Why Poland should not join EC

masacre - thats what you are doing Evil shredding poor Dai (schroeding )
To which old empire are you refering? The one with the Texan running it (it's not old so I suppose not), the one which thinks Napoleon can be exhumed and it can rule Europe again, the one which signed three treaties with Poland saying that they will not revise their eastern border and now are again preparing to do it or the one which has a former KGB agent as president and where policemen have a funny way of killing terrorists along with their hostages... There are quite a few OLD EMPIRES here :>
And there is Poland where you can still find people who say that Lithuania, Balarus and Ukraine are our historic provinces and should be glad to join us...
Nevertheless - we need to believe. Because EU's ideals are worth believieng. Europe united - Otto III, Palacky's, Czartoryski's, Neuman's, Schumann's dream. We have never been so close.

It's just... look, the British are not exactly well known to understand other cultures are they. "We" speak their language (with spelling mistakes, I admit), but on average, they don't speak any other language. Language is culture...
UK food sucks like a decaying French snail, they still think "common wealth" but are hopelessly behind the times...

The only truth in it is that English people don't speak other languages enough thats true but without us all of europe would be speaking german so get over it.

Oh no Bikes - it's because of the US that we speak English - Europe used to speak French before And if it wasn't for us you would all speak Russian vide 1920, the battle of Warsaw :>

LOL
Hold on, aren't you supposed to be backward ?
The Northern part speaks Flemish/Flamand/Vlaams (read: a Dutch dialect), the Southern part (well, roughly) is Walloon/Wallon (French speaking). Brussels is supposed to be bi-lingual. There is also a small community speaking German (WWII-leftover in a way), but that happens to be one of the most beautiful parts of Belgium...
The "frontiers" between those 2 languages (Dutch & French I mean) happen to be formed about 2.000 years ago when the Romans (you know, those agriculturals LOL) were stopped on their quests. French is a "Gallo-Roman" language, where as Dutch/Flemish is very closely related to German/Scandinavian languages.
"Belgium" was actually an experiment condoned by the French, Germans, English, and Dutch in 1830. They really wanted to see how "capitalism" would work, and Belgium would be a sort of "laboratory" for that. Took those countries quite a while to settle on a "King" that was a compromise figure accepted by all of them.
I have to admit (:blush to knowing less than nothing about Poland I guess because we were learned to throw all the Eastern countries on to one big pile (communism eh). Is the Polish language also a "Roman" language ? Or are there lots of ciryllic influences ? I could ask my friend "Derek" Google, but I just have to admit knowing way less than I should know about this
FWIW

The reason you don't know any other languages is because your education system svcks big time, and you have your heads in your asses. (generalization, I know, I *do* know some intelligent British people )
Have you ever visited the graves in Ypres ? I did. Did your dad fight in that war ? Mine did. So what the **** is your point ?
Try taking a reading course... enough quotes from you LOL
Damn, quite a few nationalists on here ?

No but you have being a w@nker problems.
You are so far up yourself that you need a miners lamp to comb your own hair.
I don 't intend arguing with because quite frankly I can't be bothered so i'll resort to insulting you, why, because I like it.

Great thread...
...up to a point. Shame that a sometimes humorous and sometimes healthy debate turns sour with personal attacks. Just when my tiny mind was beginning to enjoy some more Scooby Net Education(TM)...

Another thread ruined by some ignorant person thinking he/she is better than everyone else. It seems if any thread gets longer than 4 pages, it attracts some big headed person thinking everyone else needs enlightening by their obvious "intellect".

Just saw the "From" bit under your username: "The land of NO donkeys" - ROTFPMSL
To answer your question - no, I liked the thread better when the debate outweighed the insults and bragging...

