So - safe advised limit for men is 28 units/week.

Therefore:
13%/14% wine = < 3 bottles per week
Stella = 8 pints/week = 1.1 per day!!!!!!

If I was you I'd back off that a bit mate - you'll get used to it, and you will start wanting more... Get a wine box and limit yerself to 2 glasses a day or something - try and stagger it so you are close to the weekly reccommended allowance, with a couple of proper pissups thrown in a few times a month

I could drink Rioja till the cows come home, but force myself not to have it every day

Alcohol and Calories

Bad News? Alcohol does contain Calories.
The energy content of pure alcohol is 29.3 kilojoules per gram. That is equivalent to 7 kilocalories. (1 kilocalorie = 1 Calorie of diet)
So there are 7 Calories in every gram. That is about 5.5 in every mL.
In a 75cL bottle of wine of 12% AbV we know it has (0.75 × 12 × 10 × 5.5 =) 90 mL of alcohol which is 495 Calories. At 6 glasses to the bottle that means just over 80 Calories to a glass. There are a few Calories in the rest of the liquid but usually not enough to bother with, though sweet wines (e.g. sherry) certainly have more.

Good News? They may not count!
In the latter part of the 90's interest was shown in determining how these Calories affected us in dietary matters. Assuming the drinking is done in moderation (say 2 or 3 glasses of wine per day) it seems that the alcohol does NOT have any affect at all in terms of putting on weight. The correctness of this conclusion and why it should be so is a matter for a lot more research. But note that it only applies to WINE.

BEER is a different matter. The total Calorie content there can be as much as twice the Calorie content of the alcohol on its own. This is particularly true of the stronger beers (say 5 or 6 %AbV), but less so for the medium beers. It is even possible to find 15 Calories in 100 mL of a non-alcoholic beer. But these *extra* Calories do contain some nutritional ingredients (which is not true for alcoholic Calories). That famous "brewer's paunch" has to come from somewhere!

Either way, save money by hopping over to France to buy your wine.

From 9 quid return on Eurotunnel if you leave after 3pm and return before midnight. Plenty of time to get the shopping in

In my experience a wine box is a bad idea.... I always find myself tucking in just because its there! Plus you can't see how much you've had, whereas finishing a bottle has an air of completion about it!

Workmate has just been banned for 18months for Drink Driving.

He was stopped at 5.15am on his way to work. He says he shared a litre bottle of strong wine with his wife the night before but he did have about 2/3 of the bottle himself, stopped drinking at 11.30pm

He now looks like getting fit, 15 mile bike ride every day.

666ml (2/3 of 1 litre bottle of strong (14%) wine) would be 9.32 units
according to the calculator.

(a std glass of wine is 125ml of 9% wine - so 666ml = 5 glasses of std wine - times that by 1.5% for strong wine, and you're looking at 8 glasses!!!)

While guide is processing 1 unit per hour, guess it depends on health
and weight etc....

So, if he'd necked it all from 10.30pm to 11.30pm, then it'd be 6-7 hours before
he'd be at just below drink drive level - so 5.30am at LEAST.

Just shows you the danger!!! If you drank same amount at 5pm, you prob wouldn't think of driving again that day - but stange how the start of a new day after a nights sleep makes you think you are "cured"!!

Well Just watched Sweet & Lowdown on DVD with my girlie, good food, nearly 2 bottles of wine consumed between us and she has bloody fallen asleep!

In this case, wine is bad, but may have something to do with her jet lag from flying back from US and not sleeping for 48 hours so far... damn!! Well I hope so ha ha! Welcome to scoobynet then

Don't worry about it dude - far worse vices to have in this day and age.....

7 bottles of vino per week = 9X7 units of alcohol = 61 units.

Government recommended limit is 28 units for a man.

The main thing is to have a few days a week where no booze is drunk to allow the liver to recover.

Or just have a coup0le of glasses per day, that should be fine.

My uncle (now well into his 70's) has been drinking at least 4 bottles of wine a day for the last 20 years at least.

The governemnt recommended limit = 1456 units a year.
His consumption =13,104 units a year.

The 20 year totals=262,080 (my uncle)
29,120 (Governemt recommended)

He should be dead.
He is in fact as strong as an Ox, and enjoys his 8 mile round trip
to the offie every day to get his collapso.

Good on him.

Saint

It takes a full month for the liver to recover from toxins ie alchohol. If you don't feel drunk or have a hangover then that is a BAD sign. Shows your body is tollerating more and more alchohol. If you say you NEED it to de-stress,then that is a bad sign too. Sorry to be a doom monger but look at the big picture. Look at George Best . Want to go down that road ?

I've decided a bottle a day is too much and I am now cutting down to either 3 glasses a night or 1 can of strong lager watered down with lemonade to make it last

I have now had 3 nights in a row where by 10.00pm I have not felt half cut and to be honest it feels good

I've identified 7.00 til 8.30 as my 'danger hours' where I feel like I 'need' a drink. Basically this is when I have normally been plugging into the vino. It seems that if I 'moderate' the drinking during this period by 8.45is the urge appears to have gone. It's early days and I probs sound like something out of AA but I'm not

0-60,

I find the same thing - I have a specific time when I start craving a drink. for me this is about 5pm, as I start work early I am usually at home or on the way by then. when i am driving home i am thinking "god i can't wait to get home to a nice cold beer". as soon as i get in i check the fridge or visit the offie. however if i get thru' till about 8pm without a drink i find there is no massive urge to have one. just have to get over the crisis time...

it's hard to resist the temptation but I am finding making the drink 'long' does the trick

I can't open a bottle of wine now as I will drink the lot. Got a wine box now and tick off the glasses on the calendar so can keep track

I am finding it hard going and I never thought I would

My wifes family dont drink before 6pm and can be a bit sanctamonius about it, then its party time !

My father in law canes the red wine, he's still with us, suspect he is being slowly pickled, he also smokes those little brown Cigars (Cafe Creme) like there is no tommorow and spreads butter like plaster, I would feel crap all the time if I did any of that !
