of days he will be at the vets. After that he can come home, but must be in a cage for about 4 weeks.
The estimate to put him right was about £600-700, but as the operation was a bit more tricky, it's looking like over £1,000. And they still can't guarantee that they'll be able to fix it![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Oh well, we live and learn. Thank God for insurance!

Thank god he made a good recovery.
Weve got 4 cats and live near a main road. Unfortunaley we had one run over he was the fifth the poor little mite. He was a right little nutter and always brought a smile to your face. He was killed instantly the poor thing. The other four dont stray as weve got a huge garden and fenced all round so they dont bother trying to get out towards the road. Its just a pity hatti was adventurous and wondered.

makes me wonder, maybe a cat that lives in a busy area, Is more aware of being hit etc, and a cat that lives in a quite area dont expect it ?, cos they are smarter than we think they are.
hope he gets better.

sorry to hear that, one of mine was shot dead once by some local ******* - I know how it feels, gutting.
We found her by the side of the road with no marks on her other than a small hole just behind the ear - I used to shoot for a club and it didn't take much working out what had happened.
chin up, without sounding callous, go and get another from the cat sanctuary - not just to ease your children's grief, but to save a rejected moggy from the needle.
