Simon,
Its the kind thought in the first place thats usually remembered longest.
Im sure they may well still approach you for a club solution as you obviously have the all important experience.
Daz,
Dont forget that if the planned RSOC MEMBERS only rule comes in, 73% of the BB users you know and love wont be allowed on anyway!
Remember my POLL of afew months ago when this topic was broached? virtually ALL th regulars were NON members. Certainly the highest and most regular posters were non members too.
Also dont forget, im not an RSOC member either and i had the highest post count at 5K
You have joined too Daz so im sure youve noticed we now have 225 members in less than two days.. (if i dont ban Droptop )
I never intended to get into a Scoobynet / Passionford wrangle, it looks like both parties considered the same end result with different approaches to it, at the same time M8.
Scoobynets approach being the official club hosts, mine being "Sod it im going to get my own running"
Good debate anyway guys, ive enjoyed it.
Thanks for your time everyone.
Best Regards,
Stu

If it's of any use, I've got spare rackspace and bandwidth
If it's low volume (up to one million hits per day) then I could do it free of charge. If it is higher volume then I'de need to charge for bandwidth (about a pound for every ten thousand hits). As long as the load doesn't exceed 20 million hits per day, then I won't need any additional hardware so no cost. Currently I can only support about 60 million hits per day, I'm getting another couple of pipes in the next few days, which will extend that to roughly 1.5 billion hits per day. Space wise I can accommodate about 2 billion hits per day, but of course there'de be a hardware cost for that type of throughput I've currently got about one terabyte of online storage, which should be sufficient for a while, but I can currently accommodate about 20 terabytes.
If cost is an issue, then a single server setup would be most cost effective (read: free). If you need greater availability then I'de suggest a symmetric load balanced cluster (may be able to supply a small cluster free of charge).
Software wise I should be able to cope with the usual suspects, eg UBB, vBulletin, Ikonboard et al... basically as long as it isn't IIS/ASP based it should be fine (if it is then I'll need to put an application firewall in front of it, which may be chargeable, and also I'de need an IIS box, which again would be chargeable).
Maintenance wise, I can only offer to look after the server(s) and make sure that they're happy bunnies. You'de need to find your own board admins and moderators... (which may be no better a situation than you're in right now, but at least the hardware and bandwidth could be free).

Doing well with passion ford - I think you might have split the RS bb for good (well done - was about bloody time!)

Terabyte? Is that a thousand gigabytes?
At the end of the day the RSOC BBS will be back and if it wants to attract a pleasant breed of people then it needs to work and run efficiently and be moderated correctly.
But PF is keeping everyone at bay at the moment!

Whoah!! There's another GREAT offer from pat!
I think we can all see now, that there should be no reason why the RSOC board couldn't come back and be absolutely solid.
It will be very interesting when it does come back up. Obviously, if it IS fast a whole hill of people will move back over to RSOC, but I hope everyone remembers Stu and that the RSOC recognise the fact that he has been maintaining their traffic while they were away.
All the best
Simon

A Terabyte is 1024 gigabytes, each of which is 1024 megabytes, each of which is 1024 kilobytes, each of which is 1024 bytes. Or at least that is the conventional definition, but hard disk suppliers prefer decimal rather than binary, so they define it as 1000s not 1024s (2 to the power of 10 is 1024, hence that breakpoint). So, roughly speaking, it's 1,000,000,000,000 bytes of storage
If I were to get all technical I could try to explain how the fully symmetric load balancing works... but it has confused the hell out of many a network "guru" and sometimes even I get confused... which is worrying since I designed it!
Cheers,
Pat.
