Not replied to this one yet.

Personally I think the girl in the pics is a but to muscular for my liking. I know it's not what is on the outside, but the inside that counts, but still, my personal preference is for a slightly less toned girly.

Photo of me? hmmm, lets see. As we're talking about toned, and muscular, how about this one of me (I'm the one on the left, not the chap who's wearing my gimp suit!)

I'm 6ft 4in, and I think aprox 15 stone in the picture. Let's say I'm prob a stone heavier than then, but thats due to lovely Canadian food

As said many times before, I prefer curves to really skinny girls. It really pains me when I hear a really skinny girl going on about being fat. Yeah I know you have to be happy with yourself, but come on, constantly not eating a proper meal in case you get fat, sorry, think you need help there love. I know a few girls who seem to think that they must be skinny otherwise boys won't look at them, FFS! we're not all like that! If a girl trully is happy being wafer thin, then fair enough, but I don't really know any who are (not that I know many really skinny girls).
I just prefer curves, be it a few, or lots, it's curves I like.
I know I can't comment, as I'm a chunky ol duffer, but hey, what the heck.

I would *never* tell a girl that she had to lose weight before I'd go out with her, that's wrong, plain wrong! If the girl wishes to lose weight, so be it, however, I'll probably tell her that she in no way needs to as she's lovely, but hey, girls never listen and think you're being sarcastic (just kidding ladies!)

The bottom line with me is that I want the girl to be happy with herself, and do whatever she needs to do, gain or loose weight, tone up, tone down, or whatever. As long as she is happy, I will be. Hell, I care about the person, not the body, it's what's in the head and the heart that really matters. The body is just a vessel that carries the embodiment (no pun intended) of the person around.

Question

Is the girl in the pic too muscled........i dont think so.Wearing normal clothes and not pumped up she'd look okay.

However, it's easy to become disillusioned when you're constantly presented with an image of 'ideal' that you can never, (sensibly), achieve.

Try not to put yourself in a position where these images enter your life,as much as is possible.

that would be like shutting yourself in a darkened room with no tv.

Images of the 'perfect' woman are everywhere, from covers of magazines, to tv programmes. You can't escape it.

Sex sells, and that's the bottom line. Excluding Sophie Dahl, when was the last time you saw a woman with a fuller figure advertising something? Bingo!

Women are constantly baraged by pictures of 'perfect' women, and thus it's like being told "This is what you MUST look like, or else no man will like you" and that is WRONG WRONG WRONG!

And with this messaging women who do not meet the 'ideal' feel they are not true women, which again, is wrong, they are.

It shocks me how many young girls will see models and try so hard to look like them by not eating, or binging, it's wrong and society is to blame for it, but there is not much that can be done to change it.

Think I've made my views on this pretty clear.

Oh and I agree with Em on the subject of pictures of any female not meeting the 'ideal' criteria being posted, most of the time negative comments are posted, so you wonder why people don't post pics of themselves. Me? I'm an attention seeker so I love seing pics of me (that is a joke BTW). I know I'm not the 'ideal' shape for a bloke, but I'm happy with my shape, it's round, and cuddly, and that makes me, well, me. Not entirely happy with my body, and could and might loose the odd pound here and there, but generally i'm happy with where I am at, I've not (yet) had anyone call me a fat biffer, but no doubt you all will now

As I said to you the other night, she doesn't do it for me. Toned is better, and with some feminine curves. But, at the end of the day, I know it sounds trite but for me it is what the person is like on the inside that matters most

The pressure put on young women to be thin especially with the current fashion for bare midriffs is astonishing, it is no wonder the incidence of diet related diseases continues to rise

the 'fitness' contestants not the female bodybuilders as in the photo 'do it' for me.
Very athletic, very flexible with excellent muscle tone...

How shallow does that sound

Markus, it's more like 'if you do not look like this, you are no good at all'. It's not just about whether men like us. As I said, larger women are less successful in the workplace, so size does matter for us, apparently.

Maybe it's felt that a woman can't control her size, she can't control anything else. Who knows?

I was talking to someone tonight about how bloody silly it is that women's magazines talk about what shape is 'in' this season. We are constantly told, the waif is 'in', or bums are 'in' or big ***** are 'out'. What a ridiculous concept. Women strive to change how they look based on a highly tenuous, manufactured concept touted by glossy magazines. I can't imagine a bloke accepting a magazine article telling him what shape he should be this season, or treating him like he's some sort of fashion accessory, so why the Hell do we? The worst thing is that the majority of these articles are written by women!!!

Ooooops.

Em, what's Sophie done? she gone all slim now?

You're right, a bloke would not give a damn about what some mag said was the 'in' shape, why so many women give a damn about what some rough old dog of a journalist says is 'in' I don't know.

Be proud of what shape you are, and sod anyone who don't like you for it!

Is there any truth in that though. If a person is overweight can it be said with any degree of truth that its because he/she doesnt care about her appearance?

She gave in to the pressure,(and, probably, the call of the money to be made), and starved herself into the waif generation. Just like Geri Halliwell.

SS, IMO, sometimes it's due to caring too much about their appearance.

I'm not going into details on here, because it's too personal, but I can honestly say I did not become overweight because I didn't care how I looked.

However, I will point out that bulimia tends to lead to weight-gain, but it's usual for sufferers to care desperately about how they look.

It's a difficult one this.

There was a thing on the radio about a young woman suffering from anorexia who wrote to Elle magazine complaining that the images in Young Elle magazine had caused her illness. They of course denied responsibility. The discussion on the radio pointed out that it is the advertisers that promote, such images, and the reason they do so is that their Market Research tells them that these are the sort of images that sell products, i.e. what the punters want to see and aspire to.

Which is not to defend the images one sees in magazines for one second, but to recognise that actually as a society we need to re-evaluate our values. The fact is the country is full of people on diets not full of people sticking two fingers up at the advertisers.

For my part, I of course spend a lot of my time training in the gym to keep fit and lose weight. My argument might be that I am trying to lose the weight I gained from giving up smoking, but whether that is 100% true is another issue...

OK, just to add a point for discussion:-

Let's just say that most men prefer slim women. Do you think the reason for this is because that's what's suggested as being the right thing to do by the media? Or, is it basic instinct to be drawn to the 'fitter' looking person who might be more likely to produce healthy children? A sort of 'natural selection' situation if you like?

This is not intended to offend by the way.

There are 2 main reasons I decided I needed to lose weight. The first is that overweight people have a heightened risk of developing serious health problems, including diabetes. My grandfather had diabetes and I can do without it, so I'm doing what I can to lower the risk. The second factor is that it's nigh on impossible to buy nice clothes in larger sizes. If I see something I like in the window of a clothes shop, I'd like to be able to walk in, reasonably sure they'll do a size to fit me, and try it on, rather than walk away knowing that even if they did do a large enough size, it'd look awful anyway.

Other factors were involved, but those are the main ones.

<controversial conspiracy theory mode>

It's just another way to try to manipulate and control women. As a group of people, we are getting more powerful; we need to be controlled somehow, right?
