I love the old stories of the UK Turbo being slow , had my 99uk for 4 and a half years now , fully intended to 'upgrade' sooner but as an everyday car that I run on regular unleaded I still love it. Although I am now running it with a full decat & that has made a difference.I even beat a 1.2 swing nova the other day , now tell me the UK's are slow!!!!!
Wish I had foldy in wing mirrors though!!!!!

What about the new Astra turbo guys... I had a go against one of these the other day in my standard UK MY98 and although he couldn't lose me I couldn't make any ground on him.... ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)

I own a 03 WRX PPP and my brother has the Focus. I have driven the Focus for around 500 miles, not a lot but enough to get an idea as to what its like.
I have never had my WRX without the PPP and have only driven one without on the 2 test drives that I had. I have never driven any other scoobs apart from the STi8 (again for 2 test drives) & WRX wagon.
I make all the comments from an average drivers point of view!
Looks are subjective and personal so the only comment I will make is that I like the look of the RS personally (not as keen on the inside)
Handling
The RS is better in the wet and dry, though this is very marginal and in the real world where you need to take corners at a common sense speed you will not notice it.
I have never had a problem with the steering ala Jeremy Clarkson. It handles really well.
The WRX is my first 4wd car though so when I learn to drive it better my view on this may change.
Perfomance
When rolling the RS is no match for the WRX PPP but it is not much behind - I would guess it would be very similar to the WRX. Note, the 'test' has not been done at silly speeds.
From a standing start the WRX PPP hammers the RS in the dry (and more so in the wet).
My brother who has driven my car would agree with the above comments.
Whilst I love my car I can see why some want the RS, it is a good car.

my 'standard' MY97 UK Turbo was dyno'd a couple of months ago at 234BHP. They vary considerably. nothing passes me except other better scoobs and the local Porker carrera 4. Its now running at 248BHP.

My farther in law is always bragging about his new SEAT Coupra? anyhoo, i think its next to the top spec one, i think SEAT was boasting a 140bhp, so i showed him whats what on the way back from a hospital visit yesterday... I dare say the matter will never come up.. Best not to upset the old fella. My standard my98 is due a clutch replacement too, as i get slippage when the turbo kicks in, in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Still kicked his butt.

You got to be careful...........
There are more and more modified Focus RSs out there...
Our one runs a standing 13.4 second quarter and 153mph top speed - not too bad for FWD........

I agree with you James UK Scoobs are pretty poor instandard trim. 208/ 215 bhp was never that impressive. Like UHF says doing 60 and flooring it was comparble to my girlfriends Saxo!!
Overall I think they are a pretty disappointing car. Perhaps I over expected...................And just before I get slated I run a UK97. Thankfully I'm up to about 330 bhp now although I have to say I'm still disappointed!!!
Some people are never happy....................

I'd have thought it would be the other way round?
Never driven a std UK impreza but I imagine they must be slow when rolling?. I'm not talking 0-60 figures here but real world rolling along and flooring it.
My wrx (when standard) seemed slow and they have more power and shorter gearing than uk. It goes okay now though
.
I had a std gti-r with (227bhp 4wd) and that when rolling was slow, modified ones i've had were quite quick.
Ready for a roasting from std UK owners![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I posted this last year ... can't believe it's still going!!
Would love to find that Focus RS now, especially with my WR1 ... the focus was a nice idea - too much hype though, and FWD!!! Cupra R is a much better car

I'm guessing yours is similar... how much does power like that cost?

I have a UK MY99 and an HKS Superdragger cat back as my only mod.
I have come across TWO RS Focuses on the road.
1st hissed and roared so loud I could hear it over my HKS.
It had silver number '270' after its RS sign and was unlikely to be standard.
We went down a 3 mile stretch of dual-carriageways with 3 large roundabouts staggered evenly olong the way.
Lowest speed (at roundabout) was about 60 max was 135.
From 2nd, to third to fourth after each roundabout he pulled away from me in the same way as I pulled away from my mates standard UK MY99.
Enough for me to be behind but not a total push over.
I was not amused, but hoped it was modded. I think im on about 245bhp and as he had a lighter car I presumed he was on around the same figure maybe a bit more, unlikely to be 270bhp but you never know.
2nd was under similar conditions down a shorter stretch of dual carriageway on a clear sunday night road. 2nd to 3rd gear, the focus tried to undertake me, was level and i could see him through my passenger window. I was not caning it as much as him. I could hear his actuator flutter and turbo hiss over my cars exhaust roar so it again was likely to have at least a cone filter.
I pulled away from him in a similar way that the rs 270 one above did to me.
He was not going to catch me.
I guess from the above that a MY99 with a de-cat or cat-back is highly likely to out run an un-modded focus rs, but I think the un-modded focus rs may slightly have the edge against an unmodded MY99 or earlier uk car. At least between 60 and 135. Probably due to the 2wd/4wd transmission losses.
Saying that, I used to have an Old rover 620 turbo with a £8 bleed valve and a £50 cone filter, boost wound up as far as the ecu limit allowed and I took out a number of standard UK 99's from 60 to 150...

Mr Smurf - you are not going to be all over (or even faster) than a Porche Boxster S. If you don't believe me, drive one! Same weight as yours and 250+ bhp. Ignore 0-60 times. It's a quicker car than a 215bhp scooby.
As for Focus RS, had a blat against one up a long hill (mines a MY03 STIPPP) and obviously all over it, which was nice. Not sure I'd get by a well driven one very easily on an A/B road though - probably have get up to silly speeds to do so. Just IMHO of course.

That would likely belong to the bloke who runs Torquesteer and yes it does have circa 270bhp.
