Fraid my citroen AX 1.4 wiped the floor clean with a calibra 8v and it probably wouldn't have mattered if schumacher was at the wheel, it does look nice though!

I think that cav-t has been lucky with the reliability of his turbo model.
I don't agree, he's just followed the very basic rules of vauxhall 4x4 ownership, which have been mentioned previously in this thread.
My brother currently owns/runs a Phase 3+ Calibra turbo and it's just turned 108k, no problems with the running gear whatsoever and he's still on the original turbo /internals.

Nowhere did I say my cars faster than a 3.5 Cav . For all I know it can do 0-100 in 5 seconds I dont know, anyone go any figures ?. It was posted that scoob drivers would be suprised if they saw one. As most drivers (including most scoob drivers ) have never experienced a type R or RA they also maybe surprised thats all. I put the figures in so theres a benchmark to give people an idea of the performance as most people think a WRX does 0-100 in 18 seconds, simple as that.

The trouble is because the new WRX is heavier and a lot less powerful than the JDM version people believe all the WRXs from 1992 have this performance or worse that they are slower .

To answer ChrisP, yes, a Cavalier Turbo was a factory built model by Opel, not that you would think that though! The amount of Cav Turbo owners who have taken their cars to get an MOT, and the tester has said "Jesus christ, what the bloody hell have you put under there?".

They are VERY rare cars, only 5805 were ever built (hence why Haynes won't do a manual for them!), an estimated (or is that decimated) 1500 are left, after the Nova/Astra owners have transplanted, stolen, plain burnt out (!), or smashed up because the driver can't bloody handle them!!

They replaced the GSi 2ooo model, and the Turbo model didn't even make it until the end of the Cavalier run, I'm pretty sure, Turbo's were stopped on `M` plate, the main Cavalier run ended on late 'N' plate, with some rare 'P' plate models around.

Better spec on the Turbo over the GSi 2ooo, 6 speed box, 4x4 as standard (which can be made switchable), Leather and Air con as options on first batch, later models had as standard, 160mph clocks, 5 stud 16inch wheels, and a few other Facelift touches.

As for other peoples experiences of the 4x4 system, in a way, if the previous owners haven't ever looked after the car, then all you would do is maybe prolong the life of the system before it goes boom. But for every tale of woe with regards to the 4x4 on a Cav or Calibra Turbo, theres another person who has never had a spot of bother.

Always rotate the tyres, always change fluids in the intervals stated (in fact, err on the side of caution and do it before!). I'm on my 3rd Turbo, I have had 2 2wd GSi 2ooo Cavaliers, and a pair of 4x4 GSi 2ooo Cavaliers, and both of those never gave me any gip either.

I would imagine there are plenty of horror stories about Scooby ownership, plenty of pitfalls, that all you guys have long since overcome and know how to avoid, but that doesn't stop the uninformed bleating out the same old lines, generally, never having owned or driven the car in question.

Anyone would think I hate Scoobies, the fact is I don't, I do detest some of the younger owners (present company excluded) who think they can race and beat anything, anywhere..... the 'anywhere' bit being my problem. Its a pity Imprezas don't hold their value it bit better to stop some of these idiots getting their hands on these cars, they'd struggle to get to grips with torque steer on a Metro, and some bright wag at an insurance company gives them the go ahead in an Impreza?!?!?!

Still, it is nice to come to a 'rival' forum so to speak, and not have to wade through tonnes and tonnes or derogatory remarks or one upmanship just because I drive something different.

Nice forum so far

Keeping it cheerful

Good answer and yep I agree it gets me down when I see young lads thrashing impreza about as you know its a big bill waiting to happen, giving plain rubbish bhp figures. Funny when you ask them what ecu are they running, how much boost, what injectors are they running, what turbo etc etc . Told one lad he had a mistubushi td04 turbo and he said "na mate its a subaru and has a subaru turbo " .

I to prefer the limited edition models and mine is 1 of 1000. Basically the same but with a few nice touches here and there.

seriously tho, a mate of mine COLIN, had a minded STI scooby and he got a shock when a approx 300bhp cally turbo was keeping up with him!! hee hee
Seen your LOCATION and was wondering if it happened to be a dark blue Calibra ??

Regularly does 13.2 1/4 miles at Crail/Santa Pod and this is from an engine with over 150,000 miles on the clock..... C20LET Vauxhall engine = bombproof.

As for the comments on "weak transfer boxes" - with exception to a couple of folks on this thread, I aint getting into a discussion about this with ppl who only have heresay to go on......

Lets remember that the cars are also around 10 years old (the mechanics didnt change from day 1) and see how far ahead of the competition they were then......

END OF MESSAGE

Acuator not properly set up? Worn out Turbo? Incorrect fueling? Abused engine? If you've just come from an STi to a standard Cavalier/Calibra Turbo, for sure you would be a little dissapointed up to 100, but for most people, they are quite potent in standard form. Certainly doesn't sound like the car was running right if you were so underwhelmed by the experience.

can't answer any of them, mate

was running the quattro at the time and was really looking forward to the calibra as i do like the look of them, plus had some 'special' cavs and astras whilst working in Ireland, so was liking the vauxhall engines.

but the driving experience was nothing really, very disappointed.
was a nice car but ...

thanks for the opinion lads but looks like im going to get a 1.6 gti 205 for insurance reasons plus it would probably be faster than low spec calibras due to its size??

The 1.9 would beat all the 8v Calibra's, would give a 16v a hard time up to 60, but beyond that the Calibra would reel it in.

The 1.6 Pug 205 isn't highly regarded and you would have to thrash the nuts off it to get it to sprint. How much extra would the insurance be on the 1.9?

Perhaps there is another way of getting the turbo power in your calibra without all the reliability issues :

Buy a minted 16v as late as you can get it, source a turbo motor, get it checked/rebuilt and or modified and drop it in. You will have to put all the power through the front wheels though.

It's just an idea. I was put off buying a turbo cavvy years ago, because I knew I was too lazy to care for it the way it needed it. To be honest, the idea of have to swap the tires regularly just sounded like a pain in da a*rse.

Alternatively, by a v6 and sell yer granny to pay the insurance
