It's such a lightweight but annoying and frustrating 'illness'.

I don't suffer as bad as did when I was a kid but been quite bad this weekend. On Cub or Scout camp, I often used to wake up in the morning with my eye lids sealed shut. First time it happeneded was a tad worrying.

I always used to use Piriton, but it makes me drowsy, and you're not supposed to drink alcohol having taken it... which isn't always possible on a sunny day!

Bizarrely, I have found that smoking a cigar seems to stop my nose from being irritated, and hence stops me sneezing... but this doesn't go down too well in our office...

I'm suffering too - I think with regards to antihistamines its hit and miss.... it doesnt seem to be a class effect and undoubtedly some work better for some people.
The local treatments (eye drops, nasal spray) - help specific problems really quite well.

I'm using benadryl with good effect + willpower not to scratch my eyes out

Suffered since age 13, some years were bad, some years I could barely go out.
itchy eyes, permanently itchy nose (by the bridge) and the constant sneezing made life a bit of a misery for the whole season.
this year (and last) I appeared to get on top of it quite a bit so heres my remedies to get me out again.

1) dont scratch, obvious but essential, that little rub of your eyes feels wonderfull but youll be sore!!
2) dont sniff, EVER, blow your nose with fresh tissue.
3) eat honey on toast every morning, must be locally produced honey, or at least the most locally produced honey.
4) benedryll tablets are best for me, but each season a different tablet seemed to be more effective so try a different one if your not getting any relief.
5) GOTO THE DR. they can give you a steroid injection which will last all year, cant recall name but it worked a charm when i had my school exams, you cant have it every year tho and you have to carry a card in case of injury.
6) get tested to find which pollen/s your allergic to (seldom done but helps you to plan your worst time of day)
may to august was daytime for me, then aug to sept was early evening.
7) hooter spray didnt do **** for me, just tasted like cr4p on the back of your throat, but some swear by it.
8) same with eye drops.
9) put a wringing wet hanky (folded like the karate kid) over your eyes if they are sore, then lie back and enjoy the coolness.

I was an appaling sufferer, it controlled my life and people who dont suffer dont understand one little bit and that makes it worse. The best thing was dont sniff or rub your eyes no matter how much you wanna, then try to find the best tablet for you. Now I am able to control it through till june without any pills, and just last week I had to start benedryl to get over the itchy nose.
I take honey all year round, (nearest to me is from the new forest) and that seems to work a treat (plus I love honey).

Peaople I havnt met in ages still ask me if I suffer and when I explain not so much anymore they are amazed at the recovery/turnaround.

and the final piece of hope is that you can GROW out of pollen allergy as quick as you GREW into it. Keep hope that this season will be your last.

I've found hayfever way worse than usual this year - it's given me quite bad asthma for only the second time in 17 years. It starts with tree pollen in Feb, I get a lull until late May, and now it's really bad. I'm taking Zirtek this year (seems to work best if you alternate year on year - it was Clarityn last year, and I used to take Terfenadine (can't remember the trade name) until it was banned for over the counter. Use beconase too - works a treat. Finished a whole ventolin (salbutamol) so need a new one of those, and probably some becotide (I think it's the same drug as beconase - beclomethasone dipropianate). Group buy on drugs anyone?

I take Piriteze for it.

Sometimes I can't do anything because the symtoms of hayfever are so strong, but Piriteze seems to work quite well and I soon forget I had Hayfever for most of the day.

They were talking about this on GMTV earlier. Dr Hilary mentioned wearing wraparoungd sunglasses if you are out as it can help stop pollen getting to your eyes. Dunno if it works.

I used to cut grass around a large factory which took 6 hours, once a week. I went through hell with my eyes and nose and nothing would help.
I don't have said part time job now, and i also hardly suffer from hayfever.
My advice is, cut grass for a living and go through hell - the result being a natural immunity

I use fexofenadine- which they give to RAF pilots seeing as it

A) is super strong
B) is totally non drowsy.. I fall asleep on nearky all the major brands..not good as I drive..

I begged my doctor for something better that nclarityn etc.., and he told me that fexofenadine is rarely dished out as it ludricrously expensive for GP's to prescribe.. however when he saw the state I was in he relented..

Kenalog is a steroid-
I have a HUGE DOSE and it sorted me out for a whole year but come winter I have never been so Ill.. I had flu four times in one winter..
kenalog totally knackers your imunity ro regular illness...

you can ask about it tho.. its even FREE at the GP's!!
(again not really suggested or offered due to risks it is a high potency steroid)

my 2p worth, and yeah I suffered something chronic yesterday despite the uber mdeication..

Me too, apart from the itchy eyes. If you try it give it a few days as I found is takes 3-4 days to start to work.

I only started getting hay fever when I was 18 now 23, mine started about 3 weeks ago and its really pissing me off, this year I've found Benadryl 24 hour stuff very good, my girlfriend brought me the 8 hour stuff by accident yesterday tried that and was not impressed. Someone else suggested the Vaseline up the hooter (just put it on, look a tw@t but hope it works)

I also find my asthma inhaler helps relieves tight chest moments.
