trust me my WIFE would tell me, as would my family, my work mates and my friends!
I DONT sweat much, certainly no more than anyone else, unless it gets very hot in which case I obviously do.
I suppose theres a difference between being "fat" and being "bloody huge" that you "thin" people are blurring a bit.

A spade is for digging (e.g. a hole in the sand), a shovel is for shovelling (e.g. loose coal into a furnace).
The vast majority of overweight people are overweight because they consume more calories than they need. I know - I used to exercise 12 times a week and was extremely fit, but after 7 years off, I had put on 3 stone.
Hypothyroidism causes people to tend to be overweight because their metabolic rate is lower than it should be. Therefore they don't burn calories as fast as somebody with normal thyroid function. Therefore they need fewer calories. Therefore if they consume more than they need, they will become overweight.
Disabled people have a tendency to become overweight as they are often inactive if wheelchair-bound. This does not have to be the rule - there are many extremely fit wheelchair athletes.
There is no argument - people who are overweight are so because they over eat. This has been proven scientifically (I think at Cambridge a couple of years ago) but it's not exactly rocket science.

Mungo - very eloquent, and correct IMHO
(btw - after you have finished with the hole can you use the spade to shovel the sand back in, or should you go back and get a shovel?)

if I have lettuce with doner meat and chips, does it become healthy? or do I have to have "diet" coke as well??
pffft...
You people think its easy! I have to be very careful what I eat to keep my figure - its not just "pick any old salad sandwich" you know! I have to choose jacket potato fillings with care to make sure they have at least one fried ingredient, and I have to get special lard spreads for my toast - otherwise the weight would just FALL off me! How horrible would THAT be!

If someone's body is not working properly it may be that they need to restrict their eating to a ridiculous degree in order not to become overweight. Expecting anyone to do that, and blaming them if they do not manage is not realistic.

but isnt it true that eating little but lots more often will over time speed up the metabolic rate? Im sure thats what I read..
Therefore in the interests of this thread I'm going to try this by eating a bag of crisps every ten minutes for the next month. I'll be down to 10 stone before I know it

Besides, whatever the reasons for someone being fat, insulting them because of it is not acceptable. Being overweight does not make someone a bad person.
'Fat' may well be a description, but using it against someone and intending it to be an insult is not on.
Apart from anything else, some people on here seem to be having a problem working out what fat actually means. Models are not normal, by anyone's standards and judging anyone larger than the women who appear in Vogue as fat is not being very realistic. There's a big difference between being so obese as to overhang an airline seat, and being a size 16.
Giving fat people abuse about their size is only going to compound the problem. It's difficult enough to do anything about it, without encountering continuous negativity.

would like to be able to eat more than one lettuce leaf per day and not be constantly hungry? Get real.
I suspect that if their metabolism reached the stage of burning the very small number of calories a day contained in one lettuce leaf, it is time to go back and see the doctor. Allowing 10 calories worth of lettuce (approx 90g - so quite a big leaf) no-one would even be able to sustaing a heartbeat and breathing for the course of a day.
Who suggested getting real?

Buzz, eating little and often will usually help boost metabolism and can help many people lose weight. People with metabolic disorders are onto a loser right from the start though.
The links between eating a weight are very poorly understood at the moment. Most of us know slim people who constantly eat rubbish and do very little exercise. I know I do. I also know overweight people who do not eat much at all. The reasons are not well understood.
The standard line that you'll get fat if you eat more calories than you burn is indeed true, but there's rather more to it than that.

The point TK is not about people being fat - I am fat - Call me names if you all like - I don't give a ****. My problem is with people who claim that it is caused by medical reasons. This is crap. It is caused by eating more than your body needs.

in the *vast majority* of cases, this is *not* true.
People, we are fat because we eat more than we burn.
FACT.
Now either live with it, or get up and go for a run!

My point, fast bloke, is that some people would need to go to unreasonable lengths in order not to put on weight.
Yes many people are overweight because they eat too much of the wrong sorts of food and drink too much beer. Many other people are overweight for other reasons, many of them medical. There are several eating disorders that tend to lead to their sufferers putting on weight, and cases of these are only increasing. Abusing these people for being fat tends to make the eating disorder worse, so they gain more weight. That's without mentioning the people who die from anorexia each year because pressure from society makes them believe they are fat, even when they are under 4 or 5 stone.
Insulting fat people is not constructive and it makes it more difficult for overweight people to try and lose the weight. Losing weight is, in general, a difficult thing to do and there is very little help or support available for people wishing to do so.

I disagree fast bloke. There are people with general medical reasons. Admittedly there are a lot of people use this as an excuse, but that doesn't mean that there are not people who have genuine medical conditions that make it extremely difficult for them to maintain a "normal" weight.

So how else can I address a `fat` person?
Being not small myself, I call everyone a fat *******, skinny *******.
Would someone feel less insulted if I called them overweight, instead of fat?

krankyd, I've seen the quality of some of your posts, and I'm not going to dignify the ones on this thread with a reply.
