Hi Jim,

OZ is OK. Every man and his dog has a scoob here. They're everywhere. Big difference to Greece, where you need a comb to find them. Lots of Nissan GTRs as well. I'll be back in Greece on the 20th of this month.

Piston slap is different to det. Piston slap is caused by too much clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall. The sound you hear is the piston slapping against the cylinder walls.

Cheers,

George.

Piston slap is back when cold!!

Subaru won't touch a MY98 with 100K on the clock will they?

Ran sweet as a nut all the way down to NBO though!

Unhappy

My MY98 had it last year. Dealers didn't want to know when I asked dispite car only having covered 40,000miles. Ignored it until little end got noisey then got a STi bottom end built up for it and it still worked out cheaper than a main dealer fix.

I'm glad to see that the recording that I made is still useful even after a couple of years! I got rid of the MY98 last september, and got a new STI7 instead - I've not regretted it! BTW, I don't mind at all if you host the file elswehere if it's more accessible, I'm just glad that it's been useful!

Isn't there anywhere on this BBS that we can upload files like this permanently, or is the "sticky thread" the only way to go?

Wrexy, are you on holiday in Sydney, or working?

Hi Alan. The sound file has defo been useful. I've noticed the, "what does piston slap sound like" question not coming up any more. Agree that it'd be great if this thread could become a sticky.

M8, I was in Sydney for 3 weeks on holidays. I'm back in Greece now. Are you in OZ then?

Cheers,

George.

I have the same problem on my MY98 car. Its sounds like a diesel car! But since 7-8 months the sound goes away by itself. In this time the only thing that I had changed is timing belt and oil. I was using castrol 10w-60 tsw and change to 10w-40 mobil 1. Now using mobil 1 and the sound goes away and I'm changing oil and the oil filter in every 4000 kms.

had mine fixed a few weeks back they replaced number 4 piston in my MY98 sounds ok now and is loads better they payed for the parts oil etc and half of the labour it cost me 200 bucks to fix and i thought that was not bad at all as i am keeping my car for a bit

even now the engine still sounds a little bit like it i think that scooby engines sound like that anyway but when slap apears it makes it sound a howl lot worse..as i said i want to keep my car and it goes out of warranty in december then comes the full decat and induction kit and i didnt mind paying that amount to have an engine that would last me....

respect to wrexy for keeping the thread up nice one mate
