>Well, I have bought a MX-5 for the summer evenings and I have to say - although its a hairdressers car - the girls LOVE it!!
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Get a real mans drivers car like an MGB V8, thats a lot more hairy ar$ed than a girls blouse MX5. Is your name Quentin by any chance? Are you a closet gay? lol

So Pete has gone from an XR3i cab to an MX5, a step in the right direction, bet it is in Blush Pink with a Grey leather interior sitting on gold wheels and just looks peachy!
At Pete's age an MGB v8 would be a bit of a chore what with the continual greasing of the ball joints (the cars, not his), suspension bits and topping up the dash pots, etc. his poor old back might give him some gyp with the hours spent bent over an open engine bay waiting for the RAC to recover his pride and joy.
Better the MX5 so he can guarantee getting home on time so he can listen to The Archers whilst draining and sterilising is colostomy bag.![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

Crap in rallies? I thought Solberg just won the last WRC round? Can't recall him driving an MX-5? ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
(And yes, I know you're trying to wind us all up...

Bluto - we all know you love traction engines and stuff, BUT the old british cars like Stag, MGB, Spitfires were **** in the 70's and are only for the mentally challenged now - they hold NO appeal whatsoever for me!!
I wanted the feeling that a sports car from the 60's gave BUT wanted it to start, run properly and NOT break-down ..... only ONE choice really, the MX-5 ... best selling sports car the world has ever seen!!
Pete

British "sports cars" such as the MGB, or Morgan, or maybe the Austin Healey may have broken down from time to time etc. But they had one thing above and beyond the MX-5, and quite coincidentally (of course) you, they had character, and charm.
To quote a quintessentially British film in relation to your ownership of an MX-5, seeing as you like the British influence...
Withnail and I:
"I called him a ponce, and now I'm calling you one, PONCE!"

Sorry guy's speaking as a 41 year old letch, I am quite happy with the amount of looks and interest my Scooby gets from rasmaloi and poontang from 16 - 60.
Usually the top end of the scale in age mind you, they look and think " Subaru owner, must be earning, I'll latch on to him "![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

OMG
I'm going to agree with pslewis here...
Have you checked out how much they don't cost in the real world? (as opposed to here, where some seem to be living in a world of their own....
Erm, no, but comparing a scoob to a ferrari? Pushing it a bit don't you think? One's a desireable peice of exotica.......
Ok, I was with you for most of that.. but I'm not so sure about "drive better than.." Given, it's pretty fair, but a bit of a one trick pony... lots of poke, quite a lot of grip, and, erm? Handling decidedly mediocre, interior? ouch... (Ok, so I've not looked at an MY03)
Bottom line, I loved mine for a few reasons, but it didn't last. Wouldn't have another unless as part of a fantasy garage of a bout 10 cars! There's more to life..
Oh, and a mate has an MX-5 (along with a sportsbike...), the mazda *does* get the looks![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
- Mark.
![Confused](images/smilies/confused.gif)
Most blokes who consider you to be a to$$er because you have a Scooby are jealous because they can't afford one
No doubt Ferrari owners get the same thing too. But really, would you care if you had a Ferrari??!!
the only real reason that we look at our cars and sigh with appreciation is because they drive better than almost everyone elses cars, thus making the vehicle more attractive in our eyes.

Pete does make some valid points. But the Max Power thing can apply to almost any car. I've seen some god-awful big spoilers for a Jag X Type which looked utterly appaling. BMW ain't immune either. The cruddy spoiler they put on the 330 Coupe (sport special edition??) is just plain naff.
I have to say that my faith in the Scoob had begun to wane a little. I'm looking to replace mine soon and I had decided to go for something different. However, a weekend spent in a new STI 8 has made me change my mind again. Not since the P1 has a car impressed me that much. Looks are a personal thing, but I like it.
There is still something about the Scoob. It has more charisma then most other cars and I still don't see many about. I like that fact that they are a bit different (still). Subtle they ain't, but if I was that worried about being anonymous, I would go out and buy something less obvious.

My girlfriend (Sh*t! Wife! got married last month!) loves my Sti5 becuase.......
Girls don't look at it, but it DOES attract a large amount of "how much did it cost?" and "how fast does it go?" questions from young lads - meanwhile, their cute 17 year old girlfriends'll be picking their nails and pointedly ignoring it.
Not that i care obviously, now i'm a married man...
I AM seriously considering toning it down a bit. Smaller boot spoiler, loose the dump valve and Super Dragger exhaust, and go back to 17's.
Am i growing up?

Yes you are Russ - stop it now! ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Just been out in my mates STI8 (again
) - 18" wheels, straight through exhaust with TSL firestorm BB, HKS dump valve - pops and bangs just like the old classic Scoobs used to! Fantastic car - beautiful balance and handling - much better than my MY01 WRX - accelerates like a P1 (hell - I think better than a P1) and I heard him coming half a mile away LOL ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Put a big smile on my face - any car that does that is OK by me.
Enjoy your car and sod what other people think.

I think a lot of it is to do with the fact that used to be a very "aspirational" car, in the fact that people lusted after them and wanted them. Now every boy racer living at home with a sh&ty Novaaaa could borrow 5K from the bank, over 6 years or whatever (ie repayment is peanuts) and f*ck the insurance, it'll get paid somehow.
For example out in broughton shopping complex on sat I saw a nice looking R plated 4 WD turbo for sale @ approx 4.5K.
I would like a scoob, I admit it but with things like mortages and SOs to pay for, I cant afford it just at the mo.
However when I do get straight (v soon I hope) I may consider a newer STI or similar or an EVO 5/6.
Not wanting to start a flame war but you'll find that few "Max *****" would be able to afford a) the car or b) the money requred to keep it on the road as we all know how horrendous the servicing on these babies can be, not to mention insurance.
So it becomes less aspirational, after all who would want a car soon to be driven by idiots who have lots of go under the right foot but not 1 cell between their ears and have no experience of extremely powerful cars, trying to race everyone and everything with their sad retarded mates in the car egging them on and shouting obcenities when they loose or forcing people to veer off the road and brake to avoid *THEM* having an RTA at 60 - 70 MPH on a semi residental road (happened to me last week, if I didn't break although I had right of way they would have smashed head on into a box on wheels (a.k.a people carriers)

Now I'm really upset. PSLewis reccommending a wagon? I'll need to sell mine now![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
My wife drives a Z3 and when I borrow it the girls at work (who don't even look at the scoob- its just an estate) letch over the Z3. Note I said the Z3 - not me.
I used to fell well cool until I came out of the shops the other day to find 2 guys chatting up the wife in the Z3 as she was waiting for me. Gits.
Oh and she hardly ever lets me drive the thing as she loves it![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Still my psycho dog & me are happy in the wagon![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