Sorry for going off one one I suppose
Bied, not Ypres/WWI, no My dad was born in 1921, so he wouldn't have been much use in WWI. I meant WWII
Anyway, I'll better get away from this thread now

there was a battle of Ypres in WWII? What do you know...
That still makes you old... My great grand father fought in that war (1939) and my grandmas older cousins continued later (1944).
But if you are leaving I'll have to put the investigation on hold
I searched for 'donkey' in yhe Polish pages - found some zoo maps and general info. Did you know other name for donkey is 'domestic ***' Anyway - land with NO donkeys

Belgian eh
I know Leuven, and Antwerp quite well. Spent an awful lot of time working there. A trapiste of your choice is on the bar for you.
Shame you have such negative views about Britain, and such positive ones about the EU. Belgium always has had a special interest in the success of the EU. It never has held much inyterest
As for politics, as I said I have zero interest in anything that portends to be political. I believe that if someone has a burning desire to be a politician it should for ever stop them becoming one.
Speaking as one who helped 'police' the Balkans some years ago I was dissapointed at some of the comments flying around last night. No not darn a macho soldier, just a darn good one. THe macho ones wear stars and stripes
This was not a point about the EU as it exists today.
I am tired of trying to reiterate the point I was making that I feel that Poland thinks that the EU will solve its problems and was just waiting for the investment to roll in. That was it, a bit of humour thrown in on top which is my way.
I hope you all enjoy EUtopia along with Mr Blair

I hope we will although I still say that the majority in Poland, and the political elite , know that EU is not heavens-sent and that it will change Poland into Eden.
But please Dai - move around Poland more - Grójec really isn't the most representative and what the people say there is not what they might say elsewhere.
Before you go Evil - Polish is not a Roman language - it's Slavonic (? 'slave' en francais - c'est drole que les origines de cet mot sont 'esclave' et ' esclavage' )
There are three groups of Slavopnic languages - Western (Polish, Czech, Moravian, Slovak (closest to Polish) and of teh peoples around Cottbus,Germany) , Southern (Serbo-Croat,Croato-serbian,Slovenian) and Eastern (Russian inc. Belarus, Ukrainian (although this one is closer to Polish as it was a part of Poland once) - I hope there will be bo Carpatian Hucul Nationalists coming to ScoobyNet because I didn't mentin them or any other smaller dialects
Funny thing is that the languages vary but the swearwords are all the same

OK last one then LOL
Discussions become difficult when it seems that all parties retrieve into their "camp" only defending their POV... guilty there as well.
Dai, I have some very positive and some quite negative views about Britain, I visit it regularly, it's a beautiful country, I love the "car madness/trackday" atmosphere... I love the language (...), I love the very special humour as seen in AbFab, Blackadder, Python, Alas Smith & Jones etc etc... (unique in the world I'd say). To conclude from that I only have negative views about the UK is not very logical to me ?
As for the EU, I already explained above why I am very sceptical about it as it stands, and I have a dim view about the near future. I talked about the corruption & the general uselessness of the EU parliament above... Now how does that make me a EUtopean ? Does not compute does it ?
And yes, Belgium (which is not "my country", I just happen to live there, pay (lots of) taxes, have the "nationality") has a lot to lose EU wise, as the income generated by hosting all those (faceless ) civil servants & buildings is pretty vast. OTOH, Brussels is almost ruined as a city as a result of that...
Bied, slavonic indeed (slavisch in Dutch) - <slaps self>.
And no, I don't think there was any fighting in Ypres in WWII, I think you misread my earlier comment... in fact I think the whole war in 1940 here lasted 3 days before the "army" was squashed (Blitzkrieg). My dad then managed to get away to France, hoping to join the Foreign Legion, got caught in Toulouse, was moved to a work camp in Braunschweig <sp?>, and survived.
My comment about Ypres (well, the whole "Flanders Fields") graves tried to convey that no one with an IQ above 50 should ever forget what happened there, and how our asses were indeed saved by the US/UK troops, and how many young people died there
Hence why I very much dislike the "anti-American" feelings in my country (and government). It's a disgrace IMHO. Being critical is good, being cocky like our foreign minister is lower than a very low thing.
We currently also have a big discussion about a new road that would make quite a few of those graveyards dissapear. "How long do we have to be grateful for what happened back then"... erm... like as long as you can ? What happened to respect ?
Anyway, outta here
PS: I'm not accepting your offer of "taking Blair", but I'll take the trappist, ta
