Cryptwalk,

It took a couple of months for my summons to come through (I believe they have up to 6 months )

Cheers,

Ian.

I know this reply is a bit late because this thread has died off but I'm new and I've just read it so... I drive the A66 just about every day and I notice that there are a lot of cumbrian's here. I'm from Carlisle myself. Thought this might be of use to you for future reference. Don't know about the legality of posting such information but hey anything that helps cheat the police out of a few fines can't be bad can it.

Thanks Dave.

Printed off and will refresh my memory before any future trips on the A66.

Also see here http://cumbriasafetycameras.org/schedule.php for a weekly list of where the vans will be.
See here www.cumbriasafetycameras.org for other information.

Angry

Re: http://cumbriasafetycameras.org et al...

So pretty much the whole of the M6 going past the Lake District is one massive accident blackspot, what with all those schools and blind junctions, cyclists and animals

Maybe they should close the whole motorway - that should stop all accidents.

That entire site stinks of people who haven't got a clue how to improve road safety For example, page http://cumbriasafetycameras.org/tips.php has the following useful tips (highlights by me)

---
As a passenger, you can ask the driver to slow down.
Be an ambassador for driving within the legal speed limits - if you comply the chances are that the driver behind you will too.
Be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, children, animals and motorcyclists.
Check your speedometer as frequently as you would your mirrors - it could save your licence.
Choose the right gear to maintain control of your speed.
Do not be pressured by tailgaters to speed.
Do not exceed legal speed limits - they are there for a reason.
Read the Highway Code to find out more about speed limits.
Remember that speed limits are a maximum not a target - often it is more appropriate to drive well within them.
Set realistic journey times.
---

...so, apart from actually being aware of other roads users (don't forget, this is a tip and not a rule), and setting realistic journey times (which is, er, speed related) - the only thing that matters is SPEED :total-dispair:

And they will wonder why casualties will not decrease

OH FFS!!!!! I have just read a little more on that ridiculous web site

They provide statistics on road deaths (plus SIs and others), these being...
2000 - 56 deaths
2001 - 49 deaths
2002 - 48 deaths
2003 - 21 deaths
...the cameras having being implemented in April of 2003!

BUT the number of deaths is ONLY SINCE April (April=5, May=9, June=7), so in THREE months they have had 21 deaths, which times four means OVER EIGHTY DEATHS PER YEAR!!!!

The morons are already making things worse with these bloody Scamera vans

Words fail me!

Cool

I've generally found that everyone gets behind the whole slow down for the cameras thing, maybe because I drive a van all day and the HGV's flash the lights to warn me. I am sceptical that the scheme will reduce road accidents. I have seen many people on sight of the camera van hammer on their brakes almost causing a multiple pile up behind them. Can this be a good thing?

On a brighter note though I guess I'll have to keep checking that schedule of the locations it'll take some of the guess work out of where they'll be.

It seems that they feel the need to have a prescence on the A686 every sunday just in case any one feels like a nice run out in the car!!! Me and a few of my friends were thinking of going for a run to Hartside one day in the scooby and my mates skyline. We'll have to pick a day that they ain't gonna be there!

Anyway it's sunny and I'm off to play in the scooby.

Cheers
Dave.

Don't worry Boomer. These sites are mainly all on "commuter routes". There are plenty of other good driving roads. Keep an eye out if you fancy a journey up. I'm planning a little "excursion" for a few weeks time.
