Have a 3 year old. Don't regret it for a minute. Also still have a scoob 'cos they make excellent family cars. Better than a Focus IMHO
I agree they cost what you want 'em to cost, upto a point. We must spend 40 quid a month on toys for him but that's our choice.
Anybody want a high chair, cot and buggy? All free, buyer collects. Drop me a line as per profile

If the Govt gives you up to 70% of chilcare costs you need to be earning less than a busker with a dog on a bit of string.
Our childcare costs are our second biggest outgoing since our mortgage - just for 3 days! However my son loves it, and my wife needs to work for a few days so we can still get some 'nice' things!
However, the scoobs got to go - caught myself looking at the new Renault Megane Scenics the other day and thinking....hmmm, those look nice....lots of space and cubby holes.....

Well I have an 18 month boy and he has cost in excess of £50k, when you include salary loss, replacement car etc but that is small fry in comparison to what we have now.

I'm never going to have kids so I'll start sticking the money aside for the ferraris.
Can anyone explain logically why they have kids? Most people I know seem to have accidents and then learn to enjoy the result as well as the conception.

Does anyone know how the tax credits and childcare things work for unmarried couples? I'm resigned to getting not a penny from the gvt as usual (£100's of pounds a week tax in, maybe £40 a week back if I need short term help due to being unemployed but with a big mortgage...)
On yer own son! However would the soon to be 'unemployed' pregnant missus be able to get anything with me in the background on a decent salary?
Cheers

we have a 3 month old 'un
In cold hard cash terms i recon it costs around £ 12.00 per week for food nappies and related stuff. this excludeds clothes, toys and 'spur of the moment' purchases and they grow out of 'em fast!
Would not be without her though she is just wunderful.
As for waiting until you can afford to - if that was the case we would be drawing our pensions first. You adjust your lifestyle to cope as best you can.

Interesting subject.
How can you put a price on a human life? If you had to work out how much you'd cost your parents then I think it'd be a shocking ammount! lol
hell I know how much I cost my own pocket now, let alone being a I want, I want, I want little kid
One thing I will say is, if you think "We'll wait until we can afford kids" then you will never have them. Unless you are finanically comfortable, or the ol 6 numbers come up, you will never be able to "afford" kids, as the costs are not something you can easilly sit down and work out. If you really want kids, then go ahead and have them and enjoy.

it cracks me up when people come on and say they don't see why people have kids and they never want kids. now, if your parents had adopted the same attitude...

ok, it's 6.30 pm on a Friday night. I've had a cr4p day and am just about to leave. I'll get home about 8.15pm.....
But there's one really great thing about my really crap day... at 8.15 my girls'll hear the key in the door, I'll hear them call "Daddy" I'll get in the door and I'll get a couple of really nice big hugs...
Then suddenly the crappy day wasn't there anymore....
And that ladies and gentlemen is just one of the many pleasures of children and why they are worth every penny....
Dave

Diesel,
Makes no odds at all mate, the forms just state husband/partner, we're not married and filled out the forms ok, in typical government form style though you have to fill in the forms for your earnings 2000/1 and then adjust, or something like that, as always it aint straight-forward!
cheers

Didn't have time to read all the thread about this but did see the bit about twins at the top. You can take out insurance against having twins.

Top tips to keep costs down:-
Don't buy a big pram with all the bits for £500+, get a buggy travel system with a car seat that clips on for half as much. A big pram fills a scoob boot and is too heavy for general lugging about. I have one, used very little, most bits still in wrapper.
Keep the scoob, an excellent family car. Fits everything in we need, has 4 doors and air con.
Accept all offers of help from family members, allow them to buy loads of stuff whenever they want, someone has to buy it and it makes them happy.

Pineapple, hot curries and, err, sex! That's what will sort it mate - if you can stomach it of course (both of you!).
