Flat Eric, a couple of points:
1. I haven't been negative. Quite the opposite. I just find it sad that with all the animal cruelty going on in the world, people only sit up and take notice with a case like this. How many people here will post a few smilies, vent some anger, and then sit back and do nothing afterwards? If people are really angered by this sort of thing, why don't they do something about it by donating to PETA/RSPCA etc., or even volunteering some of their time to help these organisations?
2. You imply that somehow I wasn't upset by this atrocity or that I even condoned it? Why? As I've said, I was just as appalled about this (if not more so) than everyone else who's posted. I'm just a little more realistic and cynical about peoples' reactions than others might be.
I'm not bitter, and don't have any particular disposition. I just wonder whether the reaction would have been the same if the animal involved had been, say, a reptile, or a pig, or a sheep, rather than an ickle fluffy puppy..... <sigh>

MarkO you miss the point. This thread was not started to put right all the wrongs in the World. We all know that there are a 101 things that need addressing not just to do with ickle furry animals. But does that mean because we cant sort them all out we just give up?There is a chance, just a chance that something could result from this thread. And thats enough for me.Why cant it be for you?
Quote "I just find it sad that with all the animal cruelty going on in the world, people only sit up and take notice with a case like this."
What ever gives you the right to say this?
So people dont notice bull fighting, bear baiting, dogs for food in Korea, wild bird markets, fox hunting, rabbit coursing, dog fighting, chucking goats off bell towers for some Spanish festival....etc. I could be here all week listing them. Not forgetting the whale & seal hunting.
There are numerous groups set up to try & change these things. Some have not got a snowballs chance in hell of making any difference, but that does not make their efforts any the less worthy. But these are on-going things that are already being dealt with, this thread is the here & now.Call it a kneejerk reaction,so what.At least its a reaction.
Quote "If people are really angered by this sort of thing, why don't they do something about it by donating to PETA/RSPCA etc., or even volunteering some of their time to help these organisations?"
Why be so presumptuous?
How do you know the people replying to this thread dont?May be some do.People do what they can,in whatever way they can.Just because they dont make a song & dance about it doesnt mean they dont care.
Quote "I just wonder whether the reaction would have been the same if the animal involved had been, say, a reptile, or a pig, or a sheep, rather than an ickle fluffy puppy"
Again you are showing your blinkered view of the world.Did you not see the protests at live animal exports to France. That did include the sheep & pig trade.Battery hens, equally non fluffy but vehemently fought over by those that care.If you know of some reptile abuse,& you feel positive about it, put it up on here.Thats your freedom of choice.
You pick your fight, you cant fight them all.
I am not trying to win the war on animal cruelty.I just want to win one battle.I would settle for that right now.
Mark
PS Thank you for your three posts so far & for your future replies. They will at least serve the purpose of keeping this thread BTT.So take heart, you can do something constructive with your life. All is not lost.

Berkeley has now gone to the NCDL re-homing centre in North Leeds. They have already had over 100 people offering him a home. RSPCA still no wiser, but he is well one mend now.

I appreciate your update Tony thank you.
Hopefully as Berkeley is so young he will bounce back both physically & more important recover mentally.
It was on the cards that the NCDL would be inundated with calls to re-home him.Let's hope the hunt for the pond scum that hurt him does not loose momentum.
Mark.

Reports are coming in that an address has been passed on to the authorities. This is from where Berkeley was allegedly seen coming from.
Let's hope this is a bona fide tip off & leads to an arrest.

Well the little chap now has a new home on a 4 acre farm near Ripon in North Yorkshire. His new owner is a dog loving 38 year old professional broker type fella.
His ears are healing nicely.
Probably the best ending we could have hoped for. The NCDL had over 200 enquiries for the little chap from all over the UK and even Europe.
Cheers

Freedom of speech, freedom to express one's opinion, freedom to walk on by & do nothing, freedom to be negative about anything that you don't happen to feel strongly about.
Seems to be a trend for you.

W.Yorkshire police have handed the investigation over to the RSPCA.Read into that what you will.
Reward now stands at around £7,000.
The new owner has renamed him Spark,& his new home is on a four-acre farm near Ripon. The guy already has a two-year old border collie named Laddie, who was also adopted from the same NCDL shelter.
Postscript.
The manager of the shelter said: "so many people rang to see how the little guy was. Thanks to the interest in him we have managed to foster some other dogs.So some good did come of this."
And this is why I love them.
Bracken looking down on Red Tarn before we head along Striding Edge to Helvellyn.
Bracken doing what he does best.Posing for the camera.
