non scooby owner

I personally think that people registering annonymous id's and posting in support of their company could give scoobynet a worse name.

and PLEASE let's stop insulting everybody on this board.

Are you REALLY trying to tell us all that a car valleting company who uses the products of companyX, posting an advert to sell products (no matter what amazing offer we were getting) from that company could should not be considered commercial advertising?

Do you think the companies that pay to advertise should have different rules applied to them than others?

regards

webmaster

Just food for thought for everyone, and in defence of Simon and the mods here... I'd like people to think about the Acceptable Use Policy of most ISP's.

Take NTL for example:

NTL T&C's (selection)

2. General Use

(a) to transmit, publish, link to, make available or receive any material which is defamatory, offensive, abusive, obscene, indecent, racist, harmful, threatening or menacing; or

e) in a way that does not conform with the acceptable use or anti-spam policies of any connected networks, the standards of the Advertising Standards Authority, professional publishing standards or any Internet standards; or

4. Unacceptable Behaviour

Nobody may use the Service, either directly or indirectly:

(a) to threaten, harass or cause distress, annoyance or discomfort to any other person or entity;

(b) to intentionally disrupt or adversely affect any other person or entity's access to or use of the Internet or any features which form part of the Internet;

Now - I appreciate that not all posts contravene these "rules"..... but I know a lot do.

Just something to think about.

Unless you're on dialup with a dynamically-assigned host address (or broadband with a really short DHCP lease )

Hmmm

To be fair... we'll be the first ones to complain to the moderators if we suddenly get tons of suppliers pushing their products on the board. Any commercial posters can always ask you to mail them offline. Personally I prefer a spam free environment.

Cheers

I was under the impression that they already did : that was why they bought the advertising in the first place, not for the ad exposure, but for the liberal interpretation of the rules that they receive.

Although, hopefully Simon's actions (which I support, BTW) demonstrate this is no longer the case.

As someone who gives his own time to be a moderator on another board I'd like to stick my own 2 pence in at this juncture.

It's can be very hard to be a mod, you have to moderate threads that you don't always disagree with and make judgement calls on threads that are very borderline. You also can get loads of abuse, not just the usual moaning about deleting threads either, but serious threats being made (or is that just toward me in general )

Without seeing the thread in question, it's hard to comment, but if one non-paying advert gets through it paves the way for more (i.e. loads of threads with "but joe bloggs got away with it, why did you delete my thread") at which point the paying advertisers, realising they're paying money when they needn't, pull the plug and the site disappears.

It's for our own good.

Companies pay for Banner adds, so they get plenty of exposure by the banner being at the top of the thread page, it's known in the trade as buying advertising space. The contract for that space does not include the control of the BBS moderators to limit their competitors unfairly, however that seems to be the policy from the webmaster, if not by design, certainly by action.

Things are changing on this BBS for the worst, it's now very dificult for people to tell users who they prefer and what products/suplier they prefer to use without that post being deleted as comercial advertising.

It's becoming very dificult for direct questions to be answered without the answer being deleted as comercial advertising. Moderators were being told, at the time i resigned, that they cannot answer a specific question if that involved a supliers name. So i was being restricted in the help i could offer people, i couldnt answer questions i knew the answer too and was told to sit back and wait for someone else to answer the question, after all, "there are thousands of people who can answer that question", NOT ALWAYS TRUE. Not good for the COMMUNITY. One of the reasons i became a moderator was down to the fact i helped people a great deal and had the knowledge to do that. All that has been forgotten in the name of not being seen as giving one suplier more exposure than another. Utter paranoia of a problem that doesnt exist.

An example

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=183631

In this particular thread, one user of this BBS asked a specific question, they needed help to find a suplier. I knew the precise person that could help them, my friend Jamie who works in Seattle at a dealer, so i asked her to contribute to this COMMUNITY.

Despite the fact this person got their answer, and was extremely happy about that, and despite the fact the suplier who answered had not posted on this BBS in months and had never spammed the board, so to speak, the thread was edited to remove the helpful information. That person being helpful was insulted by this action and most likely will never help a member of this COMMUNITY again. (I am using this as an example, it could quite easily be some UK suplier of some oddball part that may never post again for 3 months, if they are treated like that they wont EVER post again, not good for the COMMUNITY)

Scoobynet should be about what is best for the users, the COMMUNITY and not what is best for the webmaster. Yes there is a balance to be struck and you do need to stop the board being spammed constantly by non-pay feeing companies, but common sense has to prevail. Common sense is very lacking right now in the way this board is having useful contact information deleted. It is upsetting possible beneficial members from being here and offering advice to users.

Advertisors pay for banner adds, i would be utterly stunned if they were concerned about the ocasional post by a suplier or member of this bbs discusing a suplier being left in the thread so that people can benefit from the information, after all competition is healthy and it's an added oportunity to sell their own goods by responding in a thread.

I personally could not continue to be a moderator of this board whilst common sense went out of the window and the mentality of a control freek took hold. I argued long and hard about this policy, as i see it as destructive to the COMMUNITY, in the end i realised i was waisting my breath as i was constantly reminded this is NOT my BBS by the webmaster, and that as a moderator i had to follow his dictate.

This BBS should be about the COMMUNITY and used to have common sense as its basis for moderation, thats lacking where comercial issues are right now IMHO. Of course this is not my BBS, so it's the webmasters perogative, but the current balance is very wrong IMHO.

Sorry for venting about this and sorry for SHOUTING, i seem to have learned a bad habbit from someone, i'll try not to do it again.

Personally, I think the moderators do a wonderful job, and would gladly sell my house and all its contents to support their fight against tyrany and advertising.
