I picked up a BlueBlack 02 WRX at Christmas with a superb discount and with the gold wheels and morette's it looks fab.
Like the new shape and would still buy one new if I could afford it.
The 02 shifts and is great fun. Thinking of the PPP pack soon if funds allow.(& the Mrs goes out for long enough to get it to the gagarge!)
Go for a new car if you can mate.

I jumped from a classic to a MY '03. The only thing I am disappointed with is the seats in the MY 03 don't grip the same as the classic.
Performance is probably about the same and it is screwed together a LOT better.
Clincher may be that MY 03 is strongly recommended to run on Super Unleaded. Fuel consumption slightly better than My 02 or classic but more expensive to run as Super Unleaded is 5p/litre more expensive.

Have to agree with above, The 03 wrx is a fine fine automobile.
I too went from an 98 wagon to my 03 wrx and would never dream of going back to a classic.
Also agree with the seats, to wide, And they dont hold as well as the classic.
IMHO , The 03 is subarus finest car to date, And a huge step in the right direction.

Agree with Steven, personal preference is the winner.
There are now three generations/styles of Impreza to choose from catering for all requirements, prices, modifications, tastes etc. etc.
Very happy with my first Impreza, 02 WRX with PPP.

very happy with my my03 wrx
just got in from a pootle around the local roads to rack up some more miles to get over that 1000m running in period (only 100 to go)
then......it's gonna get a proper blast......
seriously good solid car with good looks (im my opinion anyway) - WR Blue Wagon. AND secure from what i can understand with the factory cat 1 installed.
but as others have said, the seats are a bit naff - too narrow and not long enough to support the backs of your knees
